berei vir verdere studie in dié velde.“Ek sal graag eendagwil sê dat die persoon

wat oor 20 jaar ’n kuur vir vigs uitgevind hetof nuwe energiebronne in Afrika ontwikkelhet, hier skool gegaan het,” sê sy ernstig.Diemoderne dubbelmedium-skool sal ein-

de September voltooi wees – gereed vir dieeerste innames van graad 8’s en 9’s in 2015.Die skool, wat sal fokus op wiskunde- en

Durbanville police are warning residentsabout a couple pretending to be stuck along-side the road without petrol, but are actuallydefrauding people of their money.According to Lt Marchell Rhode, spokes-

person of the Durbanville police, they re-ceived a call from a concerned resident aboutan incident on Klein Roosboom Road outsideDurbanville.“They stop vehicles on the road to ask the

drivers for petrol money as they pretend tobewithout petrol,” Rhode says.“But once peo-ple give them money, they drive away.”A couple were brought in for questioning

but no arrests have been made, due to therebeing no criminal charge yet.In some instances, a woman is sitting alone

in the vehicle, while a man lies on the backseat of the car, says Col Marius Swanepoel ofthe Durbanville police. “They try to get thesympathy of other motorists to get them tostop,” he said.According to Swanepoel they sometimes

have small children with them. There is alsomore than one vehicle involved with thescam.

“Tobedeadwouldbebetter thansufferinglike this,” says Anthony Leeraar fromBrackenfell.He is only oneout of the thou-sands of South African pensioners whohave been affected by the Transnet pen-sion debacle.“I would rather strap myself to a rail-

way line and let one of their trains killme,than carry on living out my old days inpoverty. I lost everything and life is notgetting any better,” he told TygerBurgerlast week.Leereer (57) joined Transnet in the

1970s, where he worked as a client centremanager for the next 20 years until hewasmedically boarded in 1997 for dystonia –a neurological disorder which affectsyour ability to move normally.“At this stage I could barely do any

work and was forced to stop working. Iwas however completely dependant onmy pension fund payments, which by thistime was already being affected by the al-leged mismanagement of Transnet pen-sion funds in 1994,” he said.Leeraar was only one of many who lost

almost everything, after about 65 000members had their benefits reduced by45%- earning less than the state’s old-agepension of R1 350/month.

Living below the breadline“At the moment I should be getting

more than R6000 per month but I only getR2900, and after the medical aid deduc-tions I have only about R300 left,” he said.Leereer and other Transnet pensioners

also had to make do with an increase ofonly 2% per year.“I was forced to sell my house and my

car and later my wife also divorced me,”

he said.He currently lives in a room with a

friend and despite of his debilitating ill-ness was forced to take up a small tempo-rary job again.“It is hard for me, but Ihave no choice. I can’t live on R300 permonth and when this job is done, I don’tknow what I’m going todo next.”Leeraar says this is

nothing less than a hu-man rights abuse.“This is our money

and our futures thathave been blatantly sto-len and I know there aremanymoreCapetonianslike me out there.”He says he has spoken

to numerous Transnetpensioners living in are-as such as Kraaifontein,Brackenfell, Parow andGoodwood, who are allliving below the bread-line.

Class action suitMeanwhile, after a long and hard strug-

gle, the Pretoria High Court a month agoallowed the commencement of a class ac-tion proceeding against Transet and twoof its pension funds, Transnet PensionFund and the Transnet Second DefinedBenefit Fund (TSBF), on behalf of 65 000former Transnet employees.The class action is currently being

brought before the Pretoria High Court.Transnetwill have to defend itself againsta R85bn claim- the first of its kind and thebiggest ever class action lawsuit in South-Africa.Although this decision is being ap-

pealed by Transnet, many political par-

ties in the country are rallying for thepensioners.In a recent statement DA Natasha

Michael, shadowminister of public enter-prises, stated that this planned appeal isunacceptable.“These pensioners, most of them be-

tween the ages of 70 and90 years old, have dedi-cated their lives toSouth Africa throughinfrastructure build-ing. Withholding theirpension money is noth-ing short of exploita-tion,” she said.“We cannot allow

these men and womanwho worked all theirlives to improve SouthAfrican infrastructureto be left to starve andsuffer when they can nolonger look after them-selves,” she said.

“Transnet is so determined to draw outthe suffering that these pensioners mustendure. Elderly South Africans who havededicated their lives to the growth of ourcountry must be able to live their retire-ment in dignity.“We cannot allow these men and wom-

The industrious Theri Rossouw fromBrackenfell is one of only 14 finalistscountrywide in this year’s Sanlam/

Business Partners Entrepreneur of theYear competition.

Her company, Therific Naturals wasborne from her need as a mother to find ahealthy cure for her daughter Jessey, whoat the time had been incorrectly diagnosedwith ADHD. Was it a bird, was it a plane or wasit Spiderman that came tum-bling down from the heavens

over Brackenfell last Sunday?The video of the falling object has cau-

sed quite a stir on YouTube, but nobodycan guess what this strange humanoidobject is.

Afterwatching thevideo, some folk we-re compeltely frea-ked out, suspectingparanormal activity,whereas others wro-te it off as a clevermarketing stunt.

Noulen Basson re-corded the video andis also known for hisdocumentary filmabout the northernsuburbs.

He swears that this was no cleverstunt.

“I was relaxing at home whenmy girl-friend Marileze Wolmarans, noticed ablack spot very high up in the sky at ap-proximately 18:40 last Sunday.

“I ran and set upmyCanon 1100Dwitha Sigma 70-300mm lens and zoomed in tothemaximum. It has a digital zoom func-tion which gives you twice the zoom butit doesn’t allow you to record in that mo-de, so I recorded the image on the view-finder with a Canon 650D,” Noulen ex-plains.

“At first it seemed like a lifeless bodydangling upside down, then it seemed toturn around or crouch into a ball-likeshape and it was then that we saw the

Spiderman-like stance; like it was hol-ding onto its legs. We observed it untilit was too dark to see anymore,” he says.

Noulen says the objectmovedat a veryhigh speed towards the right side of thesky towards Cape Town looking like itwas falling to the right.

Noulen believes it could have havebeen a life-size Spiderman balloon andTygerBurger has to break the news gent-ly to all those die hard UFO-believers

that this is, in all proba-bilities, the case.

The SpiderAirwalkerlife-sized helium bal-loon is not commonlysold in South Africa,but TygerBurger trac-ked down a shop in Ca-pe Town which doesstock it.

It appears very simi-lar to the object in thevideo – that of Spider-man in a crouching po-

sition.Astronomer Dr Nicola Loaring from

the South African Astronomical Outre-ach in Cape Town, added to our suspici-ons with her input.

“Just looking at the video it, it couldwell be the Spiderman balloon. Helium-filled balloons can certainly fly veryhigh and if it’s windy theywill travel ve-ry fast with the wind,” she said.

In her opinion the objectwas certainlynot a falling weather balloon, but couldalso have been an elongated parachute.

Seems like the jury is still out and Ty-gerBurger would like to hear yourthoughts.

Christian communities in Brackenfell,Kraaifontein and Kuils River are preparingfor a spiritual awakening, pre-empted by aprayermovement aptly referred to as SevenDays on the Wall.For seven days, from 19 to 25 October,

Christians from all these communities arecalled upon to pray around the clock non-stop, taking over from one another on thehour. This global initiative was launchedin South Africa last year for the first time,where some 700 churches, ofwhich 200werefrom the Cape Peninsula, took part.In Stellenbosch, 30 local schools formed

part of the initiative and this year 15churches in Brackenfell will be working to-gether to involve as many schools possiblein the Oostenberg area.The initiative is co-ordinated by the

Brackenfell-based Christian organisation,Jesus-in-Action. “Firstly we need to unifycommunities and churches of all denomina-tions and break down all barriers, afterwhich we can share the love of Christ withwith all of humanity,” says Ettiene Pio ofJesus in Action.Pio expects the prayer initiative to be the

awakening. “As a result of only 1000 peoplepraying day and night for seven days, thelives of hundreds of thousands more will betouched by God. Die Wes-Kaapse polisie het Donderdag dienaam bekend gemaak van die vrou wat op16 Augustus dood aangetref is op ’n middel-man in Brackenfell.

Marli Burger (26) se liggaam is laatmid-dag op die middelman in Frans Conradie-rylaan oorkant Paradyspark aangetref. Sywas glo woonagtig naby die plek waar haarliggaam gevind is.

Daar is aanvanklik ’n moorddossier ge-open, maar kapt. F.C. van Wyk van die pro-vinsiale polisie se mediakantoor, het Don-derdag bevestig dat die moorddossier ver-ander is na ’n geregtelike doodsondersoek,

maar wou egter nog nie die redes hiervoorbekend maak nie.

’n Bron het verlede week reeds aanTyger-Burger bekend gemaak dat Burger glo de-pressief was en dat haar familie selfdoodvermoed het.

Die Brackenfell-polisie kon dit egter nognie bevestig nie en het op die amptelike ver-slag van die nadoodse ondersoek gewag.

“Die verslag sal aandui wat presies tothaar dood gelei het,” sê Van Wyk.

Daar was na bewering twee wonde aanBurger se nek wat eers soos steekwonde ge-lyk het, maar ’n betroubare bron het latergesê dat die wonde eerder snywonde was.

Die polisie kon dit nog nie bevestig nie,en die ondersoek duur voort.

National Book Week ends on 7 September sountil then library patrons have the opportu-nity to return overdue material to City li-braries without having to pay their outstand-ing fines. A joint initiative between the De-partment of Arts and Culture and the SouthAfrican Book Development Council, theweek aims to promote and embrace the valueof reading.

An intrusive new type of weed, knownas a wild sunflower, has been spottedBrackenfell, Kraaifontein, Bellville,

Kuils River and surrounds.Reports from observant members of the

public have helped the City of Cape Townto act fast to prevent the spread of the inva-sive wild sunflower (Verbesina encelioides).

“The largest population has been foundin Atlantis, where a recent wildfire has leftthe site disturbed, allowing the wild sun-flower to establish in thearea. If left unman-aged, this plant has the potential to takeover this site and suppress the fynbos fromrecovering after the fire,” says Johan vander Merwe, City mayco member for envi-ronmental planning.

“The flower heads and seeds have beenremoved and incinerated at all the identi-fied sites to prevent the wild sunflowerfrom spreading any further. Plants havebeen removed and all sites will be moni-tored to ensure that the control methodshave been effective,” he said.

According to Van der Merwe, the wildsunflower was first spotted in the Bothasigand Hazendal areas by members of the Cus-

todians for Rare and Endangered Wildflow-ers (Crew).

Crew reported this to the City’s Early De-tection, Rapid Response (EDRR) team,which enabled the City to remove theseplants before they produced seed after theirflowering cycle, which is underway.

“This is the first time that the wild sun-flower has been recorded in the WesternCape,” he said.

It is considered an intrusive invader be-cause it spreads over fertile land and pre-vents the development of any other localplant species.

Van der Merwe says the plant is an annu-al herb originating from North America.

“It was until recently known to be foundin theNorthernCape, Limpopo,NorthWestand Mpumalanga. The wild sunflower in-vades roadsides, cultivated and uncultivat-ed land, disturbed sites and sandy water-courses. A warning is being issued for home-owners to beware of companies offer-ing free energyassessments onbehalf

of Eskom.According to a statement, this warning

comes on the back of reports that a supplierof solar water heaters has been posing asan Eskom agent conducting energy assess-ments for homeowners.The so-called agent’s method is to target

pensioners by telephone. People who agreeto a consultation and allow the company’ssales representatives into their homes areallegedly treated aggressively, and given abogus evaluation of their household’s ener-gy usage. The home’s geyser consumptionis usually highlighted as the critical causeof high-energy consumption, and peopleare subsequently coerced into buying a so-lar water heater from the company.

Ticket sales for the inaugural CapeTown Fringe Festival have opened.

Produced by the Grahamstown Na-tional Arts Festival (NAF) team and sup-ported by the City of Cape Town and Stand-ard Bank, performances will take place inspecially devised theatre spaces includingthe iconic City Hall.

A total of 89 productions have been con-firmed as the core of the Fringe’s pro-gramme. The selected shows represent ablend of work that is “old and new, tried,tested, opportunistic, comfortable, famil-iar, edgy and daring,” according to NAF ar-tistic director Ismail Mahomed.

Focus on theatreMahomed says that the festival organis-

ers have selected a few more productionsthan they initially intended to. As theywere looking through the proposals, theyimmediately began mentally assigningthem to thevenues, thereby finding innova-tive ways to accommodate more shows.“Roughly half the productions selected aretheatre, while the rest are fairly evenlyspread across music, physical theatre, per-formance art, and comedy,” he says.

From the outset, organisers had beenanxious to ensure that the Cape TownFringe gets established as a predominantlya theatre-orientated festival.

He points out that there are already sev-eral long-standing, successful single genrefestivals in Cape Town that cover comedyand jazz for example, and organisers werewary of replicating them.

Among the productions to be staged area numberwhich recently drewaccolades inGrahamstown and which will be presentedin Cape Town for the first time, togetherwith some brand new work which will bepremiering at the new Fringe Festival.

The idea was to present productionswhich audiences are comfortable with,alongside some thatwould get tongueswag-ging.

Plethora of productionsForemost among those expected to raise

some eyebrows is rising star Gavin Kras-tin, whose groundbreaking piece #omnom-nom defies categorisation and takes audi-ences to new levels of discomfort. Therewill also be a number of productions – suchas Ameera Patel’s award-winning WhistleStop, Rob Murray’s Crazy in Love and Jem-ma Kahn in Amateur Hour! – which haveblown audiences away at other festivalsand form part of the Cape Town lineup.

Baking business rises to the occasion

Everymorning at theDurbanville taxi rank,the smell of freshly baked products waftsthrough the air.

Elizabeth Makhalinyani prepares a batchof dough before crawling into bed late atnight every day. She rises at 04:00 – in timeto bake her bread and muffins, which shesells at the taxi rank every day from 08:00to 09:30. Then she heads off to her char jobin Durbanville.

Waiting for her customers in the cold win-termonths,ElizabethMakhalinyani sings toherself and shares a kind word with thosewho seem lonely or sad. Her vibrant, colour-ful way of doing business has attracted theattention of the staff of the Fisantekraal Cen-tre for Development (FCD). So they invitedher to attend a Bake for Profit course to in-crease the profitability of he business.

Elizabeth is now earning such a good in-come from baking, that she aims to resignfrom her char job and focus on her baking.She also hopes to employ more people to ex-tend her business fromKhayelitsha throughto Durbanville.

Elizabeth was abandoned as a baby andgrew up with foster parents who used her asa nanny for their children from the age ofeight. She remembers going to school with-

outuniformor shoes, and thenhaving to car-ry a baby around on her back in the after-noons.She later ended up in an abusivemar-riage to an alcoholic, but managed to leavehim before it was too late.

This hardship taught her to not allowdiffi-culties and obstacles to get her down. She be-lieves that God has given her two hands tomake money to support her family.

Elizabeth says that attending the coursehas given her new confidence in her abili-ties. She now understands why it is impor-tant to correctly cost and mark up her prod-ucts.She is so passionate about what she haslearnt through the course at the FCD, that

she has sponsored her niece, Nandipha, andencouraged her sister-in-law, Khanyisa Siy-engo, to participate in the course as well.

The FCD is anNPOworking in the greaterDurbanville area.The centre offers a threeweek basic computer course (afternoons on-ly) which gives an introduction to workingon a PC and using the internet and email ata cost of R150.

With a new album and a new name,The Ballistics have had a very busyyear.

When TygerBurger last spoke to theNorthern suburbs band, they had just re-leased their debut EP and were playing un-der the name Ballistic Blues.Last year the band were joint winners of

the Rolling Stone Rockstarter competition(sharing the title with Cortina Whiplash)which kicked open the doors to the SouthAf-rican music industry.Thanks to their involvement in the compe-

tition, they got to perform at Oppikoppi,toured Gauteng, were featured in the SouthAfrican edition of Rolling Stone magazineand, most importantly, got the opportunityto record their full-length album at VH Mu-sic and Publishing in Joostenbergvlakte.

Not just the bluesBallistic decided to change their name

slightly in order to steer clear of alienatingpotential new fans who might put them ina box before hearing them.“We started out as a solid blues band and

only played blues-orientated gigs,” explainslead guitarist, Tyan Odendal. But theirsoundhas evolved and the bandhave startedplaying music with other influences to newcrowds who weren’t necessarily into blues.“We’re not just blues anymore,” Tyan says.“We thought we’d broaden our horizons,”

adds bassist JP le Roux.Frontman, Nick Forbes, says the new al-

bum is a collection of their best work overthe past few years.

When it all comes togetherWhile their roots are still in blues, Nick

says Calling for the Crazy has elements ofpop and jazz, before hastily adding: “I thinkit’s full-on rock actually.”The band did some pre-production for the

albumwith Basson Laubscher before spend-ing 10 days in the VH studio recording thealbum.JP points out that you’d have to go to a

show or experience their music for yourselfto pinpoint their sound.“We are four different people and we have

different music influences and when it allcomes together it kind of makes somethingnew,” he says.The band are planning a newmusic video,

launching their music on on-line platformsand releasing of a new single over the nextfewmonths, all between touring throughoutSeptember. A coastal tour may be in thepipeline in December.“We want to get our album out to as many

people as possible, in as many places as pos-sible,” Tyan says.In the meantime, Capetonians can go to

their gig at Dizzy’s in Camps Bay on Fridayfrom 21:00. Om te kwalifiseer vir die ti-tel van “meester”, oftewel “shihan”,moet jy ’n minimum van 35 jaar karatebeoefen en vir minstens 5 jaar ’n Godan(5de Dan) wees. “Vir my is dit ’n beson-derse eer om saam met die bestes (mees-ters) in die wêreld te oefen.
