WesternCapePoliceCommissionerLtGen Arno Lamoer has accepted achallenge to ride with the local boys

in blue. But will he put his money where hismouth is?

Some 16 policemen – 13 from Brackenfell,and one each from Kraaifontein, Bellvilleand Khayalitsha police stations – completeda seven day, 605 km cycle tour last monthto raise funds for the South African PoliceService National Education Trust.

This was the second consecutive cycletour in aid of the trust, with planning for thethird in 2014, already in progress.

The trust was established in October 2011on the initiative of the minister of police,Nathi Mthethwa and the former nationalcommissioner General Bheki Cele, with thepurpose to provide financial assistance tothe children of members who die in the lineof duty.

Line of DutyAt the time the trust was established al-

most 200 policemen had died in the line ofduty countrywide over the preceding 20months.

On Friday evening Brigadier Gerda VanNiekerk, acting cluster commander ofKraaifontein, Brackenfell and Durbanvillepolice cluster handed over a cheque of R56120 to Lamoer, who was recently nominatedto the board of the trust.

Challenged by Brackenfell station com-mander Col Willie Joseph to join the tour in2014, Lamoer accepted saying that he wouldalso pass the challenge on to the other 140police stations in the province.

Speaking at the event that took place atMeerdam on the Bottelary Road, he thankedcyclists for their inititiative and confirmedthat the Western Cape Provincial Police isthe highest contributor to this fund to date.

“We have donated R200 000 so far, with theother provincial police departments in thecountry not having contributed a cent asyet,” he said.

He furthermore said that he will makesure that the children of fallen policemen inthe Western Cape – of which there are cur-rently nine – will benefit from this fund inorder to complete school and tertiary educa-

tion.Joseph lauded the men for their commit-

ment in bettering their efforts of last yearby more than R10 000.

One of the cyclists, Bouwer Schoonwin-

kel, residing in Brackenfell and stationed atthe Khayelitsha police station, said thisyear’s tour was tougher than last year’s, al-though the cyclists were physically betterprepared.

“The stretch between Villiersdorp andBredasdorp was like doing five Argus racesin one day – but all worth it. We were wel-comed with open hearts by townspeoplealong the entire route,” he said.

Anger-fueled riots erupted in Wal-lacedene on Monday morning, re-sulting in widespread damage tocompleted houses in Phase I of thehousing project.Some 22 houseswere stormed and

pelted with stones by about 500 resi-dents of the Temporary RelocationArea (TRA).Tyres were burnt in the streets

and trees pulled out, while angryresidents threatened to burn downthe houses if the current occupantsdid not vacate them.These occupants were later as-

sisted by police and some city offi-cials to vacate the houses with theirpossessions.While the Kraaifontein police

were on the scene, the Tactical Re-sponse Team (TRT) was called in todisperse the crowdswith smoke gre-nades. By late afternoon, police andthe TRT were still on the scene.According to severalTygerBurger

sources, these residents were en-raged about the houses in Phase 1being allocated to people who theyallege were not eligible for housing.Many of the residents in the TRA

have lived here for longer than adecade awaiting a house.According to Bergdal Subcouncil

Chairman Grant Twigg, the occu-pants in these houses come from ar-eas outside Kraaifontein, such asKhayelitsha.According to several residentsTy-

gerBurger spoke to, many occu-pants hail from the Eastern Cape.“We have launched an investiga-

tion at the housing office to deter-mine the state of affairs,” he said.The housing crisis in Wal-

lacedene was discussed at the sub-council meeting in January thisyear, afterwhichTwigg urged an in-depth investigation of the matter ina letter to Mayor Patricia de Lille.Twigg raised important issues,

such as whether there would beenough land available to house peo-ple who currently still live on theTRA and the progress of certain cor-ruption charges levelled againstcontractors in the past.Some 1 200 people currently live

in the TRA while awaiting housing.At the time, the office of themayor

stated that the investigation wouldbe conducted on both local and pro-vincial levels.To date the subcouncil has not re-

ceived feedback fromthemayor’s of-fice, but last month requested theportfolio committee to oversee theproject henceforth.

pet owners, which helps ensure that find-ing a lost pet is more than possible. A mi-crochip is a grain size chip that is painless-ly insertedunder the skinof ananimal andwhen read by a scanner, will provide theowner’s details and contact numbers. It’s

a simple non-invasive procedure thatcould turn your lost pet into a found one.The large number of animals admitted

to the society has placed tremendous pres-sureon their pet food supplies and theyaretherefore in dire need of food to feed thealmost 400 cats and dogs currently in theircare.About 1 100 kg of pet food is consumed

Severe alcohol and drug abuse has left thou-sands of Wallacedene children with a lackof a stable home life and the family valuesthat go with it.This troubling and sad concernwas high-

lighted at a community meeting held atEnkulukweni Primary School last Wednes-day.The meeting was chaired by Dr Anthony

Costandius, a counselling psychologistfrom Durbanville in order to explore thesupport systems currently available inWal-lacedene.According to Costandius, the meeting

stressed the very urgent need for the estab-lishment of a new community forum in thearea.This forum according to Costandius will

have to integrate the social and educationalservices in the community with the needsof the community as expressed by its lead-ers.“In the short term there is the need for

the establishment of a place of safetywithinthe boundaries of the community for theprotection of children who are at risk.”“Later such a facility could also cater for

endangered adults,” he said.According to him a medium to long-term

concern is the fate of handicapped childrenwithin the community, specifically thosethat are profoundly handicapped, needinghigh levels of care.“These children are currently hidden in

the community and it is doubtful that par-ents receive adequate and appropriate sup-port in their efforts to care for such chil-dren,” he said.He said that an investigation needed to be

done into the requirements for establishingsuch a centre.Furthermore, deep concern was ex-

pressed about parents in the communityand their ability to be responsible and effec-tive parents.“Much note was made of a general lack

of family values.”“It seems that many parents in the com-

munity are both illiterate and unemployed.Alcohol and drug abuse is rife... with the re-sult that there aremany parents in the com-munity that do not care well for their chil-dren, to the point where there is both ne-glect and abuse,” he said.“It is clear that the parents of Wal-

lacedeneneed tobemobilised, educatedandmotivated so that they can fulfil theirresponsibilities,” he said.At the next meeting representatives for

the suggested community forum should beelected and role-players are expected to pro-vide feedback on the all the relevant issuesdiscussed.The community forum should then be

able to begin its task.

A flight of the imagination was visible inevery handmade ceramic wine carafeshowcased at a wine and canape eveningatNitidaWineFarmonTuesday evening.As part of a project in ceramics, second

year industrial design students from theCape Peninsula University of Technolo-gy worked closely with Nitida to designa wine carafe for a particular blend ofwine, incorporating the characteristicsof the blend in order to serve it at its best.“They were also requested to pair the

blend with their suggestion of comple-mentary food choices. The students werejudged on the carafe design, quality ofmanufacture, their food pairing and anoverall written presentation of theproject,” says Leozette Roode on behalf ofNitida.

The end product alongwith other table-ware such as cheese plates and foodbowls, displayed a design that was pureand organic, inspired by the protea flow-ers that grow naturally on the farm.Says Bernhard Veller, owner of Nitida

who was closely involved with the stu-dents during the project: “It was fantasticto work with these young people, to expe-rience their enthusiasm and creativity.”As part of the project the students visit-

ed the farm to learn more about its histo-ry, wines and culture to assist them withtheir design concepts.“It was incredible to work with actual

industry clients and to make and presentthese designs, items that have actualmarketing potential,” said student Carla-Bekker-Kleyn.Veller said that the possibility exists

for a commercial endeavour.

tional employment in South Africa sproutsfrom Small Micro and Medium Enterprises(SMME), comparing poorly to our counter-parts in the BRICS partnership.In Brazil 78 % of all employment sprouts

from SMMEs, followed by 79 % in Russia,85 % in India and 90 % in China.Sandrock says that South Africa will have

When intuition, anticipation andconcentration merge, JakeMontandon twirls into the air.

And while suspended in the midair, thechampion freerider uses his jet ski to pulloff the most eye-catching moves imagina-ble.

All too soon he would plummet back tothe unforgiving waves below.

On the Montalivet beach the predomi-nantly French crowd goes wild, but Jakestays focused.

The 29-year-old freerider from TableView wants to be the best in the world, butcoming second isn’t half bad!

Needless to saywhenhe claimed the run-ner-up spot in France this month he re-turned home as a hero.

ThirdJake finished third in the 2012 IFWAFre-

eride World Championship Tour, and if heconsistently performs at this rate, otherswill soon be measured by his high stand-ards.

The World Tour comprises three inter-national rounds a year of which France isthe first. During these rounds competitorscompete in a head-to-head double elimina-tion format, while a panel of judges scoresthem 50 % for their wave surfing and 50 %for their aerial manoeuvres.TygerBurger caught up with jet-setter

Jake to hearmore about his latest achieve-ment and this audacious sport.

“This was the last championship of theguywho came first, so even though I’mcur-

rently second on the log, I will basically begoing into the next competition with themost points,” he explains.

Jake has come a long way since he firststarted freeriding at the age of 12 while heworked for a jet ski rental company.

A fellow competitor once said: “Thesport of jet ski freeride alone is best definedby taking the world’s best surfing contest,theworld’s bestmotocross freestyle tricks,and blending them all together to create anintense and exciting sport.”

VariationsYouTube is full of of clips of people doing

flips, turns and other gravity-defyingtricks. Jake knows all of these and mighteven have come up with a couple himself.

“There are so many different variationsout there. The Madonna flips, one-hand-one-foot, the can cans, the super-flips...And then we are also judged on normalsurfing, such as big slashes off the top ofthe lip and things like that,” says Jake, add-ing his favourite is probably the Madonnaflip.

He had to pay to get this good – eitherin time, sweat or ligament-wellness.

“I’ve been in and out of the doctor’srooms lots of times: ankles, back, shoul-ders, teeth... at least I still haveall of them!”

When he is not at the doctor’s room,you’ll probably find him preparing in thegym or flirting with the waves.

He concludes: “On the waves timing iseverything. One has to improvise, thinkquickly and find the trick that works best.You’re up against Mother Nature, youknow!”

Gambate in Japanese translates to per-severance – something that HenryBosman and Neill Bruce learned all

too well in their three-month tenure in To-kyo. Now, back home in their beloved coun-try, the Bellville boys are reflecting on aonce-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Let me tell you, it was tough. We were un-der no illusion that it would be a walk in thepark, but boy were we in for a surprise.

“We were based at the Honbu dojo whichis the international headquarters for Ky-okushin-kan karate. Our day would startwith the cleaning of the dojo and after thatwe would have intensive training.

On a another note, the Japanese eat ricemorning noon and night and surprisinglynot as many fish as you would think. It’squite expensive over there,” said Henry.

Neill reflects on the many intensive ses-sions they had. “You don’t ever fear that youare in pain. On Tuesdays we had fightingclasses with their u-65kg, u-70kg and u-80kgchampions.”

“Those guys are at another level of tough,sometimes I would take kicks to the leg sothat I can barely stand on it, but somehowyou pull through and only check on your in-juries after the fight.”

“Looking back on it, it made me and Hen-ry so much more tough, not only mentally,but physically as well. We were also in-structed to give some classes to six to 13-year-olds. That was fun and it helped us withour own technique.

“Asyou stand in front of the class teachingthem the various techniques, you have to

constantly check them and yourself to makesure you are doing things correctly.”

BetterSince their return, their balance, under-

standing of this ancient practice and stami-na have improved dramatically.

They have also revised their trainingschedule to keep the intensity high.

“These boys really surprised me. Justlooking at them made me realise that these

are not the same boys that I sent to Japanthree months ago.”

“They are physically, mentally and tech-nically better.”

“I’m excited to see them perform in up-coming tournaments,” said Shihan HennieBosman of the Welgemoed dojo.

Come August, when they will be compet-ing in the Len Barnes Memorial Tourna-ment in Durban, they are sure to be moreprepared for the challenge.

Robben Island’s very own triathlon, the Tri-Rock Robben Island, is back on Saturday 12October and participants are entering fast.

The Tri-Rock offers athletes a unique ex-perience on one of the world’s most famousheritage sites.

Tri-Rock Founder Grant Kunneke expectsthis year’s event to be even better than theinaugural race last year. “Tri-Rock RobbenIsland is not only about honouring the mem-ory of this important piece of our history, itis also about the preservation of the islanditself,” says Kunneke.

The event will include two races – theshorter distance “4:14:4” which will consistof a 400 m swim, 14 km cycle and 4 km run,and the more challenging “8:28:8” which willconsist of an 800 m swim, 28 km cycle and8 km run.

Tri-Rock Robben Island and Robben Is-land Museum are also offering athletes theopportunity to experience the island withaccommodation on the island in one of theprison cells.

Guests will learn more about the prisonthrough a tour with an ex-prisoner and war-den, as well as enjoy dinner and breakfast.
