Charmaine Pereira was once a builderand estate agent who owned two hou-ses in Plattekloof Hills. But life has de-

alt her some serious blows, enough for herto end up with nothing but a borrowed tentto sleep in.“Today I thank God that He gave me the

strength to endure all: emotional pain, bro-kenness, humiliation, bankruptcy. It hasbirthed in me the desire to want to helpothers.“I was married for 16 years and then got

divorced. I married my second husband andopened a pub in the heart of Brooklyn butsold it after he shot himself.She admits she has made some bad decisi-

ons, but she has never touched any substan-ces. The NPO Mitchell’s Mission, a “Safehouse for those who are lost” in Sanddrift,took Charmaine and her third husband inseven years ago, during which Charmainesupported her third husband in his recoveryfrom various addictions and “the wild sideof life”, as she puts it. They stayed there forthree years, first in a tent and then in aWen-dy house.In 2009 Charmaine registered an NPO, Re-

aching out to Others, to help people who aredown and out, to find their feet. “There arejust too many people who end up in squattercamps or on the streets,” she says.Today they stay with their friend, Brenda

Fraught, in her house in Richwood. Theyshare it with 20 other destitute people.Brenda, who also stayed in a room in the

middle of someone’s lounge once, opened upthe bottom half of her two-storey house forhomeless people a year ago. All the spaceshave been divided by curtains and partiti-ons. The beds are tidy and the floors, com-munal bathroom and kitchen are spotless.Although there is hardly space for two peo-

ple to pass in the little corridors between the“rooms”, there is an atmosphere of calm be-nevolence in the house.“I thought Iwould gonutty at first because

I am a little bit of a loner, but I love goingdown there and talking to everybody. Thesepeople are like family.Everybody looksaftereach other, everybody cares for each other.That, to me, is the most beautiful,” saysBrenda. “For people who have nothing, andI literallymean nothing, they are still prepa-red to share. In the beginning this reallybrought tears tomy eyes.My lifewould havebeen empty without them.”

The land has nothing onit except a borehole with water, but nopump.Once her house is sold and the bond is set-tled, all the profits will go to Reaching outto Others, to help fund the Wendy houses,solar panels and a water pump among otherthings.“We can take in people as long as the landis used for farming,” says Lorina Daniels,the small farmer who benefited from a landredistribution case in 2005 and who hasagreed to share her land inMamrewith Rea-ching out to Others.“I am happy for Charmaine and Brendaand I amhappy to be involvedwithmorewo-men who share my vision of farming andcommunity,” she says.“Wewill be staying there as labourers andwe have to farm,” says Charmaine.“I’ve tried farming a few times in my lifebut the timing was not right. The timing isright now. It is different because Imatured,”Brenda says. She stayed on a farm as a childand has dreamt of farming since she was alittle girl.“My family is supporting me. I want to dothis Hillbilly style,” she says. “Once I givethis house up, there is no turning back, wehave to make it. We won’t walk out with ourtails between our legs, we would never,” shesays. “I have no farming experience, but I

have enough passion,” says Charmaine.“You learn as you go along. The soil is goodfor grenadellas and proteas, wewill be doingthat. My son is an excellent welder, he willhelp us make tunnels to plant cucumbersand tomatoes.”Charmaine has already planted 60 avoca-do trees that she cultivated from pips. About18 people from the house are moving to theland and there is a list of those who want tojoin the farm. Charmaine, as CEO of Rea-ching out to Others, is taking charge of theeffort. “Wewon’t, for instance, allow alcoholor other substances. The message is clear:

no substance abuse. I canbevery compassio-nate and understanding, but I can be verystrict also,” she says. The challenge now isto create an infrastructure on the farm. “Ihave the drive and the tenacity and the con-sistency to make it happen.At themoment she is spending all her timesearching for funding and donations. “Thisis not something thatwill happen overnight.It is like building up a little business. Three African elephants may soon beroaming the hills and winelands ofMeerendal wine estate outside Dur-

banville, depending on approval from Ca-peNature.

However, they will be in the full-timecontrol of trained elephant handlers in de-signated areas.

Imagine sipping wine on the restaurantstoep while the Big Feet walk past or en-joying the view of the farm dam while thegroup enjoys a mud bath.

It was not only this perfect marketingpicture, but more so the love for Africananimals of Herman Coertze, owner of Mee-rendal, that gave birth to the project in Ju-ne last year.

Coertze also owns a game farm near Be-la-Bela in theLimpopoprovince,where theelephants will come from the nearby Vaal-dam farm.

ApprovalMeerendal is awaiting final approval

from CapeNature for a permit to transloca-te these elephants and keep them at Mee-rendal in compliance with the relevant re-gulations and land-use policy.

The Meerendal elephants will be leasedfrom the organisation, Elephants for Afri-ca Forever (EFAF), which was started in2005 by the world-recognised elephantwhisperer, Rory Hensman, who passedaway in March last year.

According to Deon Adriaanse, coordina-tor of the Meerendal project, the three ele-phants were tamed by Hensman himself.They were rescued when they were identi-fied to be culled in the Kruger NationalPark.

The elephants, all male, are the 21-year-old Tembo, Chishuru and Moya, respecti-vely 11 and 10 years old.

EFAF will provide long-term supervisionover the elephant programme while provi-ding their qualified and trained handlers tobe in charge of the elephants on a full-timebasis.

The organisation will also be responsiblefor the translocation of the elephants fromBela-Bela to Meerendal.

Estate programme is a key project of theBigfeet Elephant Foundation, which hasbeen established by Meerendal as a charityorganisation to help promote the interestsof elephants in South Africa.

Up to October 2013 an amount of morethanR100 000 has been raised for theBigfeetElephant Foundation.

Thiswasmostly achievedwith the launchof a unique new wine project entitled “BIG-FEET – Pressed by Elephants”.

The three Meerendal elephants were partof a group of six elephants that were usedin an advertisement to trample on the vinesto “press the grapes” to make a Meerendalwine.

The wine was shipped internationallyand was an instant hit. Meerendal offeredto give R1 from every bottle of its “Big FeetWine” sold, to the Big Feet Foundation.

Elephants at Meerendal is not a far-fet-ched idea, said Adriaanse. Elephants in thevicinity dates back to 1608 when John Jour-dain went ashore at Rietvlei (near Milner-ton) and travelled up the river towards theTygerberg Hills.

He wrote that he saw estreges (dung) andfootings (spoor) of elephant.

The farm Meerendal was granted to JanMeerland by Governor Willem Adriaan vander Stel in 1702.

Olifantskop, which is located betweenDurbanville and Philadelphia, was namedafter the elephant that occurred there up tothe early 1700s.

A existing unused cellar on Meerendalwill be utilised as an elephant informationcentre. This centre will accommodate dis-plays of all aspects of the elephants, theirecology, human-elephant interactions, andbiodiversity conservation.V Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to view the winemaking video.

Understand the grieving process

Claire, 31, is a drug addict. She is alsoa rape victim and a mother, who hastried many times to shrug the habit

that cost her custodyof her six-year-old son.She earns a living begging, and by telling

her story she hopes to reach other addictsand generate someunderstanding about ad-diction and the destructive power of drugs.

“Literally my whole life revolves aroundgetting and using of drugs – everything elsecomes second. Without drugs I can’t functi-on, so in order to do anything else I firstneed to have the drugs. Every single day isspent frantically trying to just survive,” shesays.

“I usuallywake up startingwithwithdra-wal symptoms and have to make a planquickly before it gets too late, so I start wal-king in the direction of Bellville, asking pe-ople I meet along the way if they can pleasehelp with taxi fare, or something like that.

“I don’t get high from using anymore, it’sjust to stay ‘not sick’. Once I’ve hadmy firstshot (heroin is her drug of choice) for theday I can then start to really make moneyandwill go to different areas every daywithdifferent stories to make money,” she says.

ProgressedShe’s tried most drugs, Claire says.“I started with dagga and alcohol in high

school and soon progressed to doing speedand sometimesmandrax. Later inmy teensI did the whole party scene and regularlyused ecstasy and cocaine, then ephedrineand occasionally hallucinogenic drugs.

“At the age of 18 I first used heroin withmy boyfriend at the time – who is now deadas a result of an overdose – and have beenstruggling to stop ever since. I was also ad-dicted to crack in my early twenties. At themoment I am injecting heroin and using tikon a daily basis.”

Claire says it’s very easy to get drugs inBellville. “It is ridiculously easy to getdrugs – the dealers will actually approachyou if they think you’re looking for drugs.It’s also relatively cheap – at R35 for a quar-ter gram of heroin, or a bag of tik.

“I think the police don’t have the resour-ces or themanpower to effectively dealwithall the drug dealers in Bellville.

“They also don’t have enough of the cor-rect information to catch the right people

to make a difference, because if you catchthe small-time dealers, more will pop upthan there was to begin with.”

Tough loveHermomdied 11 years ago and her father

remarried. He recently gave up trying tohelp her. “Last July they finally kicked meout for good andwouldn’t takeme back andsent my son to live with his father. I thinkit hurts my family too much to see me likethis and they feel helpless to fix it so theyprefer to stay away from me.”

Claire says she has no friends left. “I used(drugs) with my friends from school butthey’re all clean now, except the ones whodied. I have lost twoboyfriends to drugs andcountless friends as well as acquaintancesover the years.”

During February this year while on ahigh she ended up in Delft where she wasraped, but can’t recall details of her assai-lants. She now regularly frequents the Bell-ville Police Station, but for solace, or “whenI’m having a particularly hard time”.

Claire says a lack of self-esteem and a badrelationship with her parents drove her todrugs. “Different people deal with adversesituations in different ways and I unfortu-nately ended up using drugs.”

She describes using drugs as “someonetelling me everything is going to be okay”.

But the withdrawal symptoms are “abso-lute agony”. Using means feeling normal,she says.

It broke her heart to lose her son.“Yes, I was high at the time, that’s why

he was taken away, because I was using. Itbreaks my heart every day that I can’t bewith him all the time and be there for himevery day after school and to put him to bedevery night, especially because he’s goingthrough such a hard time and doesn’t un-derstand why he can’t be with me.”

Claire has spent a total of almost five ye-ars – intermittently over the last 12 years– in rehab.“I have to believe I can rehabili-tate – if I knew that for the rest of my lifeI would be enslaved by heroin I honestlythink Iwouldkillmyself right now, becausethere would be no point in carrying on likethis with no hope of recovery.”

Clairehas a simplewish: “Tohavea chan-ce at a new life in a small town away fromcities and drugs, where there is a job thatI could do that would sustain me and myson”.

Members of the South African police areequipping themselves with how to speakMandarin in order to better assist the Chine-se nationals now living in South Africa.

A three-month course, funded by the go-verment of the People’s Republic of China,is offered by the Confucius Institute at UCTand hosted at the Grand Cape China in Mil-nerton.

WO Annacletta Mothoalo, spokespersonfor the Kleinvlei police who is attending thecourse, said the purpose of the programmeis to teach officers basic Mandarin in orderto communicate better with Chinese natio-nals in Cape Town.

She said the course was also presented inJohannesburg.

According to her the police do not receivea lot of cases from members of the Chinesecommunity in areas such as Eerste River.

“But if you go to an area like Milnertonor the airport there will be more cases to bedealt with,” Mothoalo said.

“The motivation for the language courseis due to the fact that there are a lot of Chine-se businesses in South Africa.

“What they discovered is that when theyopen a case at the police station it is difficultfor them to communicate with the police,”Mothoalo said.

She said the Chinese nationals requestedtheir government’s help in this regard.

“The Chinese government said they arewilling to pay and to teach the police officerstogether with traffic officers and law enfor-

cement how to speak Mandarin.“The course is very interesting, but it is

also difficult.“You are supposed to learn the tones, and

for each tone there is a character.“The characters are very difficult because

of their designs, but they showed us how todo it.

“At the beginning it was difficult but if youapply yourself it becomes a bit easier,” Mo-thoalo explained.

She said an oral test is planned for laterthis month.

“The women will then be wearing traditio-nal Chinese dresses and do spiritual dan-cing.

“After that there is going to be a sessionwhere we have to introduce ourselves in

Chinese.”According to Mothoalo they will be met by

a panel of Chinese delegates.“It’s an interesting thing really. You must

work hard, I really enjoy it and I am pas-sing.”

The course runs from January untilMarch.According to Mothoalo several policeofficers are taking the course.“Some are sec-tor commanders, some are communicationofficers.”

Mothoalo said the top three students willbe travelling to China for further trainingfor two months.

“That is why I am fighting. I want to goto Beijing, China,” she smiled.

Urban ‘farming’ sets a new trend

An innovative form of hydroponic urbancrop farming in Northpine has both the Cityof Cape Town, the Western Cape provincialgovernment and two other South Africanprovinces keyedup to get on the bandwagon.

In his backyard in Northpine, engineerVernon Pretorius is currently growing 800tomato plants on a piece of land no biggerthan 63 m², yielding enough tomatoes to sus-tain a financially viable small farming busi-ness.

Whatmakes this crop unique is the hydro-ponic technique used. It’s called NutrientFilmTechnique (NFT), whereby a very shal-low streamofwater containing all the dissol-ved nutrients required for plant growth isre-circulated (into an underground watertank) past the bare roots of the plants in awatertight gully or channel.

The depth of the circulating water is veryshallow, which ensures that the thick moistrootmat,whichdevelops in thebottomof thechannel, is exposed to the air, resulting inan abundant supply of oxygen.

Says Pretorius: “The result of this unique

combination of water, oxygen and nutrientsis a much higher, faster growing yield ofhigh quality produce, making it very pro-ductive. It yields double the produce thanconventional hydroponicmethods and ensu-res an all-year round production, by heatingor chilling the water in which the cropgrows.”

Pretorius started researching NFT eightyears ago after seeing it at a small farm inOudtshoorn. After intense research he setup the infrastructure and has since grownlettuce, strawberries and tomatoes.

Although the initial infrastructure costhim R90 000, this small scale crop can gene-rate a monthly income of R20 000.

Pretorius now envisions a communityproject in Northpine, creating an urban ve-getable “farm”, to empower the unemployedand impart skills.After approaching the cityand the provincial department of agricultu-re, both parties visited Pretorius’s yard tolook at the initiative before vouching theirsupport.

Even the Eastern Cape provincial depart-ment of agriculture is scheduled for a visitthis week, to launch a pilot project to empo-wer communities in that province.

Subcouncil chairmanGrant Twigg is veryexcited about the prospects of such a project,saying that the possibilities are endless.

“We can empower not only the people ofNorthpine, but roll out the same model tounemployed citizens in Scottsdene for

example.“The value of skills impartment to the

community cannot be overemphasised. Pro-jects like these can even be combined withsocial grants programmes, to generate an in-come for the unemployed,” Twigg said

Milnerton police is requesting the assistanceof the public in tracing two suspects whomight be linked to robbery incidents in theMilnerton central area. The first suspect(identikit) is approxiately 20 years old, tall,slender and has big, strong hands. Thesecond is between 18 and 25 years old, ofaverage length and slender. The 20th Trans-Atlantic, after a humble startin 1995 with six vessels, will take place asfrom 14 to 16 March.

The organisers of the event expect 35 to 40rubber ducks to compete in this year’s ad-venture from the Olifant’s River mouth toMelkbos main beach over a period of threedays and a distance of 430 kilometres.

The teams will depart Strandfontein onFriday 14 March and compete over three sta-ges to Velddrift. Teams will overnight at theBergriver Municipality at the Stywelyne ca-ravan park.

TheSaturday shiftwill take the teams fromStywelyne around Cape Columbine the mostdangerous point along theWest Coast to Lan-gebaan, and the SwiftHumanResources shiftwill end at Yzerfontein main beach.

During the afternoon the teams will racein the surf to determine the king of the wavetitle for the event.

The finalLCCPMstagewill bring the teams

home from Yzerfontein to Melkbos on Sun-day 16 March at approximately 10:30.

The adventure will end with a surf ridingevent at Melkbos at 12:00.

During this adventure theparticipants aimto raise funds for theWest CoastNational SeaRescue Institute (NSRI) stations, that are res-ponsible for the safety of the participants onthe water.

This adventure is also the single biggestNSRI practise in SouthAfricawhen the threemain NSRI stations along the West Coast,Melkbos, Yzerfontein and Saldanha are wor-king as a teamunder thewatchful eyes of Sta-tion 18 commander, Rhine Barnes.

They assure the safety of the teams, especi-ally that of the new members on the water,in all conditions.

Die lede van die Kaapse Kwiltgenot in Dur-banville gaan pragtige handgemaaktekwiltsmaak virma’s van doodgebore babasin plaaslike hospitale.

Maart is nasionale kwiltmaand en op Sa-terdag 15 Maart gaan soveel moontlik vandie sowat 35 vroue wat aan die KaapseKwiltgenot behoort, in die ontspanningsaalvan die Rosehaven-aftreeoord in Durban-ville begin kwilts maak vir dié projek. Die

vroue sal al van 10:00 af aan die laslappiesbegin stik.

Die babakwilts sal geskenk word aanma’s wie se babas doodgebore is.

Volgens Joan Visser, voorsitter van dieKaapse Kwiltgenot, kan die mammas hulbabas daarin toedraai en só begrawe of ookbesluit om die kwilt as ’n aandenking tehou. Aanvanklik word die kwilts net by dieMediclinic Panorama uitgedeel, maar daarword tans onderhandel om die projek uit tebrei na die Mediclinic Durbanville.

Dié “Little Quilts of Love”-projek het syontstaan te danke aan Ronel Pistorius, watvir 10 jaar saam met haar man, dr. LouwPistorius, in Nederland gebly het en daarmet die projek te doene gekry het.

Pistorius het 14 babakwilts van vriendin-ne in Nederland ontvang om haar projekhier in Suid-Afrika te begin. Enigeen kankwilts bydra tot die projek.

Hiervan is altesame vyf babakwilts reedssedert Oktober verlede jaar, toe die projekhier begin is, aan mammas by die Medicli-nic Panorama uitgedeel, het Tersia Bester,kliëntediensbestuurder van die MediclinicPanorama, gesê.

Volgens Chrismari Herholdt, hospitaal-sielkundige wat sulkema’s ondersteunmetberading, is die simboliek agter die kwiltsvir die mammas baie waardevol.

“Dit gee ook erkenning aan hul groot ver-lies en is vir baie van hulle spesiaal om ietsvir hul baba te kry. Hulle kan met die kwiltmaak wat hulle wil,” het sy gesê.

On Saturday 23 February, aftercoming back from town, I foundmy four-month-old kitten in ourgarden, her back legs werelame. I rushed her to BellvilleAnimal Hospital as I thoughtshe had been hit by a car andher back was broken.

X-rays were taken of her back

and back legs, but nothing waswrong. On Monday, the vetagain took x-rays but this timeof the top half of her body.

It was found that she hadbeen shot with a pellet or airgun. Nothing could be done tosave her and she had to be putto sleep at only four monthsold!

What are we as humanscoming to? Pellet and air gunsshould be banned. Parents,please do not buy these danger-ous toys – a pellet gun is not atoy. It manes and kills.

About two weeks agoI had replenished my wood andwent to them and ordered 1 000pieces at R1 per piece – equat-ing to R1 000. It was to bedelivered at my home. In duetime they arrived and deliveredthe ordered wood. After theyleft, I was looking at theamount of wood and it seemedas if I was done in. Whencounting the wood, I discoveredthey delivered only 600 pieces,crooking me of R400. I am sodisappointed, because previous-ly I offered the same guys acold beer for their effort – thiswhile they were cheating meblind!

Dit bring maar net weer die punt harden duidelik tuis: ongeag van wat diewaarheid werklik is, die hof kan enigekant toe beslis.

1.7 Eienaars moet om die korting aansoek doen in die jaar wat ’n nuwe algemenewaardasie of aanvullende waardasie, na gelang van omstandighede, inwerking gestel word. Aansoeke met die inwerkingstelling van ’n nuwealgemene waardasie moet die Stad bereik teen 31 Augustus van dieboekjaar waarin die waardasie in werking gestel sal word. Aansoeke met dieinwerkingstelling van ’n aanvullende waardasie moet die Stad bereik teendie laaste dag van die derde maand na die inwerkingstellingsdatum vandie waardasie. Indien nie, kan geen sodanige korting vir daardie boekjaretoegestaan word nie.

2. VERBRUIKSTARIEWE EN -HEFFINGSBTW teen 14% word by die volgende dienste bygevoeg: water, sanitasie, elektrisiteiten vaste-afvalbestuur.

2.1 WATER

Drie stelle watertariewe word voorgestel (10%-verminderingstarief, 20%-

verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppel aan die vlakvan watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die 10%-verminderingstariefas norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, sal dít die tarief wees wat geld. Ditkan egter later na gelang van verdere vereiste beperkings hersien word.

’n Verhoging van 8% in waterverbruikstariewe word voorgestel.

2.1.13 Huishoudings in wooneenhede op gemengdegebruik-eiendomme kan om’n gratis toewysing van 6 kℓ per eenheid per maand aansoek doen. ’nBeëdigde verklaring sal vereis word, en die aansoek sal op grond van diepersentasie van die hoofgebruik ondersoek en oorweeg word.

Hoogtepunte van voorgestelde wysigings

• Die persentasie stygings in blok 2 van die volledig huishoudelike kategorieoorskry die standaardstyging weens die verlaging in die subsidievlak in hierdieblok, wat op sy beurt deur verbruikspatrone en die watervraagstrategiegenoodsaak word.

• Trapsgewyse tariewe (1-6) is vanaf 1 Julie 2013 vir die huishoudelikegroepskategorie ingestel op grond van vorige oorlegpleging met kliënte.Verdere stappe is gedoen om dié kategorie verder in lyn met die volledigehuishoudelike kategorie te bring.

• Veranderinge in diverse tariewe en prosedures, onder meer die voortgesettestygings met betrekking tot behandelde afvalwater (bepaald vir gholfbane),uitroeptariewe van watervraagbestuurtoestelspanne vir kliënte wat niédeernisgevalle is nie, sowel as voorafbetaalde brandkrane, word in bylae 4 bydie begrotingsdokument uiteengesit.

• ’n Nuwe tarief vir die toepassing van serwitute van deurgang met betrekkingtot water sowel as die vereistes vir deposito’s/waarborge wat in geval vaninfrastruktuurskade aangewend moet word.

• Staking van verbruikersdeposito’s vir huishoudelike kliënte met ingang van1 Julie 2014.

2.2. SANITASIE

Drie stelle sanitasietariewe word voorgestel (10%-verminderingstarief,20%-verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppelaan die vlak van watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die10%-verminderingstarief as norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, sal dít dietarief wees wat geld. Dit kan egter later na gelang van verdere vereiste beperkingshersien word.

’n Verhoging van 8% in sanitasieverbruikstariewe word voorgestel.

• RESIDENSIËLE TARIEWE: Algehele styging in inkomste uit die groep is 7,63%,maar individuele kliënte sal waarskynlik verskillende stygings waarneem opgrond van werklike verbruik. Die verskil tussen die gemiddelde en werklikestyging spruit uit die verhaling van die tekort aan inkomste uit die hulptarief virblok 1.

• Verbruikers wat 450 kWh per maand ontvang, sal dieselfde persentasie stygingwaarneem, ongeag die tarief wat vir hulle geld. Daar is dus geen verandering indie subsidievlak wat hierdie verbruikers op die hulptarief ontvang nie.

• GRATIS BASIESE ELEKTRISITEIT: Hulptariefkliënte wat minder as 250 kWh permaand ontvang, sal ’n gratis basiese toevoer van 60 kWh kry, terwyl diegene wattussen 250 kWh en 450 kWh per maand ontvang ’n gratis basiese toevoer van25 kWh per maand sal kry.

• Die kategorie “Klein kragverbruiker 1” met die buitespits-kombinasie word sedert1 Julie 2012 tot slegs bestaande kliënte beperk. Die buitespits-komponente stygook met ’n bogemiddelde bedrag om hierdie tarief uiteindelik uit te faseer.

• Tydspesifieke tariewe is herstruktureer om minimum pariteit met Eskom Megaflexte verseker.

LET WEL: Maandelikse diensheffings word bereken as die daaglikse diensheffing,vermenigvuldig met die getal dae in die rekeningtydperk.

all bases.In the short time they’ve been to-

gether, acoustic duo, Stone Jets ha-ve already proven that they can sa-tisfy almost any taste.From &Union and Alexander Bar

in Cape Town, to Bay Harbour Mar-ket and Ellingtons, vocalist GivenNkanyane and guitarist, ManfredKlose, are comfortable on almostany stage.Given has a novel way of explai-

ning the band’s sound: “Thinkabout a mixture of beef stroganoff,with chutney and banana.”“It doesn’t seem like it works, but

that is some delicious stuff.”Moving away from food,Given ex-

plains that their music is a mixtureof everything they like which stemsfrom where they come from. Forexample, Given comes from an R’nB, gospel, jazzy background, whileManfred has more of a rock back-ground.

Song writingGiven says he likes to think their

music is a mixture of blues, a littlebit of rock, some folk, and “a hint ofeverything”.Manfred points out that they are

still growing with their sound andare writing as many songs as possi-ble at the moment, in an attempt tofigure out what exactly it is thatthey do.“For now we just want to make

goodmusic and seewhat people’s re-actions are to that,” he says.Stone Jets formed only last year,

but today (Wednesday) they are re-leasing their debut-EP,River, whichincludes five songs that the two re-corded when they came together.The EP will be available from

most digital distribution stores, butphysical copies will be available attheir shows. They are also looking

at distributing it through local mu-sic stores.Stone Jets are working on their

first full-length album which theyhope to release later in theyear. “Weare writing as many songs as wecan, so that our debut album is jam-packed with hard-knock hits,” Gi-ven says.Given started writing songs when

he lived inCapeTownbefore, but be-cause he didn’t understand the in-dustry, he decided to move back toJohannesburg, where he kept wri-ting and tried to put a band together.

inMarch last year to record some ofthe songs he had written, which iswhere he met Manfred, who was toplay guitar on his recordings.“It was like Eskom had just swit-

performing at Alexander Bar andperforming after a band called The

Swifts, at the River Club.

since he lived in Johannesburg andgetting to perform with them andhave them say they liked Stone Jets’music, was a huge confidence boostfor him. ween Spur and Amarider, the league hasshown a 45% year-on-year growth and hasexceeded all initial projections in termsnumbers and reach. The league has grownexplosively and has expanded from 900 en-tries and 20 events in 2009 to 7506 entrantstaking part in 52 events hosted in nineSouth African provinces as well asneighbouring countries Zimbabwe, Nami-bia and Lesotho.League co-ordinator Meurant Botha of

Racing towards glory

Cyclists had a hard time in very wet conditions on Sunday at the final cycling race of the 2014 Hero Challenge Criterium series at Century City.PHOTO: CHRIS HITCHCOCK

What a day Sunday turned out to beat the fourth and final cycling raceof the 2014 Hero Challenge Criteri-

um series at Century City.The event started at 14:15 with the catego-

ry 4 race, which hosted all club membersthat wanted to participate, followed by cate-gory 3 at 15:15 which comprised of the u-16,u-14 and u-12 cyclists.

Shortly after category 3 started their racethe skies turned grey and opened up with aslight drizzle, but the race ended in sunlightand relatively dried up roads. Everyonesighed in relief, but unfortunately this wasshort lived. As category 2 lined up the skiesopened up once again, more fiercely thistime. Miserable weather aside, the ridersheld on and raced their hearts out in a verytight and often nail biting race.

EliteIn category 1 for elite riders, we were

joined by some of the top cyclists in SouthAfrica. This included the Bonita’s Pro Cy-cling Team, WCC Africa MTN QhubekaFeeder Team and ASG. This promised to bean edge-of-your-seat race and the cyclistsdidn’t disappoint.

From the first bell the racers gave it every-thing theyhaddespite thewet and rainy con-ditions. RyanFelgate ofASG took first in theelite category, followed by Clint HendricksandMorne vanNiekerkwhoweremere splitseconds apart. Maroesjka Matthee, a multi-ple SA champion, took the honours in the la-dies’ category.

HotspotsThere were three hotspots during the elite

race at the 15, 30 and 45-minute marks withClint Hendricks taking the first spot, JaydeJulius the second and Ryan Felgate thethird.

The fun isn’t over yet. Lights By Linea inassociationwithKIADiepRiver, Trek, Craftand eCentric Payment Systems will host awinter series of long distance one-day races,with another group of criterium events inSpring.
