    Dt is dieStadKaapstad sehoudingoor

die stukkende wieke van die historie-

se Onze Molen-meul in di dorpshuiskom-

    pleks in Durbanville.

    Kaapse regering gewend.

    weet.

    ges.

    Theron het voorts in sy

e-pos verwys na die R10 mil-

    joenwat spandeer gaanword

    om die Pampoenkraal-uit-

    span in Voortrekkerweg in

    Durbanville tot n dorps-

    plein op te knap.

    Ek skiet nie daardie pro-

jek af nie, maar ons voel da-

    rem die meul as historiese

    gedenkwaardigheid verdien

    ook aandag.

    Mense kom besoek die

    meul en dis n toeriste-be-

    sienswaardigheid vir Dur-

    banville, het hy ges.

    Uys het hierop ges die

    twee projekte kan nie met

    mekaar vergelyk word nie,

    want die begrotings is uit

    verskillende lyndeparte-

    mente beskikbaar gestel.

Die R10 miljoen gaan ook oor n tydperk

van drie jaar beskikbaar gestel word. Ons

moet ekonomiese groei in Durbanville se sa-

kekern bevorder, en die opheffing van die

    openabre areas is deel daarvan.

    Daar gaanookdrie sekerheidskameras gen-

    ys gesit is.

Dt volgens JohDorfling, hoof van dieHo-

    erskoolD.F.Malan, oordi tradisionele ver-

toning tussen vier Bellvillese skole, wat vir

die afsienbare toekoms by die Bellville-sta-

dion gekanselleer is. Dorfling het laat weet

dat D.F. Malan op eie houtjie n vertoning

    vir ouers gaan aanbied.

Hoewel daar by 2015 seMTBSnie die tra-

    disionele pawiljoenvertonings gaan wees

nie, sal daar beslis genoeg opwinding

wees, het Dorfling oor hul planne ges.

Sy s op Woensdagaand tussen 18:00 en

18:30 wil D.F. Malan sy ouers en ondersteu-

ners vermaak en verras met sy Rebelle-

    kreet by die Bellville-atletiekstadion.

here are no more safe havens in the

    city.

This seems to be the overall senti-

ment of patrons of the Tyger Valley Shop-

ping Centre who have taken to socialmedia

since Monday to make their discontent

clear after an armed robbery at a popular

    family restaurant.

The Spur in the shopping centre was

robbed by five men near closing time on

Sunday evening. The robbers posed as cli-

ents before holdingup staff and patrons and

fleeing with cash and digital goods.

    Shopping centre spokesperson Laretha

Blom confirmed the robbers had fired one

shot at security guards giving chase, then

    fled in a silver vehicle.

Some of the comments on TygerBurgers

Facebook page included one from Cheryl

    Willemse, asking: Whenwill this madness

    end??? (sic)

Stefan Eksteen said: Theyre gonna eat

us! Im going to Australia. Sad and angered.

Next youll see dinerswith glocks and 9 mm

    at the tables. Feeling concerned.

Ivan Vanhooydonck said: No ways. Its

getting closer to our doorstep, with Tracey

Lee Appolis Johannes adding: And we ate

here a few nights ago! Scary.

Ruth Slabbert Frazer said in Afrikaans:

One is not safe anywhere in the country

anymore. Spur is not seeing me again

    soon...

Kerisha Naidoo thought the robbery was

    simply insane!.

Hadlay Mclean said none of his friends

had heeded his warning to steer clear of the

steer chop shop: I keep telling you people

to stay away fromSpur. No one ever listens.

Sucks that this happened though. Hectic.

These were just some of the hundreds of

comments posted as the story published on

    the TygerBurger website started circulat-

ing on Monday. In the meantime, police

have had no luck making any arrests.

    Provincial police spokesperson Captain

FC vanWyk, said the (getaway) vehiclewas

later spotted in Nyanga by police.

The suspects tried to evade the police

and they shot at police members and a

    chase ensued, said Van Wyk.

He said the car stopped at the corner of

New Eisleben and Klipfontein Roads and

the suspects jumped out and fled on foot.

Some of the stolen items and cash were re-

covered. It was found that the Golf was hi-

jacked in Mitchells Plain on Friday 6 Feb-

ruary. He asked the publics help to find

    the perpetrators.

Police are investigating a business rob-

bery, attempted murder and hijacking cas-

es and request anyone with information

that could lead to the arrest of the suspects

to please contact Crime Stop on 08600

    10111.

    Provincial community safety minister

Dan Plato said the only way to get rid of the

scourge of business robberies, was to invest

    heavily in additional security measures.

We are very worried about the increas-

ing number of robberies at centres.

This shows a great measure of despera-

tion from the syndicates to lay their hands

    on money.

Added security measure will come at a

great cost, but this is the price we will have

to pay to get rid of this scourge, Plato said.

    No safe havens

ith two decades of hits under their

belts, Dr Victor and the Rasta Re-

    bels have become synonymous

    with feel-good music.

Thats exactly what fans can expect when

the band take to the stage at the Liqui-Fruit

Amphitheatre in Paarl for Local is Lekker

    2015.

The band is one of three acts Cape Town

audiences chose to perform at the show, the

only one in the countrywhere the public de-

    cide the line-up.

Band frontman Dr Victor says hes loo-

king forward to the outdoor show, which ta-

kes place on Saturday 21 March.

I like open-air concerts because everyt-

hing is bigger: bigger dance moves, bigger

applause and a huge sound system to play

    through.

Dr Vic, as he is also known, says the band

is planning to play some of the hits that ma-

de them a household name in South Africa.

Most of the songs Ive had the opportuni-

ty to sing on are crossover songs and they

appeal to all races and the whole family,

the I love to Truck singer says. Hes also

achieved success with songs that were alre-

ady hits in the 60s and 70s before the Rasta

Rebels recorded their ownversions, such as

Eddy Grants Give Me Hope Joanna.

I believe a good song will always be a

    good song, he says.

Dr Victors musical career has seen him

share the stagewith international stars like

Gloria Estefan and Janet Jackson, but says

two of the biggest highlights of his career

are meeting Paul Simon in 1995 and Tina

    Turner in 1996.

He is also involved with local talent

though and even co-wrote and produced the

popular You Touch Me (Horny) album by

Dawnay. The title track off the album spent

a record-breaking 22 weeks at the top of lo-

    cal charts in 2001.

Dr Victor is currently working with the

artist known as Ricardo, whose single I love

you Daddy was a huge hit in the 80s.

The brother needs my help and Im just

reaching out to him as a friend, he says.

Dr Victor also hopes to finish his smooth

jazz guitar project and his long overdue

    Christmas album this year.

For now though, fans can look forward to

seeing him with the Rasta Rebels at Local

is Lekker 2015 where theyll be sharing the

stage with Theuns Jordaan and Garth Tay-

    lor.

The show is being presented by Tyger-

Burger, Smile 90.4fm and CapeGate Shop-

    pingCentrewho gave readers, listeners and

shoppers the chance to nominate and then

vote for their favourite local acts last year,

thereby giving them the chance to choose

their own line up for the annual concert.

Dr Victor says he likes the idea of audien-

ces choosing performers. It would really

    stretch our creativity as musicians.

Iwould like to thank all the fans for their

continued support over the years and

thanks for voting forme to perform at Local

isLekker 2015. Im looking forward toagreat

    gig, he concludes.

operasie in Maart verlede jaar n geleent-

Toe ek sien, toe staanhierdieman inmy

kamerdeur.

haar oorlede. Hulle het reeds sewe jaar by

    Aristea in n huis gebly.

Pool was twee keer tevore getroud. Haar

eerste man, Andries Bester, is op 49 jaar

oorlede, en haar tweedeman, Joos Pool, op

70-jarige leeftyd. Pool, wat opgelei is as

maatskaplike werker, het daarna by haar

    dogter opRiversdal gaanbly. Toehaar dog-

ter in Junie 2012 oorlede is, het sy in n ka-

mer by Aristea ingetrek in afwagting op

    as chaperone kon saamneem.

Ek is baie Calvinisties en het ordentlik

grootgeword. Ek het waardes en wil graag

spore trap waarinmy kinders en kleinkin-

ders kan volg. Ek het gevoel as ons n pad

gaan saamstap, moet ons dit reg doen. Die

huwelik is nog vir my heilig.

    sielsgenote is.

Daar is

Nou trou hulle n dag n Valentynsdag by

Eensgezind.

selbaai, waar hulle by familie en vriende

    gaan kuier.

    Liefde blom behoorlik by ouetehuis

usiness in Voortrekker Road in Dur-

banville may be disrupted when con-

struction work on a R10 million

project to upgrade the Pampoenkraal out-

span to a heritage town square commences

    this month.

The Pampoenkraal outspan is situated on

the open space between Voortrekker Road,

Main Road, Wellington Road and Church

    Street.

This site accommodates the townhall and

played an important role in the develop-

    ment of Durbanville

The first phase of this project will contin-

    ue for approximately five months.

This phase of construction entails the re-

placing of paving on both sides of Voortrek-

ker Road, paving of the road surface, the in-

stallation and replacing of services and the

installation of tree planters and irrigation.

During this time, traffic and parking fa-

    cilities inVoortrekkerRoadwill be disrupt-

ed, warned Berendine Irrgang of Heritage

    Resource Management of the Environmen-

tal and Heritage Management of the Table

Bay district in a progress report to Sub-

    council 7 (Koeberg).

This report, which will be on the agenda

of the monthly meeting of subcouncil 7

(Koeberg) on Monday 16 February, is avail-

    able on the Citys website.

All possible attemptswill bemade by the

contractor to limit disruption during this

period, Irrgang said in the report.

The aim is to have amulti purpose public

square with a low maintenance perform-

ance, that can be transformed from a play-

fulwater park for small children, to an exhi-

bition space or a concert venue with mini-

mal effort, according to the report.

The site contains a rich history revolving

around initially being an outspan where

there was a spring, water furrow, a feeding

and drinking trough and evidence of hu-

man movement and activity connected to

    the establishment of farms.

The idea of the tracks left behind by old

oxwagons has been interpreted as curvilin-

ear surface elements. The introduction of

water as a major feature on site celebrates

the historic fountain and presence of water

    as a founding element.

The adjacent Voortrekker Road has been

incorporated into the space to allow busi-

ness to relate more directly to the site. The

area in front of the town hall has been re-

    conceptualised as an amphitheatre. Provi-

sionhas beenmade for anumber of security

    cameras.

The design will be implemented over two

financial years. The first phase will be im-

plementedbymeans of an existing term ten-

der and will focus on the Voortrekker Road

    area.

The second phase of construction is limit-

ed to the boundaries of the public open

space and will commence in July and con-

    tinue for approximately one year.

The town hall will be closed for events

    during this entire period.

According to the report, the first imple-

mentation phase will be funded from the

R500 000 ward allocation, which has been

made available for the 2014/15 financial

    year.

The remainder of the project will be fund-

ed by capital funding from the Spatial Plan-

    ning and Urban Design department.

In this regard, R1,1 million has been allo-

cated for the 2014/15 financial year and a

    further R8,9 million for 2015/16.

Its fifth birthday celebration heralded ex-

pansion at Capegate Mediclinic in response

    to a fast growing community.

Amidst much excitement at the celebrati-

on held at the hospital on Monday morning,

    hospitalmanagerCarolDefty explainedwhy

    expansion was necessary.

Due to the swift population growth in the

area, it is no secret the hospital has in recent

times suffered a shortage of beds. When we

opened on 8 February 2010, we had 144 beds

and six theatres, but initially only used 90

beds and four theatres. Within three years,

however, we had to open the entire hospital.

Add to that the excellent standard of local

specialised services and a loyal core staff

compliment and you have the winning for-

mula for our success, she said.

The hospital is currently adding to its its

paediatric and neonatal ICU wards and is

awaiting approval from the health depart-

ment to add another 120 beds, two theatres

    and a day hospital.

Defty says construction on the expansion

is set to start early next year.

We always strive to offer a better service

to our patients and appreciate feeback from

the community, positive or negative, to be

able to deliver better service, she adds.

    Free health screenings, which included

glucose, blood pressure and cholestrol tests

were offered free of charge in the hospital

foyer onMonday, while those who could af-

ford it, enjoyed some birthday cake with

    staff members.

    geraas geniet nie. Beide hierdie

    skulpdier-ornamente aan die

    kante van my haarlose koppie

    kom derhalwe kort-kort in

    opstand.

Gelukkig is die stilte van my

    kantoor n ontsnappingsden,

    waar hulle saam met my

    gemoed, die onstuimige gewoel

    van die onder-Kaap kan systap

en dan soms na niks hoef te

    luister nie.

Ons almal ken die manne in

    die klein voorstedelike karre-

tjies met die bre tekkies, die

    formule een-en-n-driekwart-ag-

    teroorhang-sitplekke en die

    die hip-hop-doef-daf-bas-klanke

    die osoonlaag ingeslinger word

    Soos iemand onder in die

dorp eenkeer ges het: As tjy

    aankom, dan maak die ander

    Hoekom is dit net manlike

    bestuurders wat dit so uiters

nodig ag om sy gebrek aan

    musieksmaak en respek vir

ander mense se ore aan die

strate van die dorp bloot te

Be aware that there are people

    phoning your domestic ser-

    vants/maids to enquire about

    their employers names and

    telephone numbers.

    They then phone you and

    pose as your domestic workers

relatives and tell you she has

    died and they need financial

    assistance.

    They are quite convincing as

a woman who said she was my

    maids daughter was actually

crying when we talked on the

    phone. Another thing that has

    been happening is young

    women going door to door

asking if you have a domestic

servant and could they speak to

her. They might also be on a

    fact-finding expedition with a

view to pulling a similar scam.

    A few days ago I used a

disabled parking bay in front of

    the Edgemead shopping centre.

I have used this facility for

many years as it is convenient-

ly situated in front of the ATM

and it is always easy for my

wife to find a shopping trolly I

use as a walking aid. On this

    specific day, after climbing on

top of the curbstones with my

two crutches to walk to the

    ATM, I was left dumbfounded

    by a very healthy person

    pushing a pram who confronted

me to tell me I was parking

    illegally. When I returned to

my car I noticed a message

painted in white on the tarred

    service reading moms and

    tots. While standing, still

upset, it occured to me that at

the front of the centre there

    were now parking bays alloca-

ted further away from where I

was parked. I noticed an open

    bay about five vehicles away.

Ideal for winter rainy days. The

    new arrangements prompts me

    to ask the following questions:

Are there bike riders who are

    handicapped? Do moms and

tots fall within the category of

    handicapped and disabled? Do

    the architcts of these projects

    know the meaning of physically

Daarom beveilig ons onsself met ho

    mure, veiligheidshekke, alarmstelsels en

kwaai honde. Buurtwagte dien as byko-

deurentyd blootgestel daaraan. En dit is

immers elke landsburger se basiese reg

om beskerm te word as hy of sy n

    openbare plek besoek.

Dit bring mee dat hierdie situasie n

n prioriteitsaak vir die polisie mt

word. Spesiale eenhede wat op sentrum-

    misdaad fokus, is n noodsaaklikheid.

    he journey fromplaying ablikgitaar in

    Athlone to playingCarnegieHall start-

ed when Gammie Lakay fell in love

with the sounds that surrounded him in his

    neighbourhood.

If youve been to a David Kramer produc-

tion in the last 25 years youve experienced

the musical magic that happens when he

    gets that guitar groove going.

While working with Kramer and the late

Taliep Petersen in their productions tour-

ing the world has been a dream come true,

    its a journey still continuing.

In December last year he was part of the

band that went to Carnegie Hall in New

York and said when he stepped onto that

stage he thought back to his roots.

Iwas very emotional, he says. Was this

laaitie who learnt his music on the streets

    really standing on this stage?

As I plugged in for the sound check and

the first notes of my guitar rang out I knew

it was not a dream - my passion for music

    had paid off.

    Surrounded by music

Gammie points out that growing up in 7th

Avenue in Athlone you could not help hav-

    ing music influence you.

This is the same road as the famous But-

    ler family, he says.

Music came to you from the corners

where guys were singing, the langarm

bands, the Christmas Choirs and of course

the Minstrels. When I first heard the sound

of the guitar with the choirs I knew that I

    wanted to play.

There was nomoney for an instrument at

that time so some ingenuity saw him mak-

ing his own guitar from a tin can.

I just had to play something, he laughs.

There were no formal lessons so I just

watched. My guitar may not have been in

tune but my fingers were making the right

moves and in my head I was a star.

Eventually he got a real guitar for his 13th

birthday and he started taking his music

more seriously, learning from those around

him and getting involved with the min-

    strels.

My music school was the streets, the ra-

    dio and gramophone. Therewas alwaysmu-

sic around me and I wanted to play every-

thing from the Beatles to Jimi Hendrix.

Eventually hewas invited to join the band

    Harold and the Hippies.

We were very popular on the local

    scene, he remembers.

Richard John Smith was also part of the

band at the time and we had a bit of a hit

with the song Storybook Children, but the

radio would not play it because hippies

were supposed to be bad,he laughs.

Since then he has played with many

bandsbut it is the relationshipwith themin-

strels that eventually got him joining the

    Kramer/Petersen family.

    Regular gigs

I always knew Taliep (Petersen) from

working with the minstrels and he always

loved my playing. For years he would tell

me that hewanted toworkwithme but both

of us were always busy with other projects.

    Eventually Howard Links (bass player

    forKramer/Petersen) rockedupatmyplace

and just said kom, Taliep soek vir jou

(come, Taliep is looking for you).

Since then David has not stopped using

us as his backing band and for recordings.

Weve built up a good relationship, adding

that real Cape flavour to his music.

A particularly proud moment was when

David included my tune Ons Jol Innie Hei-

develd for the concert in Carnegie hall.

Of course we eventually sangOns Jol In-

nie Carnegie Hall and watching the people

get up and dance made me realise how

proud I was to be working with the best in

    the South African music industry.

The musical journey is far from over for

Gammie there is still a lot that he is doing

    and wants to do.

Recording is high on that list of getting

his original material on an album, he wants

to teach more and still loves gigging when

not working on a Kramer production.

He has formed a group Fantacy with sing-

er Vincent Carlindt and they gig at the

Groun Coffee Restaurant (4 Denver Road,

Lansdowne) on Thursdays from 20:00 and

on Saturdays at Cafe Royale (also in Lans-

    downe Road) from 17:00.

I am available for any type of gig, he

    says.

VGammie Lakay can be contacted on083 776 5092.

Check Gammie in action at https://www.youtu-

    be.com/watch?v=9rBjnakTmWA.

    @linnertmb

    n

word. As jy kyk na die gestremdheidsomge-

wing in Suid-Afrika, vind jy dat baie mense

n standaard-rolstoel van die regering ont-

vang.

meen hy. Di passie het Mark van loopbaan

laat verander en by Chairman Industries

    laat beland.

Hy lag wanneer hy aan TygerBurger ver-

tel, nee, di ironiese naam was nie sy idee

nie.

    arie.

    Hierdie is eenvandie grootsteuitdagings

    s baie mense help.
