stuk grond langs Albert Philander-weg souintrek, nog op die stuk Sanral-grond inLwandle sal aanbly, is verlede Woensdag-aand aan gemeenskaplede deur die Kaap-stadse burgemeester, Patricia de Lille, oor-gedra.De Lille het die betrokke aand sowat 1 000

inwoners toegespreek by die plek waar daarvir dae aaneen buitebande aan die brand ge-steek is en selfs pale en heinings opgerig is.Hoewel die betogings vreedsaam was, het

lede van die polisie se openbare orde-een-heid Donderdag beslag gelê op vyf emmersmet plofstof.Dis vermoedelik deur besetters na die ge-

bied gebring.De Lille het gesê: “Die Stad Kaapstad het

’n plan om families na padreserwes te skuif.Dit gaan nege maande neem voor die planklaar is, maar ons is bereid om die familiesvan Lwandle by daardie plan te voeg, sodatons ’n permanente oplossing vir hulle kankry,” het De Lille gesê.

modeer van Solis Town, Greenfields, Polile,Wag ’n Bietjie, Macassar se agterplaasbewo-ners en die gesinne wat deur die Sanral-uit-setting geraak is.“Dis ’n hoëdigtheidsontwikkeling en sal

verseker dat die behuisingsnood van die ge-identifiseerde gemeenskappe aangespreekword,” lui die verklaring.

eenkoms met die Stad en nasionale departe-ment van menslike nedersetting verwel-kom. “Ons is bly oor die uitkoms.”Hy het die Lwandle-uitsetting en hervesti-

ging deur Sanral as ’n politieke skuif be-skryf.“Sanral wil tolpaaie op die N2 en die N1

oprig – iets wat die StadKaapstad teenstaan.Ons wil nie ’n Johannesburgse tolstelsel hênie.“Ons is in onderhandeling met Sanral en

het ook ’n hofbevel gekry,” hetVanDalen ge-sê.

A Youth Day event aimed at upliftingthe communitywasmarredwhenpoli-ce forced it to shutdown due to appa-rent noise complaints.Members of the KuiLove WetlandsProject hosted the organisations veryfirst community event this week – theKuiLoveYouthDayEvent – in celebra-tion of National Youth Day.Kuilove member Bryony Petersensaid despite the shutdown the day – fil-led with community soccer matches –drew a crowd from all over Kuils Ri-ver.“With the youth coming together,children dancing and singing to mu-sic, and locals supporting the KuiLovemarket, this fun-filled family day wasa great success,” Bryony said.The organisation had a line-up of lo-cal DJ’s providing music. “In supportof the DJ talent of Kuils River we pro-vided a platform for these talented ar-tist to showcase their work,” she said.“What a pity that the police came toshut this event down in the late after-noon after receiving complaints thatthe music was too loud.“The officers refused to listen to rea-son, saying that this government landwas their’s and that we had no rightto come together here, threatening toconfiscate DJ equipment and arrestcommunity members enjoying themusic.“After receiving permission to runthis event and with the consent of ourcommunity, this incident put a dam-per on the day as the music died.”She said the organisation felt sadde-ned that such a lovely day was cutshort for no good reason, but they feelpositive about the growth of the causeand that in future the community canenjoy such events together as a unitedfront.

Residents in Fountain Village, BlueDowns are up in arms over the occu-pationof avacantpiece of land in their

area by Mfuleni backyard dwellers.On Thursday morning about 50 people,

most of whom were women, tried to erectshacks on an open piece of land along GreatCircle Road, Fountain Village. The groupwas stopped only to return the followingday for a second attempt.On Friday afternoon several disgruntled

residents convened in the street, alongwithMetro Police and law enforcement officials.The group of shack dwellers were mostlyfrom Mfuleni, TygerBurger was told.One of the residents, Nomhlaliso Nogoba,

a member of the Ses’Khona People’s RightsMovement, said the backyard dwellers ca-me from different areas, includingMfuleni,Site C in Khayelitsha, Strand and Kraaifon-tein.“Wewant this land becausewe are backy-

arders and we are not working. We are sickand tired of paying rent eachmonth.We aredependent on child support grants and wecannot attend to theneeds of ourkids becau-se we are using the money to pay rent,”Nomhlaliso said.She said if they move onto the vacant

land, at least they will be able to buy foodand clothes for their children.“Wewere in Blackheath but the residents

there chased us away. They claim that thecrime rate will increase because of us, sonow we are building our shacks here,”Nomhlaliso added.A concerned Fountain Village resident

who did not want to be named said he doesnot mind the construction of houses but heis against the idea of shacks. “It will causemore damage to our area. Our children willnot be able to play or go out anymore.”Another resident, Sylvia Swartbooi, said

her concern is that crime might increase.She said the landowners should employ se-curity guards in the area.“The residents have to pay for homes but

theMfuleni residents want to stay for free,”said resident Ronald Abrahams said, “I amconcerned that if the shacks go up therewillbe more housebreakins.”Abigail Louw, his neighbour, said they

patrolled the area on Thursday night butthe next morning several backyarders re-turned at about 07:00.Apart from the city’s Metro Police and

law enforcement, their Anti Land InvasionUnit also kept a close eye on Friday.Community leader Maurette Dolman on

Monday said several shacks were erectedover the weekend.“Wewant to the community to stand toge-

ther and stop them,” Maurette said.Ward councillor Wilma Brady confirmed

that several shacks went up over the wee-kend.“Five on Friday, on Sunday nine went up

and onMonday another four, but they wereall removed by the developers.”According to her, security guards from

Protea Coin were also attacked and had tobe removed.“The community, both sides, will be mee-

ting with the developers again in this co-ming week,” Brady said.

rywhere and a cacophony sounded allround. The big vuvuzela signalled everytime a goal was scored. Neighbours com-peted to blow the loudest. We even calledeach other out by blowing them duringhalftime to talk about the game. We dis-cussed goals scored, corners wasted andfouls acted out to cause the referee toaward unnecessary penalties.Every car had at least one flag ormirror

sock attached to it displaying the SouthAfrican flag and/or other country’s.Whenstopping at the robots we all just smiledat each other.Most people adopted another country af-

ter Bafana Bafana failed to go through tothe next round.We as Capetonians travelled by train

just to walk the Fanwalk. Even though so-me didn’t have tickets towatch thematch,we were there. And we will never forget.

A total of 356 suspects were arrested thispast week during police operations inthe Kuils River cluster.The cluster comprises theKuilsRiver,

Kleinvlei and Mfuleni police stations.Provincial police spokesperson Cap-

tain Frederick vanWyk said onMonday30 houses were searched for drugs du-ring theweekwhich led to the confiscati-on of 634 liters of alcohol, Mandrax ta-blets with an approximate street valueof R2 225, tik to the value of R2 220 anddagga with a street value of R820.A total of 62 suspectswere arrested du-

ring these searches, on charges relatingto drugs, Van Wyk said.The remainder of the arrests made va-

ried between charges relating to mur-der, attempted murder, common as-

sault, assault with the intent to causegrievous bodily harm, drunk driving,reckless and negligent driving, possessi-on of dangerous weapon, malicious da-mage to property, housebreaking andtheft, the possession of an illegal firearmas well as the possession of a prohibitedfirearm.Other charges include dealing in li-

quorwithout a licence, the possession ofa stolen motor vehicle, crimen injuria,domestic violence, fraud, rape, resistingarrest, discharging a firearm, imperso-nating a peace officer and assault of a pe-ace officer.Van Wyk said 67 of the suspects arre-

sted were kept overnight and releasedon fines for charges relating to beingdrunk in public or riotous behaviour.

The Mfuleni police are still searching for agroup of armed robbers who attacked a lo-cal business in the Blackheath Industrialarea nearly three months ago.Captain Frederick van Wyk, spokesper-son for the provincial police, said the threemen entered the business premises of Wag-on Burner, a wholesale liquor outlet situa-ted inButtskopRoad, onSaturday 22Marchand threatened the personnel and patrons.The robbers fled with an undisclosedamount of cash.“Preliminary information shows twoma-les walked into the shop and pointed at thecustomers with a firearm, demanding mo-ney.“One of them went up to the cashier’swindow demanding cash. A third male sus-pect joined the other two and they robbedseven victims of an undisclosed amount ofcash,” Van Wyk said.The robbers also assaulted some of the

customers.“It is alleged that threemore suspects, ar-med with a rifle, stood guard outside theshop. No shots were fired.”According to the police the suspects fledin a white Toyota Quantam minibus-taxiwith an unidentified number plate.The police are investigating a case of bu-siness robbery.No arrests have been made.Van Wyk said two of the suspects werecaught on camera. The footage clearlyshows one suspect carrying a firearm.“The suspect armedwith the firearmwasseen dressed in long khaki trousers and adark brown leather jacket. The second sus-pect was wearing a blue longsleeve track-suit top with white stripes at the back, de-nim jeans and red cap. about addicts asks: “Is it nottime that we reopen thediscussion around the deathpenalty?”Our country decided to

abolish the death penaltyalmost twenty years ago, notby political parties or parlia-ment, but by the ConstitutionalCourt which delivered thisdecisive verdict with a unani-mous 11-0 vote.America was not so lucky.

This superpower and all othernations where the deathpenalty is in force are the mostviolent in the world.Not a week goes past that

the news is not dominated bykillings, bombings, abductionsor other forms of violenceemanating from these coun-tries. Death penalty is a violentact and can only operate in anenvironment of fear, hatred,vengeance, racism and retribu-tion. People who constantlyadvocate reintroduction of thedeath penalty are sooner orlater going to commit violentacts themselves. Clive Derby-Lewis and his henchmanJanusz Walus are a goodexample. Friday nights onecould hear him instigatingright-wing violence on radiophone-in programmes.Where will this bloodshed

but most units were 100% dry.The rest I managed to squeezea tiny amount of liquid out of,which half fixed the small itemfor which it had been intended.This would normally take one

superglue squeeze at most, butI had to discard all the units. Ithink there were six units.It was very disappointing.No slip was given, so I didn’t

even try to take them back. Iwonder if someone tested thesuperglue in the stock at theshop?I was so angry, I threw

everything away.In retrospect, I should have

looked for an expiry date andat least gone back to tell them,but reading about Lynn’sresponse I wonder if it wouldhave mattered?

Agroupof primary school childrenwere re-cently given the rare opportunity to take apeek into a police holding cell.In an attempt to motivate them to live a

crime free life, the grade 5 and 6 learnersfrom the Kalkfontein Primary School weretaken to the Kuils River police station andshown the holding cells where criminalsare kept.“The trip was basically an awareness

tour.We took them through the police stati-on just to show what happens from thepoint when you are arrested,” said chair-person of the sector 2 police forum MartinBurke who helped organise the tour.“We spoke to them about what crime is,

the consequences thereof and how it affectsyour life.“We told them that it makes it difficult

for people to have a future,” he said.Burke was accompanied by crime forum

project coordinator Selwyn Swartz, sectorcommander W/O Jerome Daniels, commu-nity worker Una Faroa and her assistantMichelle Arendse.

A law expert also explained to the yo-ungsters the legal aspects that normally fol-low an arrest.“We started the day with a motivational

talk, then we took them through to the hol-ding cells where the suspects are someti-mes kept,” said Burke.“We then asked the children if they wan-

ted to endup in jail, andwanted to be lockedup in such a bad smelling place.“Afterwardswe took them to theCommu-

nity Service Centre where we showed themwhere the suspects are taken. At the end ofthe session we gave them a list of questionswhere we asked them what crime is andwhat can happen to them, which they thenhad to complete.”The next group of youngsters, the grade

sevens, will be given a similar tour on Fri-day 21 June.“We had a very fruitful day, it was a very

good experience,” Burke said.He said children from Irista Primary

School, as well as from Sarepta, will also begiven the opportunity to go.“Kalkfontein is the area where most of

the crime happens, therefore we decided totake these young kids first.”

E-cigarette users happily “vaping” in localpubs and restaurants in Cape Town maysoon be out in the cold, as the national De-partment of Health is considering amend-ments to tobacco legislation.

Currently, the “e-cig” cannot be read intothe definition of a tobacco product in termsof the Act, as it does not contain tobacco.

“Amendments are needed to the legislati-on to ensure that e-cigarettes are regulatedand this is currently under consideration,”said city mayco member for health, Bene-dicta van Minnen.

Enquiries“We are not inundated with complaints,

however, there has been an increase in thenumber of enquiries, especially from ma-nagers and owners in the workplace. Thenature of the enquiries are whether smo-king of the product in offices and canteensis allowed; if they should adapt their work-place smoking policy; whether patrons cansmoke the device in the non-smoking areaof restaurants; and whether the fines arethe same as for smoking cigarettes in pu-blic places,” said van Minnen.

According to her, the city specificallywants to know whether they can enforcethe current tobacco legislation on e-cigaret-tes.

AlternativeElectronic cigarettes are an alternative

method of consuming nicotine, the addicti-ve chemical found in tobacco.

They look like cigarettes, but contain notobacco or other harmful chemicals such ascarbon dioxide and tar. The “e-cig”, whichwas patented in China in 2003, is batteryoperated and converts liquid into a vapourthat is inhaled.

Although manufacturers claim it to bethe healthy alternative to tobacco cigaret-tes, there are some concerns over the possi-bility that the vapour exhaled might con-tain harmful elements.

“The jury is still out on exactly how safee-cigarettes are. We know that some esta-blishments allow the use of these devicesindoors because they emit vapour insteadof smoke,” said van Minnen.

She said these devices are currently con-troversial because longer term scientificevidence to support their safety is lacking.

“The World Health Organization (WHO)is currently reviewing the existing eviden-ce around e-cigarettes and preparing a pa-per for submission to the meeting of theParties of the WHO Framework Conventi-on on Tobacco Control, which occurs laterthis year,” she said.

AmbivalentWhen asked whether the city wants to see

the current legislation changed to includee-cigarettes in legislation, the answer wasambivalent.

“Presently, it is not covered in the legisla-tion and we will therefore await guidancefrom the National Department of Health,”she said.

Most crime, such as home invasionsand hijackings, are motivated bygreed. Fewcriminals steal to put food

on the table.Christopher Plum, a 34-year-old former

prisoner who did a stint in prison for armedrobbery, gave insight into the criminalmind.

The talk at Oude Moulen Technical Highschool on Thursday 29 May was attended byresidents, police and the neighbourhoodwatch.

Plum, who served 12 years of his 25-yearsentence for armed robbery, spoke freelyabout his life before his sentencing.

“I believe I am a rehabilitated prisoner.While I was in prison I had time to reflecton the things I did andhow Ihurt the victimsof the robberies I committed,” he said.

“I felt I needed to change. No one shouldbe treated the way I treated people.”

Plum joined the Prison Care and SupportNetwork while in prison. The programme isaimed at empowering inmates and encour-aging their reform. He says many of the peo-ple whom he knew were involved in houserobberies and other crimes, were motivatedsolely by greed.

“They want things that other peoplehave,” he says. “They blame the system,they blame apartheid, but they never blamethemselves.”

An underlying anger builds up withinthem and they try to convince themselves ifthey commit a crime they would makethings even, he says.

“Even though they know they are stealing

material things which can be replaced, thesatisfaction of the crime lasts only a shortwhile.”

Plum was released on Thursday 22 Octo-ber 2009, a pivotal mo-ment for him as he feltrenewed andwanted totransform into a betterperson.

However, he says,his family still be-lievedhewas the same.

“It was difficult formy family to acceptme, but after a whilethey realised I hadchanged. I was a differ-ent man. I was no long-er the uncle who would take his gun, walktwo or three houses down the road, rob thepeople and use themoney to buy food formyfamily. I had changed,” he says.

House robberyPlum explained the process he followed

before committing a house robbery.First he and the thieves he worked with

would find a house suitable to break into.Theywould steal themail, scrutinise it for

any details, and then look up the homeown-er’s name in the telephone directory.

They would then call the number to checkif anyone was at home.

After this theywould go to the address andkeep it under surveillance, checking howmanypeople live there,what time they leavefor work and return, and if there is a domes-tic worker or gardener.

After a week, they would know exactlywhat the residents’ routines were.

Then they would meet and devise a planof action.

“After we have decided on the time andday we would go to the house, one of us

would jump over the wallandwait in the garden – ina place where it is dark,where no one will see us,”he says.

Plum said the real“trouble” starts when res-idents return, pulling into their driveway and get-ting out the car.

They would then strike.“Do not try to be strong

or in control when thishappens. Remember the

robber is just as scared and nervous as youare. They do not want to go to prison or bekilled,” Plum says.

The victim is threatened, taken inside andbound. What follows is the systematic ran-sacking of the house and taking any valua-bles they find.

Plum said they would always get an insid-er to assist with information needed to pulloff the robbery. At business robberies theywould charm the secretary or receptionistand so obtain information. At home robber-ies, they would target domestic workers orgardeners.

The gangwould rent a “nice” car – at a rateof R150 a day – from a car rental agency.They would then drive to the airport, finda car with matching colour and model, andcopy that vehicle’s number plate and serialnumber.

“We had a guy who would cut a newnumber plate for us and we would remove

the number plate from the hired car and re-place it with the new one,” he says.

One of themwould then dress smartly andshow up at a business they are targeting inthe hired car. Once inside they would usual-ly target a woman working at the business.

“We would take her out and get to knowher and after a while the questioning wouldbegin,” he says.

The woman would be asked where the“boss” kept the safe andwhere the panic but-ton is, Plum says. “Wewould then follow theboss to and from work and once we get tothe work premises we would rob them.

“Usually we would not rob a place with apanic button, because it is silent and onecannot hear it. If there is onewewould abortthe robbery,” he said.

Plum’s advice to business owners is to en-sure their staff walk around with cordlesspanic buttons, as the robbers are familiarwith the usual spot a panic button is placed.

“We would know if someone attempts topress the panic button when they keep theirhands below the desk. Do not put your lifeat risk. Keep calm and always do as the rob-ber says.”

Plum said he discovered that throughPrison Care and Support Network’s work-shops and talking anddissecting the circum-stances of his crime, he realised and accept-ed he had no valid reason to be a criminal.

“Blamingmy circumstances on the past isfalse motivation, because we know what weare doing is wrong, especially when we arein the act of committing the crime.We knowdeep down what we are doing could get uskilled, sentenced to prison or result in thedeath of an innocent person. But we do it be-cause we think we will be better off.”

UWC boxers off to national champs

Sinethemba Blom (red) won gold in the Western Cape Boxing championships.

Two UWC boxers have secured their tic-kets to the SouthAfricanNational Box-ing championships after winning their

final bouts in the Western Cape BoxingChampionships held on 7 June.

Sinethemba Blom and Nwabisa Tom bothreceived gold medals, while their teammateSandiso Kota had to settle for bronze afterhe was beaten in the semi-final.

Blom and Tom will travel to East Londonnext month for the national championships,with a goal of getting a place on the SouthAfrican team that will go to the World Box-ing Championships.

OutclassedAt a packed Vuyiseka Community Hall in

Philippi on 7 June, Blom outclassed LungaStemela in what was named the Bout of theTournament to win the light welterweightdivision,while Tomwent through on awalk-over after she didn’t get an opponent in thelight middleweight division.

It was the third time that Blom, a secondyear BA student, beat Stemela in as manybouts this year, and said he was very happy

about the win as he had trained hard for thetournament.

The bigger picture for him nowwas a goldmedal at the national championships, some-thing that has eluded him in the past.

“I’ve always lost in the semi-finals orquar-terfinals, but this year I want to go all theway,” an ecstatic Blom commented.

NervousTom, who is graduating with a BCom in

September, said shewas happy to qualify forthe national championships, but was ner-vous because of going to the national eventwithout fighting.

“Fights would have given me an opportu-nity to test myself so I can improve going tothe nationals. I’m aiming for gold and I’mtraining every day to be ready.”

UWC coach Ginger Mapasa noted that theWestern Cape tournament was very toughand congratulated his boxers for their achie-vements, saying it shows the good work thatthe club is doing. The aim now, he said, wasfor his team to do well in the national cham-pionships andmake the SouthAfrican team.

After a strong start to the 2014 season, SouthAfrica’s Richard Murray from Durbanvilleis a serious contender for amedal at the 2014Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The triathlon is on Thursday 24 July. TheGames start on 23 July and the final day is3 August.

Sascoc announced that Murray, HenriSchoeman,WianSullwald,KateRoberts andGillian Sanders have all been chosen to re-present the country in triathlon.

An initial squad of 155 of the country’s fi-nest athletes in over 15 sporting codes fromaquatics to wrestling has been named.

Murray is currently fourth in the worldrankings behind Javier Gomez from Spain,Jonathan Brownlee from Britain and Mario

Mola also from Spain. Of these three onlyBrownlee will be in action. But Murray hasbeaten both JonathanandAlistairBrownleemore than once this season.

Murray has already represented hiscountry on the big stage at the 2012 LondonOlympicGames, where he finished 17th. Ali-stair won gold and Jonathan bronze.

“I really believe I can win a medal at theCommonwealth Games, but we need a planto be implemented from the South Africanteam. Other countries already have theirplans in place for the race and I hope we cancome up with a winning strategy come Julyin Glasgow. My body will be ready after ra-cing at WTS Hamburg and I believe I canbeat the Brownlees,” said Murray.

nal netball team play a three-test seriesagainst Scotland in Cape Town.The tests will be played at the Velodrome
