Sy het die broodsakkie-hakiekoors aandie einde van 2010 by die Hoërskool DeKuilen begin, en dit het sedertdien aan-

sienlik versprei. Dié projek ís immers vir ’ngoeie doel – vir gratis rolstoele.

Liza MacArthur was in graad 11 toe sy ge-hoor het ’n mens kan die polistireen-hakiesinsamel, waarmee broodsakkies toegebindword, en dit inruil vir rolstoele.

In matriek het sy, as lid van die leerling-

raad, voorgestel hulle moet dié insamelingdoen as deel van hul projekte vir die jaar.

“Ek het toe gedink dis ’n ‘cool’ idee. Hullehet intussenopgehouomin te samel.Mysus-sie gaan nou (by die skool) daarmee aan.

hakies by elke onderwyser se klas bymekaarte maak. Maar ek het gesê hulle kan dan ’nboks gebruik om dit in te sit,” vertel dié me-diese student in haar tweede jaar.

vang dié hakies vanuit verskeie oorderegoor die provinsie.

Dieprojek is reeds sedert 2006 aandie gangen Mary het reeds meer as 200 rolstoele aanbehoeftige mense geskenk.

Liza vertel sy het aan die begin van diejaar weer die projek begin by haar kerk, dieNG Kerk De Eike in Kuilsrivier.

Some 14 children supported by the AmyBiehl Foundation picked up tennis racketsfor the first time at Milnerton Tennis Clublast week.The children were driven to the club tostart their weekly tennis sessions on Thurs-day 1 August thanks to Phumza Nojekwa(sports co-ordinator) andEasyNofemela (as-sistant driver).The children aged six to 10 years old tookpart in warm-up games, ball skills, as wellas learning some technique and tennisgames with coaches Elly Shearman andFrancoisDuPreez, and juniorvolunteerSer-gio.This is the start of a programme atMilner-ton Tennis Club to work with the Amy BiehlFoundation to provide children with the op-portunity to learn about and enjoy the sportof tennis. Tennis is often predominantly of-fered to those fortunate enough to come fromhigher socio-economic backgrounds. Thesport offers players an easy way to keep fit,learn co-ordination, discipline as well as tosocialise. It is a sport that can be played for

life. these officers (were) invited for a day of rest,

relaxation andpampering at theMangwana-ni Spa (in Zevenwacht, Kuils River),” thestatement said.JP Smith, mayoral committeemember for

safety and security also handed over a smalldonation to each family “as a gesture of thecity’s gratitude to their loved ones for theirloyal service and dedication”, the reportsaid.They enjoyed some de-stressing activities

for three hours last Friday. Smith addressedthe families at around 08:00, before theirtreatments, and the donations were handedover afterwards, the city said.

“Aerobics is basically something I learnedin Malmesbury prison.”

This is not something one hears everyday. But Lionel Moloi (28) isn’t the kind ofperson one meets every day either.

Lionel used to be a member of the 26sgang. In his lifetime, he had been incarcer-ated “six or seven times”, he tells Tyger-Burger, the last of which was a stint start-ing in 2006.

He was released last year and startedbuilding on his dream of teaching peopleto do aerobics and physical exercises. Butthat’s not all. Lionel is also the coach of thelocal women’s soccer team.

He tells TygerBurger his inspiring andcompelling tale.

“When I was incarcerated at Pollsmoorprison, I already had the idea of startingthese classes. But then they transferredme to Malmesbury prison.

“There I met lots of positive people whospoke positive things to me. I can give allcredit to the Lord,” he says. “Then I re-ceived a letter from my wife saying thatshe was also saved (born-again) and thatencouraged me.

“As a member of the 26s gang, it wastough to make any decision to quit. Theywould try to convince me there’s only away in, but no way out (of prison). It wasvery challenging,” he says.

“Therewere guyswanting to beatmeup.They treatedme badly because I hadmadethe decision to change my life.”

Lionel tells of how he equipped himselfwith the necessary skills that he so fer-vently wished to share with others. Be-sides aerobics and physical training, he al-so learnt his soccer skills. He attended theResponsible Individual course in prison.

“It had ahugepositive impact onmy life.I took it from there, and I came out withmywonderful Jesus.Everythingdidn’t au-tomatically work out. But Hemade a plan,and still provides for me every day. He

looks after me, my child and my wife.”Lionel says that was when the aerobics

class became a reality.“I decided to approach the guys at themulti-

purpose centre because I saw a lot of peoplein the community getting sick.

“They were watching 7de Laan, eating, sit-ting and not doing any exercise. There arenow more than 40 members in the two ses-sions I do, but every day more and more peo-ple come. From the response I’m getting,they’ve wanted this for a long time.”

The eldest member is 62, says Lionel.“They had Zumba classes before... the chal-

lenge is that people living in our areas are notso into exercise. They need someone to moti-vate and encourage them...”

But now it’s a different story altogether, hesays. “To me it’s more than just an aerobicsclass. I have something to teach the young-sters. After every class I sharemy experiencewith them. I hope it will make a difference.No, I know it will,” he says.

Die Wesbankers het in hordes opgedaag omte kom deelneem aan die pret op Vrouedagop die plaaslike sportvelde.Daar is gerieldansdeur ’n groepiekinders,

en kort daarnahet die volwassenes ook inge-val op die maat van “Ek wil jou lekker vry”,wat oor die luidsprekers die tempo aangegeehet. Daar is voete gestamp, boude geswaai,en vlae rondgeswaai.Die plaaslike tak van die DA, onder die

raadslid, Cynthia Claasen, het die dagmoontlik gemaak, maar haar verteenwoor-diger, Ricardo le Roux, het die verrigtingein haar afwesigheid waargeneem.Sy boodskap aan die vroue was baie tref-

fend. “Ons vroue moet by hulself begin. As

hulle sterk is, is die gemeenskap sterk. Hul-le moet die leiding neem,” het hy gesê.“Ons mense het so ’n bietjie sports ook no-

dig,” het hy gesê.“Dis net jammer dat van die ander organi-

sasies vroegoggend ons mense ‘onderskep’het en op hul busse gelaai het,” het hy lag-gend gesê, maar bygevoeg dat hulle daremlaterweer ’n draai bydie sportvelde soukommaak.Daar is ook ’n netbaltoernooi gehou en die

kinderskondaamspringop ’n springkasteel.Met TygerBurger se fotonemery was die

groepie kinders so opgewonde en wild besigop die kasteel, dat hulle vir ’n rukkie moesafklim sodat die speeldingweer kon opblaas.Trofees is uitgedeel aan die beste netbal-

With a voice filled with soul and lyr-ics that elicit a rollercoaster of emo-tions, singer/songwriter, Li-Ann

Cummins, or Ann Jangle, as she’s knownon stage, is one of Cape Town’s folk bluesgems.The songstress paid her dues singing

back-up for SouthAfricanblues legend, PietBotha and performing with Akkedis fromtime to time, before starting her ownproject.“That’s kindawhere the journey started,”

Ann says. In 2011, she started playing withbassist, Nozomé Brink.At first Ann and Nozomé would just get

together to play two-piece, and before toolong they were joined by guitarist, GerhardCoetzee and drummer, Matthew Raven,Ann explains.

Music styleAnn says it’s tricky to describe the

group’s sound. “We touch on somanydiffer-ent styles,” she says.“We’ve got an old, 40s-invoking, hip-shak-

ing, bit of a rockabilly twist, type of style,and then we also do a lot of more dramatic,more folksy, hectic vocals,” she says, add-ing: “It’s very hard to explain.”Ann Jangle has recorded a song for the

Blues Breakers album, a project by VH Mu-sic and Publishing, which sees some ofSouth Africa’s biggest blues artists payingtribute to the history of blues.“It’s a huge privilege to play on the same

album as Albert Frost and Black Cat Bonesand Piet Botha,” Ann says.“These are the guys I used to just stand

at the bottom of the stage and drool over,you know what I mean,” she says.The album is set to be launched in Cape

Town in September, after it’s official launchat the Fellowship of Rock and Roll festival

in Mozambique.Ann Jangle is also busy working on a sec-

ond album and plans to shoot the groupsmusic video soon.Their debut album,Acoustic Archive, was

released in 2012 and was the CD that soldthe most copies at Table Mountain BluesSummit 2012. They are hoping to release thenew album by the end of this year.

VideoThe group is about to shoot themusic vid-

eo for the single, “Moral Code”. Ann ex-plains that the song tells the story of a wom-an accused of cheating by her lover, whenhe in fact has a guilty conscience. She saysthe message of the song is that “all of us areactually the same”.“Everyone makes mistakes, we all do the

wrong thing sometimes,” Ann says. Themusic video will be about a scorned womanwho gets her revenge. “It’s going to be in anold-school setting with a desert cowboyscene,” Ann elaborates.“At the moment it’s pretty much writing

and just performing everywhere asmuch aswe can,” Ann says of what the group is cur-rently doing.The Ann Jangle Band also recently

The next competition on the horizon will be Muay Thai as the club teachesand trains in all aspects and styles of martial arts.
