Die inwoners rondom ’nparkie in SilverOaks, Kuilsrivier is raadop. Die oor-saak? Hardnekkige, telende molle en

’n skynbaar onsimpatieke munisipaliteit.Suzette Puren vertel: “Ons het al hoeveel

keer gekla oor die molle wat die parkie ver-nietig. Die ligte by die parkie werk ook nie.Niemand kom terug na my toe nie. Dieraadslid, Bert van Dalen, kom ook nie uitnie, hy het eerder weer ’n e-pos aan my ge-stuur.”Suzette sê die molle het al dié parkie in

Kersiestraat so oorgeneem dat die kindersnie daar kan speel, en die hondenie daar kanhardloop nie, want dis vol slaggate.“Jy loop nog so, dan trap jy in ’n gat. En

van die vyf ligte is daar slegs een wat werk.Die speelgoed wat daar is, is jare gelede ge-verf,” sê sy.

ders, kleintjies, kaalvoet daarnatoe om tespeel, dan trap hulle in dié stukkende glas,”sê hy.“Wat as ek my enkel breek? Wie gaan die

mediese koste betaal? En wat van die sanden stof? ’n Mens kan nie jou motor was nie,dan raak alles vol stof,” sê hy.“Die parkie word nie gereeld onderhou

A group of Eerste River kids got to rubshoulders with a group of rugby legendswhen Kleinvlei’s sports grounds turned into a learning field – literally.Great names of rugby such as IanMacIn-

tosh, Dale Santon, Norman Jordaan, PieterMuller, Pieter de Jager, Quinton Daniels,McNealHendricks andAubreyNobel visit-ed Eerste River on Saturday.The group hosted a rugby clinic from

08:30 to 11:30 to impart their knowledge toabout 100 children from the area who wereinvited to take part in the SA Rugby Leg-ends Coaching Clinic and so got to meeteach of these heroes.The event was jointly initiated by Net-

care Kuils River Hospital (NKRH) as asponsor, and former Springbok player,Breyton Paulse. The clinic was a follow-onof their other successful rugby event, onwhich they collaborated a few months ago.“In a nutshell, this all started earlier in

the year where the principal at Melton Pri-mary School contacted me asking if we,NetcareKRH, could get involved in the firstof what is hoped to become an annual Sev-ens rugby tournament,” said Karen Eagle,spokeswoman of NKRH.Karen said 15 schools participated in

June, and “after seeing the enthusiasm ofthese impoverished youngsters, Breytonand I decided to do something else to fur-ther the rugby potential of these ‘stars’ ofthe event,” she said.She explains that the hospital then col-

Philida Paulse kon nie rus kry oor haarmeisiekind, Kayla, wat simptome van diéalgemene siektes getoon het, maar net niewou gesond word nie.

En dit was ook goed, sê sy, want toe hulleby die agtste dokter kom, is Kayla onmid-dellik in die hospitaal opgeneem – met ’nvirus op haar hartklep, bekdn as endokar-ditis.

Indien dié virus, wat inflammasie vandie hartkleppe veroorsaak, in sy aansteek-like vorm onbehandeld bly, dood dit sygasheer.

“Kayla het erge koors gehad, maar is el-ke keer vir verkoue of griep behandel. Eendokter het selfs gesê dis eksamenstres,” sêPhilida oor die simptome wat maar net niehaar matriekkind wou verlaat nie.

“Eers was sy warm, dan koud, dan weerwarm; dan soek sy vir my. Maar ek het niegeweet waarheen om my kind meer te vatnie, want oral waar ons kom is gesê dis nieernstig nie. Toe vat ek haar na ’n internis,dr.Brenda Ford, by N1-Stad se hospitaal inGoodwood,” vertel Philida.

“Die dokter was volbespreek, maar hetingestem om Kayla te sien. Sy het Kaylaondersoek en dadelik in die hospitaal laatopneem. Daar het hulle bloed getrek en al-lerhande toetste gedoen. Ford het eers ge-dog dis dalk meningitis. Sy het my belowesy sal die oorsaak van Kayla se siekte vas-stel. Dit was naderhand so erg dat Kaylanie haar arms en bene kon beweeg nie.Hulle het ’n breinskandering gedoen –niks. Toe moes Kayla vir vier dae bloedkry. Dis toe dat hulle ontdek dat daar ’nvirus op haar hartklep is, wat die klep albaie skade berokken het,” vertel Philida.

“Ons het net gebid, en almal gevra omsaam te bid. Mense wat ons nie eens kennie, het ook saamgebid.”

Philida sê Kayla, wat toe al baie siekwas, het by die dood omgedraai. Sy was virvier weke in die hospitaal, en is ná verderetoetse en behandeling vir die endokardi-tis, ontslaan. Hulle het in een stadium ge-vrees dat Kayla nie haar matriekafskeidgaan haal nie, maar sy het wel verledeDonderdag dié geleentheid bygewoon, ensien nou net uit na haar eindeksamen.

Dié skrander leerder van die HoërskoolHottentots-Holland is reeds voorlopig bydie Universiteit Stellenbosch aanvaar om

rekeningkunde te kom studeer. “Sy is baie ge-fokus,” sê haar ma, “en sy sien baie uit na dieeindeksamen.”

Donovan Ramedies het ekstra wiskunde-klasse aan Kayla en ander gebied oor die Sep-tember-eksamen. Donovan, ook ’n pastoor,was een van die mense wat die hardste gebidhet vir Kayla se herstel. “Sy is ’n ware ant-woord op gebed. Ek het Kayla Paulse op 9 Ju-lie ontmoet toe sy wiskunde-ondersteunings-klasse oor die vakansie bygewoon het.

“Sy is ’n opgewekte jong meisie wat grootentoesiasme tydens die klasse gewys het, entoe vind ek later uit sy is eintlik baie, baiesiek. Toe ons van haar hoor, het ons begin biddat God ’n wonderwerk moes doen, en verledeDonderdag was ek bevoorreg om haar by haarhuis te sien voordat sy na haar matriekaf-skeid toe is,” vertel Donovan.

“Sy is ’n voorbeeld van die uitkoms van ge-bed. Sy het wonderbaarlik herstel nadat dok-ters ’n opehart-operasie wou doen. Ek is aan-gemoedig deur net na haar te kyk.”

Kayla self kan nie wag om matriek klaar tekry nie, sê sy. “Dit voel asof niks gebeur hetnie. Dis asof dit alles (die siekte) net ’n naredroom was. Behalwe dat daar vier weke uitmy lewe is wat weg is, is alles nog dieselfde.”

Kayla en haar ouers het die Eersterivier-ge-meenskap, asook dié wat haar in hul gebedegehou het, bedank.

Hierdie is ’n verskriklike oulike storiewatdie afgelope langnaweek met ons gebeurhet.Ekenmyman, SuleenenNickHamman,

en ’n groep van ons vriende – Marius enBernie van der Spuy en JC en AndriettePretorius – het die afgelope langnaweekgaan kamp by Kamgab langs die Oranjeri-vier.Kamgab kan net bereik word met vier-

trekvoertuie en is naby Vioolsdrift netvoor die Namibiese grens.Maandag-laatmiddag kom sit daar skie-

lik ’nwedvlugduif op een van die voertuie.Die kinders,Melt, Jana enKarla van der

Spuy, gooi toe dadelik broodkrummels opdie grond en sit ’n bakkie water neer. Dieduif het dadelik af gevlieg en kom eet. Dieduif was baie mak en ons kon sien dit isverskriklik moeg. Ná die duif geëet het,het dit tussen ons begin rondloop en laterop een van die daktente gaan sit.Toe die son beginwater trek, het die duif

onder een van die afdakkies van die dak-tent ingekruip en die hele nag daar ge-slaap.Die volgende oggend was die duif nog

steeds daar. Die kinders het weer vir dieduif kos en water gegee. Die duif het pro-beer vlieg en het ’n paar keer gesirkel bo-kant ons kampplek, maar toe weer tussenons kom sit. Daar het die duif gebly tot onsgereed was om te ry.Dis net toe dat ons besluit: hierdie duif

gaan ons nie aan sy eie genade oorlaat nie!Ons het die duif in ’n boks gelaai, op dieagterste sitplek van die Land Rover gesit

en so het die duif saammet my enmymangery tot in Springbok.Daar het ons begin navraag doen en ’n

duiweboer opgespoor, maar hy kon onsnie veel help nie. Toe moes die duif maaral die pad Kaap toe waar ons dan sy eie-naar sou gaan soek.Dinsdagaand toe ons by die huis kom,

het ek die duif in een van my papagaai sespaarhokke gesit en kos gegee. Die duifwas dadelik tuis!Woensdagoggend begin ek toe my soek-

tog na die eienaar. Volgens die nommer opdie duif se ring om sy poot, het ek by dieringmeester in Noordwes uitgekom.Maarongelukkig was die duif nie van hullestreek nie. Sy het my verwys na die ring-meester in Bloemfontein.Toe ek die letters en nommer vir die

ringmeester in Bloemfontein sê, toe sê sydadelik dis ’n duif van die Kaap. Ek kondit nie glo nie. Ons het wraggies die duifhuis toe gebring!Ek skakel toe dadelik vir Willie van den

Berg, die ringmeester van die Kaapsestreek. Hy kon my verseker dat die duifvan die Kaap is.Vanmiddag (26 September) het Willie

die duif by my kom haal en hy gaan noudie eienaar opspoor volgens die nommer.Sodra hy die eienaar opgespoor het, sal hymy al die besonderhede laat kry sodat onsal die mooi foto’s wat ons van die duif ge-neem het, vir die eienaar kan laat kry.Willie was so dankbaar oor ons helde-

daad en sêdismindatmense soveelmoeitedoen met wedvlugduiwe wat verdwaal ofbeseer word. Ek en Nick is net bly ons kondie arme diertjie help.

The staff at Step Ahead Educare in KuilsRiver could not have known what a pro-found effect a recent visit would have ontheir lives.The school’s teachers paid a visit to Sive-

V Wie is Eldridge Jason?Wie Eldridge Jason is, is ’n vraag wat my

ook jare lank laat kopkrap het. Maar ek isgebore en getoë aan die Weskus – Paternos-ter, om spesifiek te wees. Ná skool het ekjoernalistiek aan die destydse Pentech gaanswot en werk deesdae as ’n joernalis by ’nKaapse dagblad. Ek’s getroud met ’n Afri-kaans-onnie, Winifred, en ons het ’n drie-ja-rige seuntjie, Danté.

V Was dié jeugboek se skryf vir jou ’n“eureka”-ervaring?Gerook was ’n idee wat ses jaar lank in

my kop gebroei het. Ek het eendag vir myvrou daarvan gesê en toe vra sy: “Waarvoorwag jy?” Dit was die begin van ’n asemro-wende tog wat my nou nog hoendervleisgee. Ek is ’n skaamtelose dromer en dis mygróót droom dat Gerook die begin van velesal wees.

V Wat was die slegste oomblik van diehele proses?Ek sal dit nie dalk as ’n slegte oomblik

beskryf nie, maar ek hou van die natuurli-ke proses van skryf, waar die karakters in’n mens se kop “praat”. Maar dit was baie-male moeilik om saans te slaap, want diekarakters wou nóú “praat” – hulle wou nogvertel oor wat hulle volgende wou doen.Maardít gebeur sekermaaras jy fiksie vryeteuels gee.

V Waaroor is jydiegelukkigstemetdiéboek?Vir die eerste keer is daar ’n boek (só voel

ék, heel beskeie) wat deur middel van sto-

V Jy kry goeie terugvoering oor dié jeug-debuut. Wat was jou verwagting?Ek moet sê dat ek aangenaam verras was

oor Gerook se ontvangs. Dis ’n lekker gevoelom te hoor hoemense dit as “een van die bestejeugboeke in ’n baie lang tyd” beskryf.

V Kan ons uitsien na ’n debuut in ’n an-der genre?Vir nou sal ek graag eers op jeugliteratuur

wil fokus.Ek sal graagnog ’nboek saamDantéwil skryf, enwag kriewelend vir homomouer

te raak, te begin praat en te vertel van watdie duiweltjies so in sy oë laat skitter.

V Gaan Eldridge sy joernalis-skoeneverruil vir ’n paar skrywers-toks?As skrywer droom ek van kindsbeen van

my eie huisie by die see waar ek kan skryf,skryf . . .Maar joernalistiekbiedmy tans dieplatform waar ek in daaglikse kontak metmense en hul besonderse stories kom. Dítmotiveer en inspireer my, en dit sal vir mymoeilik wees om die veld koebaai te roep.

Very few learners would sacrifice their holi-day time to learn – least of all if the learningwas about mathematics.Well, a groupof 142 learners – anewrecord

for the additional maths classes offered over

the September holidays by a local EersteRiver church – did just that.“Since the notice placed in last week’s (18

September) TygerBurger, we had more than100 learners for the first time. In fact, we had142,” said Donovan Ramedies.He is anassignment officer atHelderkruin

Primary School (the host venue), as well as

a leader in the Nazarene church, who organ-ised this second annual mathematics sup-port class.The learners who came out were wide-

spread. Theywere fromschools like Simon’sTown High, Steenberg High, LengtegeurHigh, Portlands High, Kleinvlei High, Mali-bu High, Blackheath High, Rhodes High,Bishop Lavis High, Hottentots HollandHigh, Bellville, Northpine and Kuils RiverTechnical High and Wesbank High, amongothers, Donovan said.There were learners from more than 35

schools and two colleges, he said.“Please pray for all these learners as we

expect great results from all of them, espe-cially our Grade 12 learners.“I’m sure they will make us proud,” he

The learner licence classes at the DawnCare centre in Sarepta are up and running,with anumber of successes and someobsta-cles.“Manyare interestedbutnot all complete

the classes or fulfil their appointments towrite,” said Dawn Roode, community lead-er at the centre.“Our goal with these classes is to empow-

er people – especially the women, so theycan become independent.“Many times we find that there are cars

at home but you can’t drive so you alwaysneed to ask others to transport you. Someof us are so spoilt because our spouse al-waysdrives. Thenonedayweget awake-upcall when that spouse dies and the car isstanding idle in the driveway or garage,”she says.Roode also says the classes are crucial to

those seeking employment.“Some jobs that you want to apply for re-

quires a driver’s licence, so why wait? Theopportunity is on your doorstep.Wewill gothe extra mile with you.“So far we’e had three people who passed

their learner’s licence test and this moti-vates us to continue,” she said.The classes are held for free on Tuesdays

from 09:00 for unemployed people, and onThursdays from 18:30 for employed peopleand students. Private tuition can be ar-

ranged on request. Subsequent driving les-sons are also available at a minimal afford-able fee, she said.Roode added said the only criteria for at-

tending these classes was to have a learn-er’s licence appointment.“The reason for this is that toomanypeo-

ple attend the classes, but don’t make an ef-fort tomake their appointment. Then thereare otherswhomustwait because the class-es are too full.”Tomake an appointment, candidates can

go to any traffic department with their ID,R68 and two ID photos.“At Kuils River’s traffic department you

will only get your appointment to writeyour test in December. You will be assistedat the traffic department to fill in the formif you need help and you will go for an eyetest,” Dawn said.“It is very important to remember that if

you are wearing glasses, to please takethem with you.“If your eyes are weak, get glasses before

you go to make the appointment,” she ad-vised.The programme is runwithout any fund-

ing or remuneration for petrol, venue, tele-phone calls or time, Dawn said.“It is a lovegestureandwewant to ensure

people are empowered, so peoplemust grabthe opportunity.”

As I was thinking about thisissue I could not help buthighlight the fact that poorservice delivery is becoming anational plague in some of ourcommunities and how thecitizens who are not receivingservice delivery are being moreviolent and vocal. They arerunning in the streets and actout barbaric scenes on thestate’s property by destroyingmunicipal buildings andequipment.

The initial blame is not thestate’s property but the publicservants employed or voted into ensure service delivery.

To our honourable statepresident who is the custodianand monarch of service deliv-ery for the people of SouthAfrica may I propose that atthe beginning of every year hedeclares that we have a ServiceDelivery Commitment Weekwhereby parliament and allstate department staff advertisethemselves and their roles inservice delivery and pledgecommitment and dedication todeliver service.

In that week the public andstate officials can open chan-nels and find each other byintroducing who in eachrespective municipality isresponsible for respectiveservice delivery.

This will lead to a bettermore dedicated service deliveryto an enlightened public whodemands that service.

Vanjaar het TygerBurger vir Bok Radio,wat vanuit Brackenfell uitsaai, uitgedaagom aan die stap deel te neem en ook metdié geldinsamelingspoging te help. BokRadio het dié vriendelike uitdaging vandie “pen pushers” aanvaar.

Hulle het terselfdertyd ander sake-on-dernemings in Brackenfell uitgedaag omtot die fonds by te dra en/of saam te stapen nie net meer mense betrokke te krynie, maar ook meer geld in te samel.

Die sanger Dillon Lerm maak hom reg omdie Kaap te vermaak wanneer hy op Woens-dag 9 Oktober saam met David Fourie by dieKraaifontein-stadsaal optree.

Dillon het verlede jaar in harte reg oor dieland gekruip met sy eerste enkelsnit, Em-ma’s Song, wat hom gehelp het om in 2012as die beste nuwe kunstenaar by die Wes-Kaapse bokkie-toekennings van Bok Radioaangewys te word.

Die sanger het onlangs ’n deel van sy nuwemusiekvideo vir Fairytale Lifestyle in Dur-banville geskiet enTygerBurger het gaan in-loer om te hoor waarmee Dillon nou besigis.

Sedert TygerBurger vroeër vanjaar methom gepraat het, sê Dillon, is hy besig omnuwe liedjies te skryf.

Hy het al vyf nuwe liedjies vrygestel watin die proses is om na radio-stasies gestuurte word.

“Ek toer verskriklik baie,” sê Dillon.“Ek kan nie beskyf hoe baie ek dit geniet

nie,” sê hy met ’n groot glimlag. “Ek is vol-tyds met vakansie,” voeg hy by.

Hy wys ook daarop dat hy wel sy tyd bydie huis geniet en dat die konstante getoerhelp dat hy sy mense by die huis bietjie meerwaardeer.

Dillon sê die dinamika van sy optredes isbesig om te verander.

“Ditborderlineop ’n tipe van ’n teaterstuk,omdat ek baie meer interaktief begin raakmet die mense en omdat ek grappies maak,”verduidelik hy.

“Ek is ook nou besig om die akoestieke ki-taar in te bring,” sê Dillon.

Hy sê seremoniemeesterwerk by feestehou hom tans nogal redelik besig.

Dillon sê dis maklik om kunstenaars te

boek en ’n fees te reël, maar die belangrikeaspek is “om dit alles in die middel byme-kaar te trek”.

Hy sê dis ’n seremoniemeester se werk omalles reg te laat vloei en omdat hy heel eer-stens ’n sakeman was, verstaan hy die sake-sy van ’n fees of ’n skou.

“Ek kom uit die onthaalbedryf,” sê Dillon,wat saam met sy familie ’n hotel in Herma-nus, Misty Waves, bestuur.

“Ek bring sonskyn daar waar ek kom,”grap hy.

Dillon sal beslis ook sonskyn bring na syoptrede saam met David Fourie. Dit sal dieeerste keer wees dat David liedjies van synuwe album Kaap toe bring.

Die Hoërskool D.F. Malan het onder die top-tien skole klaargemaak in die eindrondevan die Spur se 2013-hoërskole-bergfietslig-a-kompetisie, wat die vorige naweek in Ma-galiesburg gehou is.

Sowat 300 van Suid-Afrika, Namibië enZimbabwe se voorste bergfietsryers van 60skole het by die Hoërskool Bekker aan dienasionale eindronde deelgeneem.

D.F. Malan se deelnemers het puik pres-teer. Charl de Lange het ’n 14de plek behaalin die seunsafdeling vir sub-juniors, TimonLouw ’n 20ste posisie in die meisie-afdelingvir sub-juniors en Manie Lubbe ’n vyfdeplek in die jeug-mansafdeling vir 16-jarigesmet ’n tyd van 00:49:45 oor vier rondtes.Emil van Eck het 21ste geëindig in die juni-or seunsafdeling.

Die bergfietsspan van Paul Roos Gimna-sium op Stellenbosch het die seunsafdelingvir ’n tweede agtereenvolgende jaar gewen.

Die liga word op dieselfde rondtestelselas die Olimpiese bergfietskompetisies be-

dryf,met die klemdaaropomdit toeganklikvir almal te maak wanneer dit kom by diemoeilikheidsgraad en die roete se afstande.

Die 4,9 km-baan,wat spesifiekbydieBek-kerskool gebou is vir die eindronde, het nienet die jaers se tegniese vermoëns getoetsnie, maar ook hul krag, spoed, fiksheid enuithouvermoë.

Bergfietsry is hoofsaaklik ’n individuelesport, daarom fokus die puntestelsel opspanbetrokkenheid op skoolvlak en ver-diendie eerste 26 jaers in elkewedrenpunteop grond van waar hulle eindig.

Volgens Andrew Cronjé van Spur SteakRanches is hulle trots om deel van ’n berg-fiets-ontwikkelingsprogram op skoolvlakte wees. “Ons is baie opgewonde oor hoe dieliga ontwikkel het – wat getalle sowel astransformasie betref.

Sedert die eerste seisoen in 2009, wat 900ryers in 20 wedrenne gehad het, het die ligagegroei tot meer as 7 500 vanjaar,” het hybygevoeg.

The team to beat: Fairmont High School u-19 girls’ soccer team is one of the mostconsistent teams on the school’s soccer scene. It was anything but a “walk in the park”,for cyclist, Maroesjka Matthee, but nowback home, she has made some major im-

provement from before she left for Americaa few months ago.

Marjoeska (24) from Bellville is South Af-rica’s golden girl of track cycling.

Shewent toPennsylvaniawhich is famousfor what is called T-Town, the world’s bestcycling track. The Lehigh County Velo-drome in Trexlertown annually attractssome of the best cyclists in the world.

Learning curve“I learned so much there, the style of cy-

cling is so much faster and more aggressive.I often found myself in a bundle of between15 and 25 cyclists and ended at the back ofthe field in my first few races.

“I adapted quicklyand learned to copewith the style. The experience made me a

better cyclist and I am motivated to traineven harder,” she reflected.

After her first few races she became morecomfortable and soon found herself on nu-merous podium finishes.Maroesjka hasbeen selected to compete at the UCI TrackCycling World Cup from 1 to 3 November inManchester.

Competition“T-town is exactly what I needed. It is

much stiffer competition than here at home.Manchester is going to be a few notchestougher, but I am excited to compete againstthe best in the world.

“I am really chuffed with what I achievedin a short space of time. My goal is to repre-sent my country at the 2016 and 2020 Olym-pic Games. But in order for that to happen,I am going to need the help of sponsors.
