Laerskoolleerders in Wesbank is van-deesweek op ’n ietwat harde manierdeur voormalige gevangenes daaraan

Die jeug is deurgaans aange-moedig om die regte besluite te neem en niedieselfde pad as die drie voormalige bendele-de te volg nie.Die drie het in boeie om die arms en bene,

Somali shopkeepers in Wes-bank say they fear for their li-ves, and have nowhere to turn

to for help.Two Somali nationals TygerBur-

ger spoke to this week said they areharassed and often robbed in thearea.

Despite their fears, some Somalishave been praised by community le-aders as good and trustworthy busi-nessmen.

Pastor Cornelius Pieters, leaderof the New Hope Ministries in Wes-bank, this week said Somali busi-nessmen support the community.

“One of the leaders I spoke to wentaround to several shops and mana-ged to raise funds for 20 studentswho took part in a local program-me,” Pieters said.

He said Somalis are always eagerto help. “They left their home-count-ry to try and make a living in SouthAfrica but also to support the com-munity. These are good people,” headded.

Pieters said often community

members go to shop-owners andbuy items on credit – items that arevery expensive anywhere else.

Constant attacks“They need more support from go-

vernment, I support them,” he said.According to one concerned resi-

dent, a shop-owner had to endurebeing attacked with pepper spray,while also suffering an injury to hisfinger following a gunshot.

Local resident Mninawe Dawetisaid there are two Somali shopkee-pers at the spaza shop near his hou-se and boys in the area would on adaily basis stand at the entrance tothe shop, blocking the passage forother customers.

“During the day young boys hangaround the shop. The entrance tothe shop is crowded and it’s not easyfor us as customers to go and buyitems.

“Those boys are the ones who cau-se the trouble,” Daweti alleged.

He said some of the boys often bre-ak into houses. His own premiseshad been broken into before.

“It has been like this for some ti-me and it is becoming worse,” he

said.Daweti said Somali shops are

even being broken into during theday.

“The Somali community cannotdo much. They should raise these is-sues.”

VictimisationA shopkeeper TygerBurger spoke

to did not want to elaborate on cri-minal activity out of fear of victimi-sation. He said if he speaks to themedia he might get into trouble.

“The boys create a lot of trouble,”he said in broken English.

He said Somalis often report rob-beries to the police, but police failto respond.

“We open a case, but the police donot come. We have lots of pro-blems,” the young shopkeeper said.

A fellow shopkeeper explainingby means of hand gestures how hewas once robbed at gunpoint.

“The robber asked for money andthen ran away,” he said.

“This is a problem for all of theshops,” he said.

The shop where he works hadbeen robbed twice so far.

Somali shops targeted

Two men died this week when theshack they were staying in caughtalight and burnt down.

Wilfred Solomons-Johannes,spokesperson for the City of CapeTown’s disaster risk management,said the two adult males were burntbeyond recognition.

The incident occurred on Sundayat about 05:00 at a house located inMinister Street in the Bardale infor-mal settlement near Blue Downs.

Five emergency vehicles were

dispatched to the scene from Mfule-ni, Lansdowne Road in Khayelitshaand the Milnerton fire stations.

“Upon arrival at the scene, thefirefighters established that neigh-bours attempted to extinguish thefire, however, the shack was en-gulfed in flames,” said Solomons-Jo-hannes.

“The emergency crews broughtthe fire under control and estab-lished that two adult males weretrapped and burnt beyond recogni-

tion,” he said.It is suspected that the fire was

caused by an open flame that hadnot been extinguished.

The Mfuleni police have openedan inquest docket to investigate theincident.

“The names of the two deceasedmen have not been made public andthe city’s disaster response teamswill notify their relatives and assistwith the funeral arrangements,”Solomons-Johannes said.

Residents in the Bardale Informal Set-tlement near Mfuleni have taken roadsafety into their own hands following

the death of a four-year-old girl recently.The residents used rubble to construct a

speed bump in the middle of TourmalineRoad, and dug a shallow trench furtheralong the same road.

As a result, motorists are forced to slowright down or drive over the sidewalk.Some, however, prefer turning around.

One of the residents TygerBurger spoketo this week said the trench across the roadwas dug several days after the death of afour-year-old child about a month ago.

The resident, who did want to be named,said the child, whose name she did notknow, died after being hit by a car. She saidthere had been several such incidents overthe last few months.

“Taxi’s, busses, trucks and cars, they allspeed down this road and that is why thecommunity did what they did,” the womensaid.

“The road is not safe,” another resident,who also want to remain anonymous, said.

The damage to the road and the plight ofthe community was also the topic of discus-sion at a subcouncil meeting on Friday 22August.

At the meeting, ward 108 councillorThemba Honono, whose ward includes theBardale informal settlement, informed fel-low councillors about the application hehad made for traffic calming measures, andthe rejection of this application due to exist-ing traffic circles on Tourmaline Road.

There are two traffic circles on the road.Honono said the application should be re-

considered.“The circles are located far apart,” Hono-

no said.Dennis de Villiers, a manager at the de-

partment of roads and transport, advisedHonono to follow the matter up with his col-leagues at the traffic and engineering de-partments.

“I will request that they re-assess the mat-ter and have a look at the position of the cir-cles and possibility of speed-bumps in-be-tween,” said Honono.

He indicated that a high school is locatedalong the road.

“I am under pressure from the communi-ty due to the action that has been taken sofar. They have gone to the extent of digginga hole in the road for traffic to calm down,”said Honono.

Bert van Dalen, councillor for ward 14

According to him a third child had beenknocked down in Albert Philander Roadnear a primary school recently. “Whatplans do they have for this road?” he asked.

Van Dalen met with Blackheath residentson Monday night and he was hoping to sup-ply them with answers regarding the mat-ter.

De Villiers told Van Dalen that the roadis a high traffic road and said that theymight have to look at the possibility of side-walks.

“That section of the road, however, is notin a good condition,” de Villiers said.

kom voor onder enige klas, ryk of arm,mans en vroue, bejaardes, volwassenesen kinders. Depressie ontsien ook niestand of beroep nie.Die hartseer is dat mense na ’n

depressielyer sal verwys as iemand wat’n soort mistroostige of “af-gevoel” heten homself moet regruk. Depressieverdwyn nie bloot wanner die depressie-lyer begin positief dink nie. So ’nverkeerde aanname maak dat die lyernet nog meer kan vereensaam enhulpeloos voel. Ons gebruik dikwels dieterm depressie in ons alledaagse gesprek-ke, byvoorbeeld: “My rugbyspan maakmy so depressief wanneer hulle so swakspeel.” Jy is eintlik net hartseer oorhulle swak spel en nie werklik depres-sief nie. Of: “Dit is regtig depressief omhier te werk.” Wat jy bedoel is dat jyverveeld of ongelukkig is by die werk.Daar is weliswaar ’n groot verskil om

ongelukkig te wees en depressie te hê.Jy kan byvoorbeeld ongelukkig wees oor’n nare ding wat met jou gebeur het,maar jy kan jouself troos en steeds inkontak met die wêreld bly.Wanneer jy egter depressief is, raak jy

geïsoleer van mense. Jy sny jouself vanjou eie emosies af, gee nie meer om nie,en jyself word jou grootste vyand.

Maar wat is depressie dan? Depressieis ’n intense neerslagtigheid (bedrukt-heid, teneergedruktheid) wat in die reëlgepaardgaan met gevoelens van ontoerei-kendheid, onsekerheid, pessimismeomtrent die toekoms, asook sosialeonttrekking en verlaagde psigomotorieseaktiwiteite (Psigologie Woordeboek vanLouw e.a.)Soms is dit nogal moeilik om depressie

te diagnoseer, omrede die simptomeverskil van een persoon na ’n ander.Daar is egter ’n verskeidenheid vansimptome wat redelik algemeen voor-kom. Ek noem kortliks enkele vanhierdie simptome.Een van die algemeenste simptome

van depressie is die effek op ’n mens sefisieke gestel. Depressielyers ondervind’n chroniese moegheid en gebrek aanenergie. Hiermee saam kom slaapver-steurings en verlies van aptyt. Selfshoofpyn en rugpyn kan ’n indikasie vandepressie wees.Depressie het ook ’n invloed op ’n

mens se motivering. Vir ’n depressielyervoel alles sonder hoop en uitsig. Dit kanvir hom voel sy lewe is sinloos. Dikwelstoon die lyer ’n belangeloosheid en ’napatiese houding teenoor sy persoonlikevoorkoms. Hy kan ook belangstellingverloor in sy gunsteling-aktiwiteite en-stokperdjies.Depressie kan jou ook op kognitiewe

The memory of the Buttskop level cross-ing crash victims will soon be immortal-ised when amemorial site for the ten chil-dren is erected at the Welmoed Cemetery.The issue regarding the memorial was

discussed at a recent subcouncil meetingwhich was held last Friday.Elaine Noble, administrative officer at

Subcouncil 21, informed the council of thesite at Welmoed which was made availa-ble, and of the decision by city’s parks tomaintain the memorial.She said a site in theWelmoedCemetery

extension had been identified in terms ofthemasterplan, but said that estimates re-garding the memorial have not yet beenfinalised.“City parks has committed tomaintain-

ing the memorial site within the contextof the cemetery, however, no funds areavailable from city parks for the construc-tion of the said memorial,” Noble said.

A suggestion for funds to bemade avail-able from the council’s ward allocationfunds was put forward in a report.This a suggestion has received support

from a majority within the council.Earlier this year it was proposed that a

wall of remembrance be erected at thecrash site.However, the decision was not support-

ed by the department of roads and trans-port, who stated that a future develop-ment by Eskomwas being planned for thesite.Ten children died in August 2010 when

a train slammed into the minibus-taxi inwhich they were being transported toschool.The crash spurred safety reforms in the

province.The children who died are Reece Smith

(7), Michaela de Koker (11), Nolan Feb-ruary (13), Jody Phillips (13), Cody Eras-mus (15), Nadine Marthinisen (16), Jean-Pierre Willeman (13), Jason Pedro (14),Jade Adams (10), and Lisle Augis (11).

Despite hardships, an aspiring topyoung chef now dreams of somedayopening his own restaurant.

Siphelele Mfini (24), originally from thesmall Karoo town ofWillowvale in theEast-ernCape, hashadmany setbacks, includingthe death of his 10-month-old baby, and be-ing unemployed.Despite these challenges, the young chef

is now planning to further his studies andobtain a diploma, and aims to one dayachieve his life dream of becoming a headchef.After completing hismatric in 2010, Siph-

elele travelled to Cape Town seeking em-ployment.

Learning to cook“I was unemployed for two years when a

lady at a soup kitchen in Mfuleni informedme about the training offered to drivers atthe Community Women Action (CWA).“I came to CWA for my driver’s licence

but found out about the chef’s trainingcourse that they offer. I told myself I wouldlike to learn to cook.”Siphelele participated in the basic chef’s

course at CWA for seven months.“After that I was employed at Saverite, a

local supermarket in Mfuleni, where Iworked in the bakery.”He worked there as a baker for nine

months.“Afterwards I worked at the CTICC for

two weeks before moving to Stanford,” theshy chef explained.

In Stanford, where he has been workingat a taste kitchen since 16 September lastyear, he fully enjoys his career.“I went from being a vegetable chef to be-

coming a pastry chef. I love working withdough. I like to playwith food,” he sayswitha smile.Asked about his plans for the future, he

says: “I want to go further. I want to get mydiploma and become a head chef and some-day open my own restaurant.”He hopes to set up his establishment in

CapeTown, aswell asWillowvalewhere hismother and wife still lives.

Committed“I enjoy what I am doing. I really, really

enjoy it,” he said.Ashley Mouton, Siphelele’s trainer at

CWA, described him as being very commit-ted.So farAshley has trained over 100 teenag-

ers, mostly from previously disadvantagedareas.“I saw he (Siphelele) is committed, al-

wayspunctual andwilling to learn,”Ashleysaid.He said he is very excited about his young

student’s prospects.“He will be going to Germany soon with

the owner of the restaurant where heworks, to work as a chef during the holidayseason there. I am very proud of him.”Asked about the support he got from

CWA, Siphelele replied: “I want to comeback someday and say thank you, thankyou, thank you, because without them Iwould not have been here. I did not havea future, but now I do.”

Residents of the Bardale Informal Settle-ment near Mfuleni were given an in-sight into criminal activities at a com-

munity Imbizo held in the area last week.Apart from the feedback on crime success-

es and criminal activity, residents were alsoafforded the opportunity to voice their con-cerns.

Among the concerns highlighted at themeeting in the community hall last Tuesdaynight were the continuous fighting amongstboys in the area, corruption, drug housesand theft of property which is often sold tolocal scrap-yards.

Some residents also complained about

robbery suspects that are arrested but re-leased days later. They also expressed theirunhappiness about the alleged lack of policevisibility and requested more police patrols.

Senior management at the Mfuleni policestation and the local community crime forumresponded to their concerns.

Speaking on behalf of the police, acting sta-tion commander Colonel Fred Jacobs encour-aged residents to report corruption.

“Everybody who has a complaint regardingcorruption should report it to the police.These cases can also be reported to the provin-cial inspectorate, or even the provincial de-partment of community safety,” Jacobs said.

He said corruption is something the policeregard very seriously.

“On the topic of drug houses – often it is dif-

ficult for us to police this because the hid-ing spots for drugs at these houses oftenchange.

“We have had operations where wewould send in an officer to buy drugs. Af-terwards we will go in and arrest the per-son, but when we search the premises fordrugs we end up finding nothing.

“Drugs are so small they can be hiddenanywhere,” said Jacobs.

Responding to the issue regarding illegalscrapyards and stolen property, Jacobssaid: “We can arrest people but we have 48hours to investigate the matter and thenhave to compile a docket that then goes tocourt.

“At court the decision is often taken torelease suspects on bail. This often comeswith conditions and one of those are thatthe suspect needs to report to the police sta-tion.

“If those suspects harass the complainanthe or she can be re-arrested.”

Jacobs also encouraged residents to re-port such incidents.

“For more serious crimes, detectives willoppose bail, but if the crime is not so seriousthey do not. When lives are threatenedthough, detectives will oppose bail.”

Referring to the apparent lack of policevisibility, Jacobs told residents that a policesector vehicle patrols the area on a daily ba-sis.

“You must understand that if the van thatpatrols the area is busy with a serious caselike a murder or business robbery, then thatvan can be stationary for some time,” hesaid.

He said the police are planning to increasethe number of personnel at the existing sat-ellite police station from two to 39 peopleover the next four years.

The Starstruck Voice Search is doingthings a little differently this year.The singing competition, running

since June, is whittling down the field to 15top contestants.Usually only the winner of the competi-

tion would get a chance to experience therecording process, but this year organisersCrazy World Production will give all top 15artists the opportunity to record a song.They will have to work for it though.“The idea is for the top 15 to raise the

funds to record, even if it is at a below-costprice,” said CrazyWorld spokesperson Bri-lynn van Rooyen.

“This will teach them to work hard forwhat they want to achieve and show uswhat they are made of in the real world,”he says.The local competition focuses on busi-

The City of Cape Town’s social developmentand early childhood development directora-te urges community organisations workingwith vulnerable groups to apply for rates re-bates as soon as possible.

Shelters working with homeless peopleand homes catering for the health of phys-ically or mentally challenged individualsand vulnerable groups need to register withthe city’s Homeless Agency Committee toapply for rebates related to rates, solid was-te, water and sanitation, and sewage by 31August.

In the past financial year, the city has helda number of information sessions to ensure

that interested organisations are informedof this opportunity as well as the relevantdocumentation needed and the process to befollowed to qualify for relief for the 2014/2015financial year.

“We’ve discovered in the past that someorganisations are unaware of the policy,while others have failed to qualify for reliefmerely because they did not have the neces-sary documentation, or were unsure of howto fill in the forms,” said city mayco memberfor social development and early childhooddevelopment, Suzette Little.

“So, last year we started the informationsessions to assist organisations who do ster-

ling work in our communities but who oftenstruggle to cover costs such as municipalbills because of funding constraints. In thisway, the city and NGOs can work togetherto make progress possible.”

In addition, the directorate is also plan-ning to amend the city’s current Rates Reba-te Policy to allow registered Early Child-hood Development (ECD) centres to applyfor rebates as well. The policy currently ex-cludes ECD centres.

Rates rebate deadline looms for NGOs

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille has re-cently bought her Casual Day sticker, whichis celebrated on Friday 5 September thisyear.

An advocate for people with disabilities,Zille bought her sticker at the recent open-ing of the Women’s Achievement Networkfor Disability at Artscape, saying peoplewith disabilities were marginalised and“hidden away” in many poor communities.

“The challenges around disability havenot yet been fully acknowledged,” she said.

Casual Day is South Africa’s most success-ful fund-raising project for people with disa-bilities – and the amount raised for last yearhas climbed to R24,8 million. Casual Day isthe flagship project of the National Councilfor Persons with Physical Disabilities inSouth Africa (NCPPDSA), which this yearcelebrates 75 years of service.

Casual Day proceeds ensure the sustaina-bility of more than 500 organisations servingthe needs of persons with disabilities allover South Africa.

Parents who default on their mainte-nance payments will find it harder toescape the law as new legislation

South Africa grow up without a mother ora father and that in tens of thousands ofthese cases, the absent parent does not hon-our their responsibility to pay child mainte-nance.“This adds to the downward cycle of pov-

erty as many of these children are then de-nied a proper education,” she said, addingthat this is the single biggest obstacleagainst these children successfully access-ing opportunities in life.“A little more than a month from launch-

ing the campaign, DAWN, along with theJustice department, National Credit Regula-tor, credit bureaus and the Department ofTrade and Industry, have managed to tight-en up on credit regulations that will seemaintenance defaulters are brought tobook,” she told TygerBurger.In consultation with the above entities,

new draft regulations for the credit industrywill ensure maintenance defaults stay on aperson’s credit record for five years, or until

a court rescinds a default judgement.Furthermore,maintenance paymentswill

be included in all affordability assessmentswhen applying for new loans, and clientswill be required to declare anymaintenancedefault judgements against them.

Twopronged approachRobinson says draft amendments were

published in the Government Gazette threeweeks ago for public input, after which theywill be promulgated.In addition, the Department of Justice has

drafted aBill to amend theMaintenanceAct,enabling credit bureaus to track downmain-tenance defaulterswho can’t be found by thecourts.This Bill will empower credit bureaus to

fortify maintenance judgements to affect de-faulters’ credit records.But the issue of efficiency at the mainte-

nance courts is also being addressed.“Womenoftenhave to take offwork, spend

travelling money and sit for hours at themaintenance courts while the perpetratorsmake a mockery of justice. This has to stopand we have launched an investigation intoall aspects to address the situation.”

PressureSeveralmaintenance courts in Cape Town

have already been visited by Robinson andDAWN has started to apply pressure for theJustice department to obtain more funding.“There simply are not enough courts, in-

Sue van der Linde’s dream to establishthe best children’s hospice in the coun-try was given a significant boost when

the Western Cape Provincial Governmentrecently made a house available for the or-ganisation.The announcement was made by Van der

Linde, founder of Iris House Children’s Hos-pice, at their annualWinterBall, a fund rais-ing event held at the Table Bay Hotel on Sat-urday night.“Now that we have a property, all funds

raised will go toward renovating this housein order to provide a loving and nurturingenvironment for a child who has reachedend of life,” she said.In its third year, this organisation pro-

vides free community based respite care andcaters for the special needs of children withlife threatening illness or life limiting condi-tions.

Caring for familiesThe organisation is currently caring for

122 families in the northern suburbs, Mfule-ni, Khayelitsha and Vrendenburg fromWelgelegen.WesternCapePremierHelen Zille, who at-

tended the ball along with Tim Harris, headof investment for theCity of CapeTown, saidthis move has been a long time coming asgovernment alone cannot solve the challeng-es faced.“As stipulated by law, we have to utilise

state property for the highest value, but nomonetary value could be placed on the socialvalue a hospice will bring to society,” shesaid.“As government we are thrilled with the

RenovationsThe house situated on the Stikland resi-

dential grounds will cost the organisationR400 per month, but will need a top-to-toerenovation, which includes water and elec-tricity upgrades.DaveStewart, from theFWDeKlerkFoun-

dation, pledged R20 000 from the foundation,as well as its unfaltering support.In a message to Iris House, former presi-

dent FW De Klerk stated that the stature of

any society is measured by the care it showsto the least fortunate.“If you, as a parent or grandparent of a

healthy child donate to this cause, perhapsyou should see it as a profound offering ofthanks giving,” De Klerk said.Madeleine Badenhorst, one parent who

benefits from the work Iris House does, saysthe support she has received from them hasbeen life changing.“They have therapists who understand

special needs children and this has liftedmuch of the burden off my shoulders. WhenI don’t have the funds or resources, they stepin at the drop of the hat,” she said.“They truly understand what it is like to

After almost a year away from the stage, Re-burn have emerged from their “writingcave” with a brand new album.

The indie rock outfit recently launchedtheir second album, Majestic, five years af-ter their debut-release, All Tied Up.

Frontman Scottie Moore says Majestic isvery different from their first album andthey have started changing some of theirolder songs to keep them in line with theirnew material.

“The sound is a bit more epic, I would sayit’s a bit more mature.” While there is stilla definite indie influence on the album,Scottie points out there are also splashes ofrock and an alternative style to be heard.

He points out that the band made a con-scious decision about a year ago that theywere going to make music that they listento and enjoy playing.

“We wanted to make music that we’rehappy playing, because you are going toplay these songs hundreds and thousands oftimes.”

The album was recorded by HeritageSound’s Brendyn “Rusti” Rossouwwho gui-tarist, Alex McFarlane, dubs “already a liv-ing legend in the industry”.

After working with Reburn on “No OtherPlace” and “Won’t Let Go”, their most suc-cessful single to date, Brendyn approached

them after a show and convinced the bandthe time was right to record a full album.

“Hewas actually the driving force behindthis album,” Scottie says. The band spent amonth in studio as opposed to the few shorthours previously, and Scottie says it was anice experience to be able to take their time.

Although the album’s name fits perfectlywith the image of a derelict aeroplane on thecover, the design was somewhat of a flukeor “divine intervention” as Alex calls it.

“We kind of just threw a whole bunch ofwords together and we just picked fromthere,” explains guitarist, CraigHermanus.

Alex says Reburn are busy finalising thedetails for a new music video, but there arealso two other video projects including doc-umentary and outdoor performance footage“in the wings”.

They have been confirmed to play Rock-ing the Daises in September and are plan-ning a tour around the festival before head-ing off on a coastal tour in November.

The plan is to take the album to as manyand venues as possible, no matter how bigor small. “We justwant to get in people’s fac-es,” Scottie says.

of 21, is showing a lot ofmaturity in thehexa-gon and is currently unbeaten after threeprofessional fights in the welterweight divi-sion.Some EFC critics reckon this is one of the

best fights they have ever seen.“I feel honoured that people think that.

Myself and Gordon fought hard that night,it was a bloody mess. We stood and tradedstrikes all fight. Gordon, likeme is awarriorand I respect the hard work he puts in.

Great team“My coaches Dean Johnson and Earl Ab-

rahams are great, always pushing me andkeeping me focused. To be a top fighter youneed a great coaching teamand that is exact-ly what I have,” said a satisfied Shaun.

Shaun learned the art of fighting underthe guidance of GrahamTurner. But, for thelast year Shaun decided to join Lethal EdgeMMA and Fitness Centre managed and

coached by Dean Johnson.“Shaun is really growing in leaps and

bounds, he is much more refined and youcan’t help feel excited for what the future

holds for him,” says Dean.“I see him as an accomplished fighter at

21, there aren’tmany that youngwith his ex-perience.”For now, it’s back in the gym training

hard.

In his own backyardShaun trains five days a week for about

four hours a day. Covering all the basics,with no two sessions are the same.“I will love to fight in my own back yard

at GrandWest on 6 November when it’s EFCAfrica 35. I don’t have any specific fighterin mind, that is up to the EFC, so I will waitand see what they offer. My target now is tojust keep fighting in the organisation,” saidShaun.According to Dean, they would love to

have one or twomore fights before consider-ing a title bout.“I think it will be wise to give Shaun one

of two more fights before we start focusingon a potential title fight. Seeing that he onlyhas three professional fights, it only makessense to give him one or two more fights.”Shaun beat Booto Guylain and Saxon De-

lafield in his previous outings.
