5 000 m en symikpunt is om die topdrie op die Spelete haal. Hy en sy gids, Duane Fortuin (ook vanKuilsrivier), vertrek op 21 Augustus na die Spele.Vir Jan is dit die hoogtepunt van sy lewe. “Kyk,

jy gaanniehoërkomasdieParalimpieseSpelenie,”het hy verlede week aan TygerBurger by die Coet-zenburg-atletiekbaan in Stellenbosch gesê. Jan enDuane het hier voorberei. Dit is gereël deur dieSuid-Afrikaanse Sportkonfederasie en OlimpieseSpele-komitee (Saskok).Dié nederige Jan is met gedeeltelike sig gebore,

maar het op 6-jarige ouderdom heeltemal blind ge-raak. Vanjaar is dit al 19 jaar wat die atletiekgoggahom beet het. Hy sê sy blindheid of agtergrond hethom nooit gekniehalter nie. “Dit gaan nie oor diefeit dat jy ’n plaaskind is en dit nie kan maak nie.Jy moet net glo jy ‘kan dit doen’.” Dié twee het op20 Junie vanjaar gehoor hulle kwalifiseer vir dieSA span. “Ek was heel opgewonde, ons het Kuilsri-vier rooi geverf!” het Jan gesê.“Myouers het ook dié gawe gehad,maar het nooit

geleenthede gekry nie. My broers en susters was ta-lentvol in padwedlope, maar weens huislike ver-pligtinge konhulle nie hul drome verwesenlik nie.”Duane, wat al agt jaar sy gids is, sê: “Alles het

goed uitgewerk, ons kan net die Here dank. Dit isdeel van God se plan dat ons Spele toe gaan.”

beampte van die Kuilsrivier-polisie, sê diearea waar die rowers toeslaan is moeilik omte polisieer, weens die ongemaklike liggingvan die voetpad. “Die booswigte skuil onderdie brug wanneer die polisie by die stasie sekant omry. Die burgemeester, Patricia de Lille, sedwelmbewusmakingsprogram Don’t Start,Be Smart is in Junie bekendgestel en ledevan die wyk 11-forum in Kuilsrivier het on-langs saam met De Lille aan die protesoptogteen dwelmmisbruik in Mitchell’s Plaindeelgeneem.

Hulle het teruggekeer Kalkfontein toe metéén doel en dit is om die burgemeester ookhier te kry sodat hulle die dwelm-bewusma-kingprogram kan laat werk.

Johannes Pula, voorsitter van die wyksfo-

rum, het gesê: “Hier is ’n toename in dwelm-misbruik enbendegeweld, as gevolg vanben-des wat baklei oor dwelmgebiede.” Pula sêhulle is in die proses om ’n brief aan die bur-gemeester se kantoor te rig vir De Lille sebesoek.

Hy sê hulle wil die jeug daarvan bewusmaakdat daarwel hulp vir hulle is, veral die-gene wat met dwelmverslawing worstel.“Onswil die boodskap bring dat ons nie gaantoelaat ons kinders word deur dwelms ver-nietig nie. Ons gaan ons gemeenskap terug-neemuit die kloue van dwelmmisbruik,” hetPula gesê.

Die bejaarde egpaar van Kuilsrivier watvroeër vanjaar gespog het met amper 70 jaarvan getroude lewe, het verlede week ooksaam-saam hulle verjaarsdae gevier. JanFourie (92) en Lulu (88), wat in Maart hul67ste huweliksjaar herdenk het, het verledeweek heerlik saam met hul familie feesge-vier.

OomJan of OomJanKonfyt soos die inwo-ners van De Eike in Kuilsrivier hom ken, isvolgens hul dogter Annie Erasmus al ’n be-kende agter die konfyttafel by plaaslike ba-saars. Oom Jan Konfyt was op sy dae ’n wel-tergewigbokskampioen in Marokko en hetook uitgedraf op die rugbyveld. “In ’n rugby-wedstryd teen die Nieu-Seelanders het hy synek beseer en in die hospitaal beland. Indaardie tyd het hy persoonlik vir generaalMontgomery ontmoet. Hy het ook saam metander soldate sigare by Winston Churchillgekry en het bladgeskudmet die vriendelikekoning George VI,” sê Annie.

Elridus Grobler van Blomtuin en Christi-aan Boonzaaier, oorspronklik van Boston, istwee van die deelnemers in die reeks wattans vertoon word. En albei geniet elke oom-blik daarvan.

’n Jaarkontrak en daarna moontlik ’n vol-tydse aanstelling byHuisgenoot is op die spelvir die wenner.

Om mense van verskillende agtergrondewat radikaal van hom verskil te ontmoet en

om moontlik erkenning te kry vir sy eieskryfstyl, is twee van die fasette van die pro-gramwaarnaElridus voor die afskopvandiereeks uitgesien het. Elridus, ’n boorling vanBellville, is ’n ekstrovert wat van die natuurhou. Regverdigheid is vir hom belangrik.“As ons nie opstaan daarvoor nie, word onsgedwing om soveel van ons eie waardes pryste gee.”

Christiaan Boonzaaier woon op die oom-blik in Tuine, maar hy het in Bellville groot-geword en by die Hoërskool D.F. Malan ge-matrikuleer.

In 2009 het hy met ’n honneursgraad injoernalistiek gegradueer, maar sedertdienkry hy nie werk in die veld nie.

“Saktyd is ’n kans – my kans – om vir diejoernalistiek tong uit te steek en te vra hoe-kom ek oorgesien is. Ek is ’n joernalis, endeur ‘Saktyd’ kan ek dit vir almal wys.”

If ever proof were needed that Es-kom has lost the plot, it came whentheir CEO Brian Dames recentlycalled on business for a radical re-organisation of working hours todeal with the problem of the eve-ning peak hour.

This is the time when the orangeor red appeals appear on TV screensasking people to switch off geysers,pool pumps and lights because theEskom grid is in trouble.

The surge in demand for electrici-ty is caused by people coming homefrom work and switching on elec-tric stoves, kettles and heaters.

In a nutshell, domestic consu-mers are using too much electricity

so Eskom wants to clobber busi-ness. How’s that for logic?

A drastic reorganisation of wor-king hours would hurt businessand have far-reaching effects on pu-blic transport and family life and itwouldn’t solve the problem either.

Does Eskom really think familieswill delay their evening meal to21:00 when Daddy comes home fromhis flexi-time job? What will happenis that the stove will have to go onagain and there will be two meal ti-mes – one for the kids and one forthe parents.

The peak demand period from17:00 to 21:00 is the big problemarea. That’s when the big power sta-

tions can’t produce enough electri-city to meet the demand so they usegas turbines, which use vastamounts of imported diesel. Theelectricity they produce is at leastseven times as expensive as thatproduced by the big power stations.

The second problem is that mostof the free electricity for consumersis used for cooking and lighting du-ring the evening peak. And thenthere is stolen electricity which isalso used mainly at this time.

So it is pretty obvious that thebest way to tackle the evening peakis to persuade people to use gas forcooking and heating. Free energyfor the poor should be provided in

the form of gas which isalso cleaner and a darnside safer than the explo-ding paraffin stoves thatcause the shack fires.Transporting and sellinggas will also create jobs.

There may be questi-ons about the supply ofLPG but it is a lot easierand quicker to importLPG than to build powerstations.

So it’s a “no brainer” except to theconfused people of Eskom. Theywant to solve what is essentially adomestic crisis by clobbering busi-ness and disorganising our lives! As

the Chamber of Commer-ce said recently, Eskomseems intent on solvingthe wrong problem.

What we need is a cam-paign to promote gas forcooking and heating. Weneed whistling kettlesfor our gas stoves. In-stead of wasting moneyon silly advertisementsabout not filling the ket-

tle, Eskom should promote whist-ling kettles for use on gas rings.

Gas is a permanent solution tothe problem of the evening peakhour.

Man’s best friend is sleep-ing snugly this winterthanks to the efforts ofAdele Lombaard of theDogbox Project and Cape-Gate shopping centre.

What started as a MandelaDay initiative to build dogkennels for dogs in underpri-vileged areas, has now gai-ned such momentum thatanother two events will beheld before the end of the ye-ar.

At the first project day afew weeks ago, 150 enthusi-astic volunteers divided inteams of two, met at CapeGa-te LifeStyle centre to trytheir hand at kennel buil-ding.

Although they aimed for67, it was two ticks and adog’s tail and 70 kennels we-re completed.

With the help of local ani-mal shelters these were dis-tributed into less fortunatecommunities.

The ready-made kennels

were supplied 95 % assem-bled and each team was res-ponsible to finish one ken-nel, adding finishing touchesand varnishing.

Every kennel received ablanket donated by Daro PetProducts and bag of dog fooddonated by Pet Food City.

“The need in animal shel-ters is growing by the day.Blankets, food and kennelsare always on the list. Of the-se three items, kennels areunfortunately the most ex-pensive and as funds are li-mited, the shelters are not al-ways able to purchasethem,” says Adele Lombaardwho co-ordinated the pro-ject.

Donations are always wel-come and for every R400 do-nated, a new kennel will bepurchased and another dogwill be able to sleep warmer.

The cold weather outside did ve-ry little to cool down the luckyfewmen who witnessed the regi-onal finals of the Miss South Af-rica at GrandWest Casino on Sa-turday.

The final was not open to the pu-blic, but there was nonetheless asmall audience.

The organisers received many

thousands of entries for the eventwhich will be held at the end of thisyear.

After an initial process of elimi-nation based on entry forms, thegirls come together in all the pro-vinces and take part in a more in-depth judging process.

Contestants were dressed up intheir most elegant evening wearand then the numberwas narroweddown from 34 to just 14.

gerBurger was invited on Saturdayto talk to some of the girls from thenorthern suburbs – of which therewere four. StaceyWebb andDanelledeWet are fromKuilsRiver,TarrynKim Cornelius from Parow and To-ni Smidt from Kraaifontein.

It was a good thing that I had avoice recorder, because it was vir-tually impossible to listen to thesongs of angels.

There were one or two momentswhen a contestant answered the

question only to be greeted by agawking silence.

I must confess to using the “um-and-ah” kickstart a couple of timesjust to reset my mind.

All four woke up early on Satur-daymorning to get ready for the bigday.Theyapplied theirmakeup, gotdressed and then did the othermys-terious things which take hoursand men simply cannot fathom.

Says Webb: “I’ve done it in 2010and made it to the Top 33, so I amquite comfortable and confident!”

De Wet says she also competed inMiss SA last year andmade the Top30.

“I had a blast,” she smiles. “There

were a few things missing though,but I am confident I got it sortedout.”

Apparently she had to tone herbody a little more, so after plenty ofhours in the gym she is ready to goone step further.

This is the first time that Smidthas competed in an event as big asthis, so she is a little nervous.

Cornelius feels very relaxed, be-cause she says that she has alreadyexceeded her expectations by get-ting this far. “I just take it as it co-mes,” she muses.

According to James Cairns, afreelance television director, theWestern Cape has plenty of potenti-al Miss SAs, which will be chosenon 9 December.

“This province’s girls comparevery favourably to the only otherprovincewe’ve done –KwaZulu-Na-tal. If I was a betting person then Iwould bet that there will be plentyof representatives from here.”

During the pageant, 12 girls willbe in the running for he crown.

Learn to make hanging baskets

An 11-hour trip from Kimberleyto visit her family’s church inDurbanville recently took a girl(14) and her grandmother over 60hours in which they had to spendtwo nights sleeping on their bus.

When Charlotte Southey fromKimberley and her granddaughter,Carla Bonthuys, who lives with hermissionary family in Senegal, set offon a bus trip fromKimberley toCapeTown, they had no idea that it wouldtake them that long in the extremeweather conditions.

They are missionaries of the Dur-banville Baptist Church and come tovisit every four years.

Although the trip from Kimberleyto Britstown had gone without inci-dent, they encountered light snow-fall between Victoria West andThree Sisters. A taxi had skidded onthe road and was blocking the route.

Passengers from the bus helped topush the taxi across the road, but bythen the snow was falling heavilyand the route ahead was blocked asvehicles were unable to proceed.

There was no alternative, but tospend the night in the bus. The fol-lowing morning, with the help of arake that was on the bus, the passen-gers helped to clear a path in thesnow.

The bus was painstakingly turnedand they headed carefully back toVictoria West, where they were ableto get food and use the bathroom fa-cilities at the garage.

Back on the road again, they onceagain found that the route aheadwasblocked. Another night on the roadin the bus was on the cards, in muchthe same place as they had been

stuck the previous night.Local farmers were out on the

roads with their equipment doingwhat they could to help the strandedmotorists.

At about midday on Sunday agrader finally came through fromBritstown and finally by 13:00 thetraffic slowly started to move!

Eventually on Sunday evening,the bus made its weary way intoCape Town – after an epic 60 hoursin transit!

“Despite all they had beenthrough, Charlotte and Carla’s expe-rience of how the little communityof 44 people on the bus had pulled to-getherunder the circumstances,wasa very positive one,” said Jill Peper,amember of the Durbanville BaptistChurch.

“Carla and her Gran have had anexperience of a lifetime, but the car-ing support of their fellow South Af-rican passengers will long stand outin their memories,” said Jill.

Some 2 000 women (and men!) fromacross Cape Town took part in a funrun last Thursday to celebrate Wo-men’s Day.

The Jive Women’s Day Challenge funrun, consisting of a 5 km and 10 km cate-gory, started at the Bellville Velodromefrom where walkers proceeded into sur-rounding streets.

Early morning, Alderman James Vos,De Grendel Subcouncil chairman firedthe starting gun to the race that was hos-ted by Edgemead Runners Club, underthe auspices of Western Province Athle-tics and Athletics South Africa. Fundsraised were presented to the Manenberg-based Saartjie Baartman Centre for Wo-men and Children.

At the event, Vos said no community,city, or country can really talk about im-proving the quality of life, if it does notshow respect for its women.

“Although it is heartening to note wehave made significant advances in pro-tecting women’s rights, and in promotingtheir rightful role in society, regrettablywe have not yet done enough,” he said.

“Women continue to bear the brunt ofsome of the worst types of crime. Rape,for example, remains at levels that are fartoo high, with more than 54 000 rapes re-

ported in the last year.”Vos said the long-awaited report on the

implementation of the Sexual OffencesAct, tabled in Parliament two weeks ago,has shown the Justice Department’s utterlack of concern with regards to the plightof women and children in our country.

“It has taken the Department nearlyfour years to produce a report on imple-mentation activities, despite this beingrequired in the Act. However, all the re-port does is show how the Departmenthas not implemented the Act,” Vos said.

He said in the wake of horrendous sex-ual offences statistics with reportedly54 000 reported rapes since the beginningof 2011, one cannot afford to treat eitherthe legislation or its implementation withanything other than the utmost urgency.

He called on government to rectify thewrong. “Government must act decisivelywhen dealing with the plight of womenand children.”

Vos said the run, in partnership withthe city, was to acknowledge the scopeand excellence of women’s activities.

“By their actions they have demonstra-ted they are the true heroines of our nati-on, and of our city, and their selfless dedi-cation will be a valuable stepping stonetowards making South Africa truly a nati-on of hope.”

I have recently become a cyclist again af-ter many years out of the saddle.Having been a cyclist in my younger

days I have always beenverymuchawareof the cyclists on the road and over theyears realised that some of them are toblame for motorists driving aggressivelytowards them.They often ride side by side very arro-

gantly expecting motorists to be the leastand yield the right of way.On Thursday 9 August at approximate-

ly 09:00 the motorist who nearly knockedme over at the intersection of BolandWayand Wellington Road was very much inthe wrong.I was proceeding along Wellington

Road in the direction of Fisantekraal andthis particularmotorist was coming fromFistantekraal direction turning intoBoland Road.He/she clearly sawme but continued to

turn directly in front of me. There is noexcuse for her/his behaviour as visibilitywas good, the sun was not in the person'seyes and I was wearing a fluorescent yel-low jersey particularly to be clearly visi-ble. If I did not take evasive action thismotorist would have had my death onhis/her conscience for the rest of his/herlife.The motorist realised what happened

and hesitated for amoment and then spedoff in the same reckless manner.Please, I am making a serious plea to

motorist and cyclist alike to respect oneanother on the road. A few seconds of in-tolerance/impatience can cost a life andwill haunt the guilty party for the rest ofhis/her life.Mutual respect and tolerance will go a

Hospital inpoor stateRecently I took a friend to Tygerberg Hos-pital and was shocked to see how deterio-rated the place is.How can a state hospital be in such con-

dition? Isn’t a medical environment sup-posed to be clean and sterilised at alltimes?The walls and floors are filthy; the pan-

els in the ceilings are either missing orhanging down half way.It looks like they are under construc-

tion, but that does notmean that the placehas to look like a pigsty.I recently visited a mediclinic and they

were also under construction, but the en-trances and inside were spotless (I knowthat we cannot compare the two, as oneis a private hospital, but still).It is disgusting how ourmedical system

can actually allow this to happen. It justshows us that if you cannot afford privatehospital or do not have medical aid, youwill end up in a dump and might not evencome out alive.As I can recall, the state hospitals never

looked like this before 1994.Where the is the minister of health? Do

Theexisting Tygerberg Hospital was commis-sioned in the early 1970s. TheDepartment of Health as the user of the fa-cility is leading the process. In terms ofprogress we can report that we have ap-pointed a project manager, feasibility stud-ies were done and preparation and plan-ning of the new hospital is under way...

The hospital’s new cleaning contract willsoon be in place and will be significantlyexpanded to assure greater accountabilityand cleanliness in the hospital.

Die toernooi sal van 24 tot 25 Augustusin Durban plaasvind. Die 10-jarige Cinti-no Jnete (C.J.) Möller van Sarepta, Kuils-rivier, is ’n uitblinker in karate. Hy be-hoort aan die klub Fujian Guju Ryu Ka-rate SA in Kuilsrivier.

Ná net twee jaar het C.J. gewys hy het’n natuurlike talent vir dié sport toe hygoed genoeg was om aan die nasionalekampioenskapsbyeenkoms deel te neem.

Sy afrigter, Sensai Dean Sias, sê C.J.is baie hardwerkend en mis nooit ’n oefe-ning nie.

“Afhangend van sy prestasie is daar ’nmoontlikheid dat hy Suid-Afrika ook in-ternasionaal sal kan verteenwoordig.”Ongelukkig is die onus op elke deelne-mer om self geld in te samel vir die ver-voerkoste om aan die SA toernooi te gaandeelneem.

Dit is waar C.J. se probleem lê, wantweens persoonlike omstandighede suk-kel hy om dié geld te bekom.

In ’n briefie skryf C.J.: “My pa is dood

en my ma maak ons alleen groot. Ek be-hoort aan Sensai Den Sias se karateklub.Omdat ek baie goed in sport is, soek ekiemand wat my kan borg vir die kampi-oenskapsbyeenkoms in Durban. Ek isnog te klein om te gaan werk.”
