S
trenger stappe moet gedoen word teen
bendelede wat hulle herhaaldelik aan
misdadige aanvalle opmense of hul be-
sittings skuldig maak, s Dan Plato, Wes-
Kaapse minister van gemeenskapsveilig-
heid.
Plato het Maandagmiddag die pleidooi ge-
lewer toe hy in gesprek was met inwoners
ger, terwyl n 12-jarige meisie, Mary-Faith
Lotz, binne was.
kerk toe is, vertel Lotz.
My man het ges ek moet kom kyk, hulle
Sy was vreesbevange.
venster gaan staan, vertel Williams.
Die diefwering van die venster is gebuig
en sy is uit die huis gehaal.
Net die Lotz-gesin se stoof, gordyne, krag-
boks- en elektriese drade is beskadig.

ie bekende verwelkomingsbord in
Kuilsrivierworddalkbinnekort opge-
knap en tot sy vorige glorie herstel.
Die opknapping van Kuilsrivier se wel-
kom/welcome-bord volg glo op n onlangse
versoek van n organisasie wat aan die
plaaslike wyksraadslid, Bert van Dalen, ge-
rig is.
Volgens Van Dalen is daar reeds n e-pos
munisipaliteit opgerig, s hy.
Dis n bitter ou teken, s Van Dalen.
Zevenwacht-winkelsentrum.
Ons sal in die volgende boekjaar geld be-
skikbaarmaakomdit teherstel, sVanDa-

sluit of betrokke raak nie.
nMotorwatbuitekantdiehuis gestaanhet,
is ook in die brand beskadig.
Daar word beweer dat die ver-
meende bendelede ook al vante-
vore di huis beskadig het vier
keer sedert die begin van die
jaar, s Edith van Wyk, n ge-
meenskapswerker en familielid
van die huiseienaar.
Plato is ingelig dat diemansbe-
kend is aan die inwoners vir hul
misdrywe.
Mense moet die polisie ano-
niem oor die mans verwittig,
maar dis belangrik dat die poli-
sie op di inligting reageer, s
Plato.
Kapt. Nomathemba Muavha,
woordvoerder van die Mfuleni-
polisie, s n saak van brandstig-
ting word ondersoek.
Andr Petersen, nog n inwo-
ner, se huis is ook vroer vandeesweek in
n brand verwoes. Daar word egter geen
misdaad vermoed nie.
Die brand het omstreeks 04:30 Maandag
uitgebreek. Daar is nog onsekerheid oorwat
die brand presies veroorsaak het. Twee
houthuise en n steenhuis is beskadig. Die
gesin het ook alles verloor.

An artists impression of the brand new Eerste River High School being constructed in Electric
City, Eerste River. Residents in the area say they welcome the new school as some children
often have to travel far to attend high school. There is currently only one other high school in
the area.
Newhigh school
finally going up
RICHARD ROBERTS

A
fter years of pleading and meetings a
brandnewhigh school is finally being
built in Eerste River.
Construction of the new Eerste River
High School in Greenshank Road started
last Thursday, 30 June something most
residents here welcome with open arms.
The project is being undertaken by the
provincial department of transport and
public works for the Western Cape educa-
tion department at a cost of R60 million.
Resident Levona Coerecuis says news of
the project commencing is music to hear
ears.
She says the community has been meet-
ing formonths and that the project has been
a point of discussion for over two years.
Plans to build a school has been coming
for some time now. Because there are hous-
ing developments taking place in the area,
there is a need for schools. Currently there
is only onehigh school inward 16, she said.
Recently theWestern Cape department of
education opened its Forest Village Leader-
ship Academy a stones throw from where
the new high school is being built.
They are using the same contractor who
did agood jobon theacademy, saysCoerec-
uis, a ward committee member and secre-
tary of the Eerste River/Blue Downs Rate-
payers Residents Association.
She says there is a need for more high
schools in the community. That is why we
requested this. The influx of newhomeown-
ers who will move in when the housing
project is complete is one of the reasonswhy
this need was that much greater, she adds.
Coerecuis saysmost residents are excited
about the project, especially the parents
who have to send their children to school
outside of Eerste River.
Parentswill no longerhave topayexpen-
sive transport costs for their children to
travel to schools in Malibu Village, Kle-
invlei, Parow or Kuils River.
The new high school will also relieve
some of the pressure from the Eerste River
Senior Secondary school in Beverly Street.
Ward councillor Gordon Thomas con-
curs, saying because of the population ex-
plosion with the new housing dwellings
thatwill be built in the area, itmight be that
the two schools will however still be inade-
quate for the multitude of people coming.
But it is a great help for local parents.
Thomas says there is also a possibility
that another primary school might be built
in the area. As for the new high school he
says he feels elevated.
Byron la Hoe, spokesperson for the de-
partment of transport and public works,
says once the project is completed by mid-
2017, it will alleviate overcrowding at other
schools in the vicinity. The school will pro-
vide accommodation for 1 200 learners.
Most of the school buildings will com-
prise a framed concrete structure and a
mixture of face brick and painted infill
walls, La Hoe said.
Phase 1 will include the construction of
the classroomsandadministrative building
while phase 2 will include the construction
of external works, landscaping and the
school hall.
Teaching facilities will include 33 stan-
dard classrooms, two multi-purpose class-
rooms, two science laboratory rooms and a
media lab. The complexwill also have a hall
with toilet facilities, an administrative
building and caretakers facilities aswell as
a sports field, while the schoolwill alsohave
a number of green features.
Rainwater harvesting facilitieswill help
the irrigation of fields and gardens. All
classrooms will enjoy a lot of natural light
and bewell ventilated. The site will be land-
scapedwith a combination of grass and per-
ennial flowering plants, including planters
in the courtyard. Trees will be planted in
and around the school to provide shade,
says La Hoe, adding work opportunities
will also be created through the project and
the Expanded Public Works Programme.
Coerecuis encourages local businesses
and skilled unemployed people to take ad-
vantage of this opportunity andmake them-
selves available for work.
Memories and Melodies will host their next
concert at the Bellville Civic Theatre from
10:30 on Wednesday 13 July.
Liza Joubert will be talking about the his-
tory and players of ragtime music, and will
play some of their most memorable tunes.
Fans are invited to arrive early to enjoy
tea, coffee and biscuits at R6, along with pi-
ano music from 09:30.
V Tickets cost R50 or R40 for bookings of 10 or mall.
Call Cynthia on 021 976 1227 for more information or
to book. Tickets must be collected by 10:00.

The children and teenagers were also taught how to bake during the community youth project
held at the Kingdom of God Ministries International last week.
Kuils River children
learn new skills
S
everal young ones in Kuils River are
being kept extremely busy over the
June and July school holidays as part
of a local churchs community youth
project.
The youth project was started two years
ago by DawnBurke, a teacher at The Hague
Primary School in Delft and co-founder and
pastor at the Kingdom of GodMinistries In-
ternational in Rietvlei Road, Sarepta in
Kuils River.
I invite children of the community of Sa-
repta via schools and social media to be a
part of the churchs community youth
project. My aim is to invest and add value
to the lives of the youth so that they can feel
loved and valuable, also to develop them in-
to model citizens of our country and in re-
turn pour value back into our communi-
ties, Burke said.
The project ran from Monday 27 to Sun-
day 3 July.
We taught different skills like dancing,
singing, music and cooking and baking.
The cooking and baking workshops were
facilitated by Pick n Pay Riverpark while
the dancing was facilitated by Dominique
Burke. The singing sessions were done by
Pastor Vernon Burke.
We also had different awareness work-
shops, including one on safety and sub-
stance abuse, which was done by the Kuils
River police, personal hygiene which was
conducted by Alida Burke as well as child
trafficking which was done by Faith Van
Wyk, Burke explains.
The project was a huge success, she adds.
The parents came the Saturday evening
and watched how the youth displayed their
various skills on stage.
The children and teenagers each received
certificates of attendance and a small gift.
I hope all children play at safe places
during the holidays. Always say where you
are going. I also pray that Godwill bless our
children across the globe, Burke adds.

Gewapende rowers

K
leinvlei se polisie ondersoek n gewa-
pende rooftog nadat n groep mans
verlede Donderdag vroeg n pastoor
vlei-polisiekantoor.
Hulle was in n bank by die Eersterivier-
winkelsentrum en is daar deur die rowers
agtervolg in n wit Volkswagen Jetta met n
CW-nommerplaat.
Apple iPad in.
Niemand is tydens die voorval beseer nie.
En gelukkig is die geld agtergelaat wat
by die bank onttrek is.
trek.
Dit lyk of di soort aanvalle n tendens
TygerBur-
Hy was vroer die betrok-
ke dag ook by n bank by die Eersterivier-
winkelsentrum. Sowat R12 000 is gebuit.
val verlede Donderdag in hegtenis geneem
nie.
Mense moet asseblief versigtig wees om
nie groot bedrae geld by banke te onttrek
Wes gevlug.
A 27-year-old man was recently sentenced
to 10years direct imprisonmentby theBlue
Downs Magistrates Court.
The convicted Gershwin Tengwan
learned his fate two weeks ago on Tuesday
28 June, the police say.
Mfuleni police spokesperson Captain No-
mathemba Muavha says Tengwan was ar-
rested in 2012 by the investigating officer,
Warrant Officer Koos van Wyk, for a rape
that occurred two years before.
Tengwan was linked to the rape commit-
ted on 10 July 2010 by his DNA as the victim
in the case was unable to see the face of her
attacker.
On that day, the then 20-year-old victim
was on her way to work during the early
hours of the morning when she was robbed
and raped along the Stellenbosch Arterial
Road on the way to Zevenwacht, Muavha
says.
The perpetrator wore a balaclava during
the attack, she says.
The Kuils River polices unit for Family
Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Of-

did a good job in ensuring the suspect re-
mains behind bars, Muavha says.

A
group of Eerste River young-
sters were recently taken on a
tour of the provincial parlia-
ment in Wale Street, Cape Town
the place where often hard-hitting
debates are heard, politicians
speeches are made and important
decisions are taken.
The educational excursion to the
legislature forms part of a June/Ju-
ly school holiday programme being
run by the Eerste River based non-
profit organisation Community
Women Action (CWA).
JoanMouton, project coordinator
at theCWA, says lastweek they took
a group of young people between the
ages of 14 to 24 years to the legisla-
ture to end off Youth Month on
Thursday 30 June on a high note.
Theyouthhad the opportunity to
visit the chambers where discus-
sions and debates take place regard-
ing our province.
They were empowered as they
were taught about their rights and
what structures they can approach
in order to improve the communi-
ties they live in. The youth now un-
derstand more about our countrys
constitution and know that it is the
highest law in South Africa.
They can easily identify where
in the constitution their basic hu-
man rights are and how it protects
them, says Mouton.
She adds that the excursion was
indeed amemorable event to end off
the month.
Thank you to the provincial par-
liament for making everything pos-
sible, says Mouton.
Special trip to parliament
A group of youngsters were recently taken on an excursion of the provincial parliament in Cape Town where they were
taught about their basic human rights. The trip forms part of the Community Women Actions June school holiday
programme and its Youth Month celebration.
The City of Cape Town has com-
menced a pilot project using card
payment facilities at itsmotor ve-
hicle registration office in the
Cape Town Civic Centre.
On the first day of the pilot,
which kicked off on Monday
27 June,more than 100 credit and
debit card transactions were
processed.
According to a statement, the
City hopes to roll out this service
to other City customer centres
across the metro.
The use of card payment facili-
ties will be tested for approxi-
mately one week at the motor ve-
hicle registration (MVR) office at
the Cape Town Civic Centre be-
fore the City expands this service
to other MVR facilities across
Cape Town.
Next the service will be rolled
out to theMVRoffice in theProm-
enade Mall in Mitchell's Plain,
which will be followed by weekly
roll-outs to the MVR offices in
Milnerton, Khayelitsha, Plum-
stead and other MVR offices.
The city wide roll-out to MVR
offices is expected to take approx-
imately two months.
The City will accept payments
of up to R5000 per transaction by
credit or debit card, or any other
meansof paymentwhichdoesnot
hold any cost implications for the
client. This amount covers most
transactions by clients, be it for
motor vehicle licences, rates and
services bills, or other sundry
payments. The City will, howev-
er, reclaim the relevant banking
fee for any payment over R5000.
The roll-out of credit anddebit
card payments at all of the Citys
customer centres further en-
hances the Citys ongoing im-
provement in convenience to as-
sist our clients to pay their mu-
nicipal bills and minimises their
need to handle cash. The success
of our online offerings, such as
receiving municipal accounts by
e-mail, the option of registering
for the Citys e-services portal
which allows for online pay-
ments of rates, tariff and motor
vehicle licence payments for City
clients, as well as the option of
making payments at third-party
sites such as supermarkets, is
now complemented by the im-
proved functionality at the Citys
own customer centres says the
deputy mayor, Ian Neilson.

is nou presies twee maande
sedert die uitsetting vanmeer
as 30 vroue en hul kinders by
rylaan, DevonPark gesit. Dit het ge-
volg op n hooggeregshof-uitset-
tingsbevel wat namens Donald
Grant, die Wes-Kaapse minister
van vervoer en openbare werke,
deur n balju uitgevoer is.
Sedertdien slaap die meeste
vroue buitekant in skuilings onder
bome.
Tydens n besoek vroer vandees-
week is daar meer skuilings opge-
merk as vantevore.Die skuilings be-
staan meestal uit plastiekseile wat
deur barmhartiges aan die vroue ge-
skenk is. Houtpale wat hulle byme-
kaar geskraap het, hou die seile in
plek.
Vir die meeste mense is daar geen
ander heenkome nie. Die situasie
raak erg, vertel een inwoner aanTy-
gerBurger. Die mense se moraal is
laag, hulle raak gefrustreerd. Dit
gaannienoumeeroordiekos enkle-
re nie, vertel n vrou wat anoniem
wil bly. Tog is daarnog goedhartiges
kom aflaai.
Die departement van maatskapli-
ke ontwikkeling het in n vroere
verklaring beweer dat hy klagtes
ontvang het by die polisie van inwo-
ners wat die skuiling gebruik om
hul misdadige aktiwiteite daarvan-
daan te bedryf. Daar is aan Tyger-
Burger vertel dat sommiges dwelms
daar verkoop, dat party as prostitu-
te werk en dat sommiges nie nood-
wendig slagoffers vanmishandeling
is nie.
Die weergawe van die vroue by
Genevas House verskil egter iet-
wat.
Volgens n inwoner hier is die
dwelms deur mans buitekant die
skuiling uit n hokkie wat intussen
deur die Kleinvlei-polisie afgebreek
is verkoop.
woner.
Volgens die mense hier is die
meeste vroue slagoffers van mis-
handeling, nie net enkeles soos wat
die departement van maatskaplike
ontwikkeling beweer nie.
Daarwordbeweerdieuitsetting is
n persoonlike vendetta teen die
stigter, Geneva Claasen, wat intus-
sen by haar seun in Malibu Village
ingetrekhet vanwehaar ouderdom
en die ysige koue toestande snags
buitekant.
vergaderings of samesprekings ge-
hou nie.
Onswagnogoponsprokureurs,
s die inwoner.
Daar is ook beweer dat die gebou
nie meer leefbaar is nie.
Maar in vergelyking met die op-
slaanplekke, is die gebou veel be-

Boxing keeps kids out of trouble
Coach Mbuzeni Slow Poison Mbofu says he is
determined to help the young boys in Eerste
River stay on the right path with the boxing
club he recently established in the area.
RICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
C
ould the next Floyd Money May-
weather, Muhammad Ali or Mike Ty-
sononedaybe coming fromEersteRiv-
er? That might not be too impossible consid-
ering the recent opening of the newly
established Eerste River Boxing Club in the
area.
Almost each day a total of 16 boys of vari-
ous ages get together at the local Multi-pur-
pose Centre (MPC) for two hourswhere they
build muscle, improve their punches, foot-
work and duck and dive ability in their at-
tempt to some day, just like the late Ali, be
able to fly like a butterfly and sting like a
bee.
All of this is made possible by the efforts
and hard work of coach Mbuzeni Slow Poi-
son Mbofu, a former professional boxer
hailing from East London in the Eastern
Cape.
He told TygerBurger in an interview last
week that he started the club to help make
a difference and to have a positive influence
on the young boys, and in so doing help keep
them off the streets and out of trouble.
The 50-year-old father of three is no
stranger to the boxing ring which is evident
in the passion he speaks with when asked
about his fighting career and history.
I started boxing in 1972 but first joined
the amateur ranks in 1976 at the age of 10.
My first professional fight was in 1985.
My love for boxing startedwithmybroth-
ers and father, who also boxed. I grew up in
that environment, plus there was no other
sports for us to play, explains Mbofu, who
is currently unemployed.
He stopped competing in 1993 when he
moved to Cape Town.
Asked why, he answered: I had a feeling
that boxing was not going in the direction
I wanted it to go.
His love for the sport however never died.
I continued to go and watch matches and
in 1998 I went back into the fighting arena.
Years later he was asked by some of his
friends to become a trainer.
They literallypersuadedmeand I trained
some of them for a while.
Twoof his studentswent on to becomepro-
vincial champions, he says.
After moving to Eerste River he noticed
how some of the boys were caught up in
street fights, gangs and crime.
My one friend suggested that I open up
a gym in the area.
At first I was hesitant, he adds.
Mbofu,whomuchratherpreferredbecom-
ing a referee, says he could however not ig-
nore the plight of the boys in Eerste River.
The robberies and stabbings continued
and this encouragedme to openup the gym.
Finding a place to train the youthhowever
proved to be somewhat of a challenge. With
the help of the clubs now secretary, David-
John Bailey, they managed to get access to
the MPC.
He saw me train the boys in a car park
next to the MPC and these boys have boxing
skills; that is why he assisted.
Mbofu says the training he does is not for
him, but rather the children.
I do not gain anything from this. It is
merely for the love of the sport, he says
smiling.
Currently the clubhas a shortage of equip-
ment, but Mbofu hopes this will change in
time.
The boys love it. There is one boy who
always arrives at my house at 15:00 even
though we start training at 16:00 and that is
why we have nicknamed him Three o
Clock.
Mbofu says he not only teaches the boys
how to box, but also makes themmore disci-
plined and teaches them not to fight in the
streets. I rather encourage them to walk
away from a situation, that the only place
they should fight is in the boxing ring.
Asked about what he further hopes to
achieve with the club, he replies: Respect,
love and responsibility.
The club trains from Mondays to Fridays
from 16:00 at the MPC.

The new Eerste River Boxing Club currently has 16 members but will hopefully grow as they gain
more sponsorship. Here are a few of the clubs members from left to right Damiane Beast

Hope springs eternal.
Hierdie Alexander Pope-aanhaling het
onlangs by my opgekom toe die ouens
wat my beroof het, binne dae vasgetrek
is.
as n toeskouer. Iemand wat van buite
inkyk en die situasie net op sigwaarde
beoordeel.
Die spoed waarmee my aanvallers
baas sal waai. Dat ons belerde president
die leisels sal
neerl as hy nog n
greintjie integriteit
oor het.
Ek het begin glo
dat die Springbok-
ke soos die Lions,
en beter nog, soos
die Nieu-Seelanders
sal begin rugby
speel. Dat hulle
kan pass en skop
en tkkel.
Daarna het ek
begin glo dat my
agtjarige klong sy
skoolloopbaan in sy moedertaal kan
voltooi. Dat hy eendag, al is dit net in sy
tuisprovinsie, kan gaan studeer in die
taal wat hy uit moederskoot praat. My
geloof was so sterk dat ek seker was
rassisme, in al sy vorme, kan uitgeroei
word.
leef, moet h.
uitken. Die eerste keer kon ek nie gaan
nie, want alle speurders het rusdae
gehad. Die volgende keer was hulle by n
afskeid van n kollega. n Ander keer is
die speurkantore met gif bespuit om
insekte te dood. Hoeveel ander mense het
nie intussen slagoffers van di gewetenlo-
se misdadigers geword nie, terwyl ek
hulle kon uitken? Ek is nie belangriker
kry.
Hope springs... Brenden Ruiter..

Nobody can deny that
alcoholism has reached
epidemic proportions not
only in SA, but all over the
world.
The amount of man hours
lost to business due to not
pitching up for work on a
Monday being sick is huge
and 99% of the people are
suffering from hangovers.
Kids are not being moni-
tored anymore as to the age
they are served alcohol.
Death on the roads has
reached peak limits due to
drinking and driving.
I think this thing at pubs
and bars offering a happy
hour where for an hour or
so, you can benefit from
drinks being ordered at half
price, is despicable. Patrons
down as much as they can in
the shortest possible time,
then go onto the roads.
Where are the cops to
catch these people before
they start driving?
They know that they are
doing this at these public
houses where drinking is
rampant.
To be inebriated is now
considered cool! No thought
is given to consequences at
all.
If you drink, stay at home
and go to bed in your own
home, or phone Uber!

As a retired couple, my
husband and I want to
express our thanks to the
amazing workers at an eatery
at CapeGate. We often hear
that young people ignore the
elderly, and are not willing to
assist nowadays. Well, this
was not our experience.
A week ago we were at
Panarottis. My husband (84)
had an event which caused
him to lose consciousness.
The action of Donavan Swart
and Jesse Jarmin was amaz-
ing, to say the least.
Their prompt action in
working out the best way to
get professional help, was
mature, caring, and full of
genuine concern. My hus-

well, and I, would like to
commend these two young
men, and thank them for
helping two retirees in their
hour of need.
Our sincere thanks, and

I refer to Peter Smuliks letter
Ignorance over nuclear
tech, TB, 22 June.
Admittedly, the major
problem with nuclear reactors
is what to do with them when
they are shut down. Any
items through which coolants
have flowed for a few decades
will end up heavily contami-
nated with various radio
nuclides, a lot of them with
very long half lives tens of
thousands of years in some
cases. So they dont decay
very quickly.
Like it or not, with all the
reactor plants the world is
going to have many reactor
containment buildings around
for hundreds of years, in
Fukushima cannot
happen atKoeberg
houding vergeet.
As ek die gewone gasverhit-
ter wat ons direk op die
gassilinders skroef, as n
voorbeeld kan noem.
Die belangrikste item, glo
ek, is die rubberwaster op die
nek van die verhitter, waar
sy skroefdraad in die gassilin-
der indraai. Om daardie
waster voor die winter te
vervang behoort jou nie meer
as vyf minute te neem nie. As
daardie kritiese onderdeel,
wat met die tyd kan verbrok-
kel, n gaslekkasie veroor-
saak, bestaan daar n sterk
moontlikheid dat daar n vlam
kan ontstaan met moontlike
duur gevolge en selfs lewens-
verlies.
Sou daar op n dag wel so
n brand by die verhitter/gas-
silinder ontstaan, sou ek s is
die belangrikste om nie
paniekbevange te raak nie.
Stuur onmiddellik kinders uit
die gevaarsone.
Kry jou eggenote se oond-
handskoene en dra die
silinder regop teen n vinnige
pas uit die huis na n veilige
oop ruimte buite die huis en
laat die silinder op sy voet-
stuk staan.
Kry jou naaste tuinslang en
spuit n egalige stroom water
teen die sykante van die
gassilinder om dit heeltyd
koel te hou.
Moet nooit die vlam probeer
blus nie, maar laat dit
uitbrand terwyl jy die silinder
koel hou.
Moet ook nooit die gassilin-
der op sy sy laat l terwyl dit
brand nie.
Baie van ons sou miskien
die grasperk naaste aan die
gesinskamer as n veilige oop
ruimte wou gebruik, maar om
in n panieksituasie met n
oop vlam onder deur n
gordyn te hardloop, kan meer
skade aanrig as om net
iemand te stuur om gou die
voordeur oop te sluit en die
brandende silinder op die
oprit neer te sit en dan koel
te hou.

be finally dismantled and

broken up.
But a lot of the problems
about long term storage of
spent fuel elements is finding
sites where the local inhabit-
ants dont come out gasping
Nimby!
To a large extent nuclear
power is so easily misunder-
stood where safety is con-
cerned, and incidents like
Chernobyl and Fukushima
have not made that situation
any better.
Plus, of course, the enthusi-
asm for renewable energy
generating sources, solar and
wind in particular, but for
which the free power source
is largely intermittent ...
There are people who would
like you to believe that what
happened at Fukushima could
happen at Koeberg.
It cannot happen.
As far as I am aware, there
are no earthquake subduction
zones around the Atlantic
seaboard. The only situation
for a real disaster would be
for a large asteroid to hit the
Atlantic Ocean and produce a
wave half a kilometre high,
but that would destroy
everything in its path when it
reached the shore.
Also the reactor types are
quite different. Those at
Koeberg are high pressurised
water reactors, with all the
reactor plant installed in very
strong reinforced concrete
containment buildings. The
Fukushima reactors are
relatively low pressure boiling
water type.
But, really, locating those
emergency diesel generators
below ground demonstrated a
most remarkable lax in design
professionalism. Who by? I
wont speculate!
If those diesel generators
had been installed well above
ground level, we would never
even have heard of Fukushi-
ma.

Swift Redemption
offers new sound
LOUISA STEYL
@lousteyl
W
hat do you get when you put a group
of musicians from vastly different
musical genres together in one
band?
The answer is northern suburbs A Swift
Redemption who describe their music as
post-grunge alternative rock. Add pro-
gressive guitar riffs and a violin and youll
find a sound reminiscent of early 2000s
bands like Seether, Fuel and System of a
Down, yet still unique.
ASwift Redemption got their start in early
2015 after frontman Stephen Brink-Jones
wrote a song Stand Alone as a tribute to
his brother Michael, who passed away the
year before. Stephen, who has played for a
few local metal bands, realised that he had
a lot of his own material that hed simply
never played before. He always pushed me
to play my music, he says of his brother.
So, with this inmind, he put out a call to find
musicians for anewband. Facebook is your
friend, he jokes.
JoinedbyEmileMaritz on lead guitar, Tri-
cia Theunissen on violin, Cole Grainger on
drums and Christo Bester on bass, A Swift
Redemption set about recording their first
album in October, before playing their first
show in Durbanville in November.
Nostalgia, their 10-track release, was re-
corded and produced by Ruan Jordaan of lo-
cal metal band Megalodon and released in
April this year.
Based on his experiences with previous
bands, Stephen explains that this time
round he wanted to have a product to offer
before they started seriously performing. I
thought that it would be a better idea to have
people actually know what you sound like
before they just come out to see you.
A lot of people, if they really like a song,
they are going to come to a show in anticipa-
tion of that song, he continues, before Tri-
cia adds: And sing along, which is some-
thing theyve experienced at their gigs late-
ly.
Christo describes Nostalgia as pretty
mucheveryadjectiveyoucan thinkof, add-
ing that fans have said they enjoy the diver-
sity of their sound. Tricias violin adds a
unique twist to their brand of rock.
Since releasing Nostalgia, they have been
trying to advertise the band and gig asmuch
as possible.
Theyve released a music video for the
song Save me some while some of their
music has been playlisted on MFM 92.6 and
Zone Radio.
Its nice that the album is out; the hard
work is done, Cole says: Now its basically
just having fun.
He points out that the band has only really
played venues in Durbanville, Bellville and
Observatory so far. We havent really cov-
ered the Western Cape, which is something
we want to do.
Theyll addanewvenue to their list onSat-
urday (9 July) when they share the stage
with Verona Walls and Dustland Express at
The Nameless Pub in Somerset West where
entry costs R30 at the door.
On Saturday 16 July theyll be at Elling-
tons Pool Saloon in Bellville for Day of Re-
membrance 2016, an annual concert Stephen
started after his brothers passing. This year
will see Dig a Pony, Trophy Friend, Addic-
tion Kings, The Signal Rose, Cherry Vinyl,
Nuns or Ninjas and A Swift Redemption on
stage from 17:00 after an open mic session
from 14:00. The cover charge is R40 at the
door.
