Só lui die laaste strofe van ’n gedig wat Maridene deBruin (16) geskryf het oor haar vriend, Simon Matthee(23), wat op 27 Januarie in’n nare motorfietsonge-luk oorlede is. Simon isnoodlottig beseer en Ma-ridene, wat saam methom was, is as gevolg van’n rugbesering verlammet geen hoop op herstelnie.

“Simon het my by diehuis met sy motorfietskom haal. Ons was op padna sy huis in Brackenfelltoe ’n bakkie by die ver-keerslig voor ons ingedraai het,” sê sy. Simon het pro-beer rem, maar die motorfiets het die bakkie getref enMaridene het van die motorfiets afgevlieg en aan dieanderkant van die bakkie te lande gekom. Simon het’n kopbesering opgedoen en is oorlede ’n week nadathy in die hospitaal opgeneem is.

“Aan die begin was dit vir my baie erg om te aanvaardat Simon nie meer hier is nie. Maar my sielkundigehet gesê ek moet al my gedagtes neerskryf en dít is waarek begin het... om gedigte te skryf,” sê Maridene.

Ook met die feit dat sy nooit weer sal kan loop nie,het sy gesukkel, maar sy het vrede gemaak daarmee.“Ek mis my dans, al die trofeë en medaljes staan nogin my kamer, maar ek het nou aanvaar dat ek nuwebene het wat rol,” sê sy.

Die enigste tyd wanneer haar ge-stremdheid haar onderkry, is as syin die oggende opstaan en vergeetdat sy verlam is. “Dit is nogal ’nskok as ek wil opstaan en besef datek nie kan beweeg nie. Dit is waarwat hulle sê, ’n mens waardeereers regtig dít wat jy het as jy ditverloor het”. Maridene het dié tra-gedie agter haar rug gesit en daar isbaie dinge waarna sy nou uitsien. Sy hetMaandag vir die eerste keer weer terugge-gaan skool toe.

“Ons is vreeslik dankbaar vir EtienneVosloo wat ons gehelp hetom Maridene by Jan Kriel-skool in te kry. Hy het uit sypad gegaan om ons te help,”sê Nadine de Bruin, Maride-ne se ma.

Rozelle Theron, eienaarvan die Langverwacht-diere-kliniek in Kuilsrivier, het dade-lik ingespring om geld vir ’n elek-triese rolstoel in te samel nadatdie De Bruins se mediese fonds niedie koste wou dek nie. “Rozelle hetso baie tyd aan ons afgestaan en

tyd is nie iets wat ’n mens kan teruggee nie,” sêsy. Nadine sê dat hulle nou graag vir Maridene’n bietjie meer spasie in die huis wil maak sodatsy op haar eie kan regkom. “Ons wil haar kameruitbrei sodat sy onafhanklik kan raak,” sê sy. “Ekhet nog nooit daarvan gehou om vir geld te vra nie,maar ’n mens kom op ’n punt in jou lewe waar jymoet aanvaar dat jy nie sonder die hulp van joumedemens baie ver gaan kom nie,” sê sy.

Die liggaam van ’n 30-jarige man is op 1 Ja-nuarie vanjaar langs die R300 agter Bet-El-skool gevind. “Die liggaam is eers ’n maandnadat die persoon oorlede is, in die bosse ge-vind,” sê kaptein Isaac van Niekerk van dieKuilsrivier-polisie.

Van Niekerk doen ’n beroep op lede vandie gemeenskap om die polisie in kennis testel indien hulle so iemand vermis of enigeinligting het omtrent die liggaam. Met ’n passie vir die opheffingvan die jeug is ’n gemeenskaps-werker, Dawn Roode, besig omhaar moederlike vlerke oor diehele Suid-Afrika te sprei. Roodewerk al jare lank onder die jeugin Kuilsrivier en het sedert haaronderwysdae ’n passie vir dieverbetering van ander se lewe.

Met die ondervinding wat sy hier-deur opgedoen het, het sy verledejaar ’n handleiding geskryf oor die

self-ontdekkingsprogram wat sy byverskeie jeug-werksessies aanbied.

“Nadat ek die handleiding vryge-stel het, het ’n oorsese groep my ge-nader om die selfontdekkingspro-gram in 10 provinsies dwars oorSuid-Afrika aan te bied,” sê sy. Metdié projek word daar beoog ommeer as 150 jong mense in elke pro-vinsie te bereik voor einde Septem-ber. “Dit gaan baie harde werk weesmaar vir my is dit ’n uitdaging watek met liefde en entoesiasme salaanpak,” sê sy.

ter stadium het. “Die positiewe uit-werkingwathierdieprogramopdiekinders het, is ongelooflik. Nadatjong mense die program voltooi het,is hulle altyd gemotiveer om hulskoolwerk en persoonlike sake ag-ter mekaar te kry,” sê sy.

Roode het reeds in Kuilsriviermet die program afgeskop en ver-trek binnekort na Gauteng.

Sy laat nie op haar wag as dit bydie bevordering van ander kom nie,en sê dat “’n vlieënde kraai altydiets het en ’n sittende kraai niks hetnie”.

Met Miss Earth word jong Suid-Afrikaan-se vroue bemagtig met die kennis en dieplatform om ’n volhoubare verskil te maakteen die vernietiging van ons natuurlike er-fenis.

As deel van die kompetisie moet finalisteverskeie groen projekte doen.

Butterfly Educare-kleuterskool het sy eieklein groentetuin. “Ek het die kinders toe-gespreek en hulle vertel van die noodsaak-likheid van ’n groentetuin asook die aan-plant en versorging daarvan,” sê Kreshén-ke.

Sy het ook aan die kleintjies gedemon-streer hoe sade in gebruikte eierdosies ge-plant kan word en later weer in groter bed-dings uitgeplant kan word. Die kinders wasbaie opgewonde en entoesiasties oor dié be-soek. Fourie het aan Elizabeth Marais vanButterfly Educare, ’n verskeidenheid sadeen eierdose oorhandig om te gebruik. “Disafkomstig van my kleinsus, Monique, segroenprojek,” sê sy.

Fourie se wens is dat alle kleuterskolewat ’n stukkie ongebruikte grond het, ditsal bewerk om hul eie groente en vrugte tekweek.

“Ek is besig met die tweede gebod dat jyjou naaste moet liefhê soos jouself.”

Só praat Johan Visser van Hermanus oorsy droom om vir ’n miljoen heropbou-en-ont-wikkelingsprogramhuise (HOP) ’n badka-mereenheid te installeer.

Hy het ’n projek in dié verband, genaamdHot Water for Africa, begin en ’n geleentheidom geld vir dié doel in te samel, is verledeweek by Bloemendal gehou.

Ferdinand Rabie, bekend as Suid-Afrikase eerste Big Brother-wenner, isook betrokke by die projek en hetdié aand opgetree as seremonie-meester.

Dié idee het ’n paar jaar gelede byJohan posgevat nadat hy besef hetdie vrou wat sy dogter help groot-maak het, moes sonder warm wateroor die weg kom. “Ek was aanvank-lik onbewus daarvan dat HOP-hui-se nie oor so ’n basiese gerief beskiknie, tot in 2005 toe ek een dag by dievrou se huis was en dit self gesienhet,” sê hy.

Johan het besluit om iets aan diesituasie te doen en het besluit om ’nproduk te ontwerp wat in dié huisegeïnstalleer kon word.

In Suid-Afrika het die mark om só’n toestel teen ’n bekostigbare pryste ontwerp, nie bestaan nie. Oor ’ntydperk van byna drie jaar is daargewerk aan die konsep en uiteinde-lik is ’n gietvorm vir ’n plastiekke-tel, wasbak en bad in China laatmaak.Die drie-in-een-produk is ont-werp volgens spesifikasies wat ge-skik was vir die soort huise waarindit geïnstalleer sou word.

Die warmwatertoestel word toe-gerus met ’n elektriese kragprop,

wat water binne 40 minute verhit nadat ditaangeskakel is.

Johan sê hy hoop steeds om die Suid-Afri-kaanse regering te oortuig om dié stelsel bydie HOP-huisbegrotings in te sluit, want alis dié stelsels teen baie bekostigbare prys be-skikbaar, is dit steeds méér geld as wat inwo-ners van HOP-huise vir so ’n toestel kan be-taal.“Vanaand speel ek egter die RobinHood-rol en die doel van vanaand is om geldte kry by mense wat meer het, om vir dié tegee wat minder het.”

Johan, wat ses maande van die jaar in En-geland woon, het daar ’n liefdadigheidsorga-

nisasie gestig en ’n artikel 21-maatskappy inSuid-Afrika. Johan droom daarvan om vir ’nmiljoen huise die stelsel te installeer, maarskenkings is noodsaaklik. Tot dusver dra hyself die kostes daarvan.

Die higiëne wat die produk verseker, is ’nbelangrike aspek. “Dikwels bad mense nie,bloot omdat dit te koud is,” sê Johan.

By die deftige aansitgeleentheid by Bloe-mendal het die Gugulethu Tenors opgetreeen toe hulle hoor waarvoor geld dié aand in-gesamel word, het hulle hul deel gedoen deur’noptredegratis aan tebied,wat by ’nveilingdie aand opgeveil is.

Die ontvangspersoon en vorm-intikkerwat die eerste stop by noodgevalle is, isnie een van dié kenners nie. Sy probeerbelangstel terwyl sy luister na jou pyn,koors en ongerief en besluit daarvolgensof jy ’n rooi, oranje, geel of groen stickerkry.

Rooi sê die mens is tegnies dood. ’n Rooisticker laat jou direk deurgaan na ’n ka-mertjie waar hulle probeer om die garing-draadjie waaraan jou lewe hang, in ’nstaaldraad te verander.

Oranje sê jykan tegniesnoggeredword.Met ’n oranje sticker het jy ’n lisensie ombinne tien minute gehelp te word.

Van geel af begin die belangstelling injou mediese ongemak taan. Met ’n geeltoestand van ongesteldheid, kan jy tot ’nuur wag, sê die plakkaat. This number – 0800 872 201 – according toCornelia Finch, district head of the City ofCape Town’s social development sector, wasrolled out as part of the Give Responsiblycampaign.

This campaign, launched last month, aimsto discourage members of the communityfrom giving irresponsibly.

“Handouts given directly to street peoplesustain a deeply damaging lifestyle on the

streets. With our programmes we aim to getthem off the streets, by a holistic approach,”she says.

“If you really want to help, phone the toll-free numbers to find out how and where youcan help.

“You can also report street people to thiscall centre, from where action will be taken,either by means of a social worker or organi-sation,” she says.

The call centre can also advise you or di-rect you to the nearest organisation.

According to Finch the call centre will bemanned by four dedicated staff members,and she advises the public to phone the callcentre, instead of the police or ward council-lor, in cases involving street people.

Darting my cat wasa disgraceful actI live in Protea Village and I woke up overthe weekend to find my black and white catsleeping in its usual place and then noticedsomething like little fluffy pods sticking toits fur.

On closer inspection however I wasshocked to discover that they were in factsmall pigmy darts of the kind fired througha thin tube placed in the mouth.

There were a number of these little dartsand I literally had to pull at them to get themout of the cat’s skin.

On my way to the kitchen I found more ofthese little darts laying about the house.

The cat must have pulled these out by it-self.

Some had broken off and left the tips stuckunder the skin.

I have no idea who would want to abusean animal like this, but I would like to pointout to him or her that the abuse of animalsis a criminal offence.

Chances are that this was done by childrenas I can’t see any adult in his or her right

mind doing something like this.I would just like to appeal to all parents to

please educate their children about this sortof thing, even if you think that your childwould never do something like this.

Of course, there also exists the possibilitythat this was done by an adult.

If my cat has entered your property andyou do not approve, that is to be respected.However, shooting it with darts is not justi-fied.

I mean, what would have happened if thedart had hit the poor cat in the eye?

Would it be okay for the cat to go blind inone eye just because some kids were havingfun or because the cat intruded on somebodyelse’s property and they felt that it deservedto be darted?

Nobody wants to see their pets mistreatedlike this and quite frankly, it is disgracefulthat we still have people in our communitieswho does this sort of thing.

The trust, which gives relief to cancer ba-bies and their families, has been selected asone of the beneficiaries for the ’Cause WeCan!/Want Ons Kan! charity concert featur-ing some of the top names in the SA musicscene.TygerBurger is the media sponsor of the

Sunday 29 July and will showcase artistssuch as Laurika Rauch, Andriëtte Norman,Alan Committie, Zanne Stapelberg, ADAM,Heinz Winckler, Koos Kombuis, Wicus vanderMerwe,LizeBeekman,BrandonOctober,Emo Adams and Take Note, Pedro Krugerand Dowwe Dolla.

“We are trying to raise money to help thefamilies of the children who have been diag-nosed with cancer,” says Mandie Erasmusfrom the Little Fighter Cancer Trust.

“Cancer is not a thing that happens to aperson of a certain age. We need to createawareness in South Africa as more childrenare being diagnosed and these families needsupport.”

She says some of the parents lose their jobsand businesses because of the medical billsand because they want to give their childrenthe best medical care.

“These people need petrol money, food,clothes and money for hospital and doctorbills and that is where we come in and tryto assist.”

The trust was started in 2010 by Tania Gos-lett and Thomas Engela in Paarl.

They were offering support to families butthen they realised that they needed to be abigger trust to offer assistance to more fami-lies.

In less than a year they were offering sup-port to 40 families all over Cape Town andeven Johannesburg.

The trust shows support to any child diag-nosed with cancer under 18, but if the childis over the age and still has cancer, the rela-tionship will continue.

Erasmus came on board after her mother,grandmotherandgrandfatherdiedof cancer.

“Cancer patients have always been close tomy heart. I started reading the trust’s Face-book page and after Tania and Thomas askedme to get involved I started doing fundrais-ers.”

From these fundraisers outreach pro-grammes were started and the Bag of Hopeproject was born – the trust makes up foodparcels for the families of the cancer chil-dren, they also refurbish the beds and draw-ers.

Families also receive bags containing cere-al, noodles, coffee, tea, sugar, shampoo, con-ditioner, toiletries andother things theymayneed.

Children receive bags with clothes, shoes,stationery, toys, toiletries, juices, a blanket– all the essentials they may need.

“For Mother’s Day we want to do some-thing for the mothers too because they wouldsit at hospitals sometimes for years whiletheir children are receiving cancer treat-ment and often they have to sell their belong-ings to pay for the treatment,” says Erasmus.

“That’s where we come in: we distributebags to the mothers with nice feminine good-ies and flowers. We will also be cooking anice lunch for them on the day.”

Erasmus says the goodies are and will bedelivered to various places who care for chil-dren who have been diagnosed with cancer.

She says for the future they are looking atgettingvehicles tohelpwith the transportingof the goods. They are also looking at buyinga house close to the Red Cross Children’sHospital.

“We want the mothers to come to the houseand have a place to unwind after spendinghours at the hospital. We also want to em-power the mothers, many of them have givenup their jobs to be able to be with their chil-dren and we need to assist them,” says Eras-mus.

“We want to have short courses, includingcomputer literacy to empower these wo-men.”

She says it is “heartwarming” to be one ofthe beneficiaries of the Cause We Can!/WantOn Kan! concert.

“We are very humbled to have been selec-ted as a beneficiary. We will be able to betterour service to the community.

“We are thankful for the opportunity,” shesays.

A part-nership between M-Net Cares, Decorex CapeTown, Salvocorp (the official distributor ofStaron by Samsung), as well as local design-ers and businesses will support the M-NetNaledi Children’s Literacy Project, a pro-gramme that encourages a love of reading inprimary school children.

Aidan Bennetts, Katie Thompson of ReC-reate, Joe Paine and Goet will design be-spoke children’s bookshelves, using literacyas their cue. The M-Net Cares Café will alsobe offering decor inspiration with its interi-or design tapping in on the typographytrend. All the furniture, including a curvedcounter, four bookshelves, letter bar stools,tables and chairs by Eclipse and Samsungtelevisions will be donated to a Naledi li-brary supported by M-net Cares.

Tying in trends, celebrity and charity, theOperation Man Cave design initiative clev-erly combines do-good design with men’sfantasies of having their own metro-sexualor macho space. Four Cape-based personali-ties, each representing their charity ofchoice will team up with Cape-based design-

ers to build their ultimate ‘Man Cave’. Ex-pect names like Bob Skinstad and his broth-er Dan, Aidan Bennetts, soccer player, RyanBotha and comedian Kurt Schoonraad. Visi-tors can donate money to their favouriteman cave and stand a chance to win big priz-es by voting. The star and designer duo withthe highest amount raised wins braggingrights as well as an additional R10 000 to-wards their charity, courtesy of Decorex SA.

His Creedence Clearwater RevivalTribute has rocked sell-out audienc-es at all of the Barnyard as well asThe Performer Theatre, RichardLoring’s Sound Stage and many oth-er venues such as the Rustic Theatreon Main, Blues Room, Keegans andthe Firkin in Centurion.

Clint performed in the CarnivalSymphonic Pops and was very wellreceived.

He sold more CDs after each per-formance than any of the other art-ists. Due to popular demand, this

Die 21.1 km-halfmarathon en die10.5 km x 2 aflos begin om 07:10. Die5 km-pretstap begin om 09:00 en die10 km-stap om 09:30.

Die halfmarathon word ook deur dieBoland as ’n liga-byeenkoms aanvaar.Die atlete kan uitsien na verskeie pry-se, biertuine en kosstalletjies.

Daar sal ook ’n Safari-winkel weesmet verskeie promosieprodukte te

koop. New Balance gaan ook ’n uniekeskoenpasmasjien daar hê om atlete tehelp om die regte besluite te maak.Daar gaan ook ’n masseerterapeutwees.

’n Derde agtereenvolgende oorwinningdie afgelope naweek maak Durbanville/Bellville tans die vroeë voorloper op diepunteleer in die A-afdeling van die WP seSuper-rugbyliga.

Maar dit was grootliks ’n teleurstellendenaweek vir die spanne in die Tygerberg-streek, behalwe dat Noordelike/Northlink-kollege en Bellville darem ook aan die wen-kant was.

Nadat die Durbies verlede Woensdag ’nveelseggende oorwinning van 27-19 oor Uni-versiteit Kaapstad behaal het, het hulle Sater-dag ook 32-10 met die Victoriane afgereken.Die Ikeys se nederlaag was die eerste ná 14agtereenvolgende oorwinnings sedert verle-de seisoen in die Superliga. Durbanville sevoorhoede het die studentespan deeglik laatles opsê.

Ook in die wedstryd teen die Victoriane isdie studentespan voorlangs ore aangesit endanksy die Durbies se baie balbesit het hulledie meeste aanvalswerk gedoen. Daarmee is’n bonuspuntdrie ook bewerkstellig.

Hoewel Tygerberg-klub 18-34 teen Schot-sche Kloof/Walmer verloor het – nadat hy

met die draaislag nog 18-12 voor was – kon dieKaapse besoekers eers kort voor die einde ’noorwinning verseker. Die Floridapark-span severdediging was nie in die tweede helfte nawense nie.
