“Milnerton Police are being in-formed where all the drug deal-ers stay but nothing is being

done,” exclaims an anonymous Rugby resi-dent.This resident wrote this in a letter to Ty-

gerBurger in which she vehemently at-tacked the local police and their supposed“lack of action” indealingwithdrugdealers.“There aredrugdens that thepolice ofMil-

nerton know about but people have seenthem collecting payment from the drug deal-ers in Rugby! Milnerton police station hasbeen made bigger so they could transfer allthe corrupt police here,” continues the resi-

dent.These accusations come as a surprise to

police spokesperson W/O Daphne O’Reilly.“I can assure the public that we are cer-

tainly not in cahoots with the drug dealers.We do plenty of operations that the publicdo not always know about,” she says.

OperationsThe resident specifically used houses in

Madeira and Santos streets as examples ofplaces where people often buy drugs, andO’Reilly responds by saying that quite a fewoperationswithnotable successes have beenperformed specifically in Madeira street.“What peoplemust realise is that it is very

easy to complain, andmany do, but whenweapproach them for statements then they shy

away,” says O’Reilly.People are, according to her, afraid to give

a statement, but she emphasises that thesecould be given to the police anonymously.“We need as much evidence as possible in

order to get a search warrant. In most caseswe need warrants to search a premises, un-less very convincing evidence or suspiciongives us the right to search without a war-rant,” continues O’Reilly.The newMilnerton Community Police Fo-

rum chairperson, Karen Visagie, says it isvital that the public “join forces” with thepolice in fighting drugs.“This is not a problem only to Milnerton,

Cape Town, or even South Africa.“The whole world suffers from drugs,” ex-

plains Visagie.

DistributerShe also add a different perspective when

she says that the public don’t always see thebigger picture when it comes to drugs.“We are sometimes overly concerned

about the drug addict or small-time dealer,whereas thepolicewant to catch thebigdrugdistributers.”She concludes by saying that the only way

a community can win the war against drugsis with more co-operation and less finger-pointing.ThesewordsbyO’Reilly andVisagie do lit-

tle to extinguish the fire in the belly of theresident: “We as ratepayers want these drugdealing foreigners out of our community!It’s a disgrace! It’s our community and Ithink we have the right to demand service!”

Thousands of matrics from allover the country celebratedtheir results last week whilehundreds wished they studieda bit harder. On Wednesdaythe results accompanied tearsof joy and relief, such as thosefound on Sinombongo Macekis­wayo from Sinenjongo HighSchool. “When I arrived on the scene there was anocean of people,” says ER24 paramedicShane Fascio.“One couldn’t make heads or tails what

happened and the flurry of bystandersmadeour job even more difficult.”TygerBurger spoke to one of the first para-

medics who arrived on the scene of a huge

accident on the N7 near Morningstar on Sun-day afternoon at 16:45.One person died and 66 were injured when

an open back truck collided with a Golf.“On the way there I got a phone call from

an ER24 paramedic who was already there. Iknew it was going to be serious when he said‘Get here now!’ We are trained to handlemasscasualties but it is never easy. Injured peoplewere spread out over the field next to the roadand there were about 50 bystanders and peo-

ple rubber-necking when I arrived,” hesays.The N7 was closed for more than two

hours while paramedics and emergencyservices tried to do all they could.Air-medical support was required for a

person critically injured, as they neededurgent evacuation.Fascio continues by saying that one of

the most challenging parts of such a sceneis to first assess the situation and not getstuck on just one patient.“It’s for the greater good,” he adds as an

afterthought.This was the largest accident scene Fas-

cio attended formany years (the last beingthe Kloof Nek school bus accident), and hesays that his 10 years’ experience and in-tensive training prepared him for whatwas waiting for him that day on the N7.The vast majority of those injured were

thrown from the back of the truck whenit rolled and the person who died on im-pact was also on the back of the truck.

It was apparently transporting workers toa nearby farmwhen it collided with anothervehicle.ER24’s Russel Meiring says that most of

the injuries on scenewere light tomoderate.Headds that a triage (inwhichpatients’ inju-ries are prioritised) must be done as soon aspossible.The exact cause of the accident is un-

known at this stage.Philadelphia Police spokesperson, Capt

Frederick Roussouw, says they are investi-gating a case of culpable homicide againstboth the driver of the truck and the Golf, aswell as a case of drunk driving against theformer.“It looks to us that itwas human error that

caused the accident.The truck was headingnorth and the Golf was heading west. It issuspected that the driver of the Golf stoppedfor some reason and then the truck collidedwith it,” says Roussouw.The person who died was a woman who

sat on the passenger’s side of the truck.

After roughly 14 000 hours of school,the sun has finally set on thousandsof matrics with regard to their schol-

arly adventure.Last weekmatrics collected their results

from their respective schools. Those pa-rading in the streets inevitably drew theattention away from those moping in cor-ners.After their results were collected, many

would have graced the school grounds forthe last time. For now they will rememberit as a place of laughter, happiness, adven-ture, chagrin, fear and agitation.And decades from now the 2013 matrics

will join all those before them when theycome to the conclusion that school was inactual fact a place of safety.TygerBurger asked most of the local

principals how learners in the schools didand how this comparedwith 2012’s results.

V Bloubergrant High School had 73learners who wrote their NSC examina-tion and 73 passed. In 2012 the schoolachieved a 97.8 % pass rate. There has alsobeen a 20 % increase in bachelor degreepasses.Principal Denver Walbrugh adds: “I am

extremelyproudof theachievements of thematriculants of 2013. Our results of 100 %was achieved through sacrifices, hardwork and commitment from educators,learners and their parents.“The educators have met the challenges

throughout the year and were joyous incelebrating the results with the learners.Some of our learnerswent through person-al difficulties during their examinations.Tragically, two of our learners lost parentsduring this time. Support and guidancegiven by all staff resulted in their Bach-elor’s being achieved.”

VBuren High School had 75 candidatesof which 71 passed. That means the schoolhad a 94.7 % pass rate – a 10 % increasewhen compared with 2012. A total of 14(37.3 %) passedwith university admission.Says principal Annetjie Louw: “I am

very proud of all the learners that achievedgood marks overall. I would also like tothank all the staff for their hard work anddedication to all the learners during 2013.”

V CBC St John’s Parklands had 45 can-didates all of whom passed.Fourteen of them passed their matric

with distinction.Despite 2013’s class being slightly small-

er than that of 2012 school principal Col-leen Bentley says their latest results are“very comparable” to those of 2012.She adds: “We are enormously proud of

our 2013 matriculants and congratulatethem on their excellent results, the culmi-nation of their journey in theNational Sen-ior Certificate. This class has been known

for its originality and impish spirit and nowcontinues the proud St John’s tradition of a100 % pass. With the help of their dedicatedand talented teachers, they have achieved anexcellent set of results.“The Board of Governors and I take this op-

portunity to thank the teachers of CBC StJohn’s for their unflagging commitment totheir students. They have ensured that theirchargeswere as prepared as possible for theseexaminations, sacrificing many hours oftheir own time for extra lessons and revisionexercises.”

VMelkbosstrand Private School had 22matrics who wrote the exams and all of thempassed.Three passed with an A-aggregate, as op-

posed to two out of 30 learners in 2012.According to the school the favourable re-

sults can be directly attributed to small class-es and the high standard of teaching.Says principal Danie Malan: “We are very

pleased with the 2013 results especially be-cause of the increase in bachelor degree pass-es from 63.3 % to 95.5 %.“There has also been a general improve-

ment in the subject averages with physicalsciences that boasts an average of 70.2 %,mathematics with 68.1 %, visual arts with81 % and English first additional languagewith an average of 76.3 %.”

VMilnerton High School had 191 candi-dates of which 191 passed. The principal, PaulBesener, is very proud when he says theschool has achieved a 100 % pass rate for thelast 10 years.There were 28 A-aggragates and 138

achieved bachelor degree passes (a substan-tial increase of 10 % when compared with

2012).Says Besener: “We attribute this to the

fact that their subject choice options weremanaged better. We have also increasedthe numbers of maths and physical sci-ence learners, because of the value to theirqualifications.“In 2012 we had 62 learners offering

mathematics and 90 in 2013. Our teachersare also encouraged to extend themselvesand to become markers and senior mark-ers, so that this experience is returned in-to the school.“In addition, the teachers grow and be-

come confident about their ability and weall knowhow confidence can create a posi-tive climate andatmosphere.Wealso pushthe learners to trust their teachers and doexactlywhat they demand – if they do this,we virtually guarantee them success. Self-belief is a wonderful thing!”

V Parklands College had 65 candidatesof which 62 had bachelor degree passesand three diploma passes.A total of 17 learners achieved an A-ag-

gregate and therewas abroaddistributionof distinctions with 153 in total.Says principal Sylvia Steyn: “Parklands

College has maintained a 100 % pass ratesince our first matric class wrote examsin 2000. This yearwehave a largernumberof learners who passedwith entry to bach-elor studies.“There is a greater awareness among

learnerswhen selecting subjects to ensurethat they qualify for these.“Overall we are delighted with the re-

sults of the class of 2013. Effective team-work between the motivated learners,

dedicated educators and supportive parentsresulted in yet another year of success and ex-cellence at the college.“While we celebrate the top achievers’ re-

sults, we also want to congratulate the oneswho may not have achieved distinctions, butworked hard to succeed in the NSC examina-tions.“Hard work will stand you in good stead for

your tertiary studies and we wish everyonewell as they embark on their new journey.”

Hadlowwas unable to compete in the 2013 editionof the competition due to injury and is hun-gry to challenge for the title: “I’ve been rid-ing in Cape Town for 12 consecutive sea-sons and have always loved the strongwinds. When asked who had the strongestchance of coming out on top, his answerwas rather diplomatic: “The best thingabout this event is that at least half of thefield are odds on to win this event – anyonecould take home the win. SinenjongoHighSchool in Joe SlovoPark has maintained its meteoricturnaround of recent years achiev-

ing a 93%pass rate in the 2013matric ex-aminations with the school’s topmatric-ulant, Sinombongo Macekiswayoachieving six distinctions, four of whichwere above 90%.

The 93% pass rate is virtually un-changed from last year’s 94%. Of the 91matriculants who wrote this year, 85passed outright and three of those thatfailed have qualified to write supple-mentary examinations. Another success story is that of 20-year-old LethukuthulaMoyowho had todrop out of matric in 2012 with drug re-sistant XDR TB. She returned in 2013and through hard work and determina-tion not only passed all her seven sub-jects but achieved a B-aggregate.Lethukuthula plans on studying nurs-ing at UWC this year.

The number of Sinenjongo learnersachieving bachelor passes enablingthem to go on to study at university to-talled 30 while 39 achieved a diplomapass enabling them to go onto study a di-ploma course at tertiary level.

DistinctionsAll in all there were 28 subject distinc-

tions in maths, science, business stud-ies, English first additional language,life sciences, geography, economics.

Christmas spirit was available in spadesthis December in places such as Joe SlovoPark and Phoenix.

The jolly atmosphere was partly due toward councillor Joy McCarthy, Kensing-ton’s Lisa McBride and her family, Dial-a-Picnic, Shireen Khan, Merrypak and Print,and On the Dot.

A Christmas party at the Joe Slovo Parkand Phoenix community hall that was in-tended for 150 children quickly grew to 192kids.

Says McCarthy: “On arrival the childrenreceived a cold ice lolly, sweets and bubblegum. The community leaders and I pre-pared the 200 sausage rolls while the chil-dren played games, had dance competi-tions and sang to live music. The children,aged between three and 13, each also re-ceived a bag filled with sweets, a game andgifts and had their photos taken with Fa-ther Christmas.

With a movie appearance and national air-play, DirtyFunk say their hard work isshowing rewards.

“It’s been a long journey but it’s finallypaying off,” says DJ and producer DaleJohnson, the creator of the music project.Rapper, singer and dancer AndreMachent,makes up the other half of the group.

The group are originally from Kuils Riv-er, but are now based in Goodwood.

The two recently played rappers in aWarner Brothersmovie,House Party 5. Themovie hasn’t hit South African shores yet,but was released last year in America.

The movie also gave them the opportuni-ty to work on a song with internationalstars Julian Works, Keith Powers and Te-quan Richmond (from the TV show, Every-body Hates Chris).

Their song, “Geechy” has been playingon Good Hope FM, Bush Radio, YFM andKhozi FM.

Dale explains the song title: “You knowhow guys say they have Swag?Well Geechyis taking it to the next level.”

Last year the group also released thesong, “Rockstar”, featuring Jack Parowand Ebi. The song was playlisted locallyand made it to number seven on 5FM’s hip-hop chart and number one on Kovsie Fmin Bloemfontein.

Their latest offering, “Drop Top”, fea-tures the voice of Reece Faure, and Dalesays it has more of a summer feel.

The music video was filmed locally andhas already been released. “It highlightslandmarks in Cape Town,” Dale explains.

DirtyFunk say they are nearly done withtheir album and are hoping to release it inJune this year.

“I’m the kind of guy who likes to take mytime,” Dale says, explaining why it’s takenso long to release an album. “I playwhatwould be called sort of neo-folk finger style which involves somepercussive stuff on the guitar body.”

That’s how local singer/songwriter, DaveKnowles, describes his music.“I’m also a composer and a guitar teacher,

but for the last seven years, I consider thisto be how I express myself,” he adds.“My music, I like to think, has a lot of

soul,” Dave says.He explains that he only writes when he

feels he has something to say, or somethinghe needs to say.“If I have a song that doesn’t quite sit right

in one part, I abandon it,” he points out, re-ferring to his compositions.While his songs have elements of blues,

folk and rock, Dave says each song is its ownsound.Dave has been living in Kenilworth in

CapeTown for about twoyears, aftermovingfrom Grahamstown where he was studyingmusic, history and philosophy.Before that, he had travelled with his pre-

vious band to Manchester, England, wherethe band played for a year.“I was in an indie-rock band, round about

the time of Tweak and The Finkelsteins, sowe didn’t exactly fit the local market,” Daveexplains.“It was a very amazing and humbling ex-

perience when your realise you are one of4 000 bands that are just as good, if not betterthan you,” he says of his travels with theband.Dave explains he left the band because

while he knew they would be successful, hedidn’t feel it would be on his own terms.“Iwanted to know that ifwemade it, itwas

because it was themusic I wanted to bemak-ing,” he points out.So Dave got an acoustic guitar and moved

to clean rooms in backpackers in London.Dave says while his studies helped him

understandmusic theory and compositionalelements, it didn’t teach himhow to express.“The way I was expressing was unique to

me and it wasn’t something I was beingtaught,” he explains.Dave says he found himself trying to un-

learn the “fastidious, theoretical” aspects hehad learnt in terms of his performance.Dave has been working on an album at Af-

rican Sun Studios, which he hopes to releasein the next fewmonths. “The songs I’ve beenperforming solo for seven years are now go-ing to have an amazing orchestration,” hesays. The album’s tentative name is In Wak-ing Skin, although Dave says there’s achance it could still change.You can catch Dave performing live on 8

space for the items at my house and we arestill some time off getting the actual keys tothe house and moving in.“The storage we have here is by no means

ideal and we don’t want the donations be-coming damaged. We have been offered freespace on the grounds of one of our volun-teer’s factories to place a shipping containerfor storage.

The tournament kicksoff at Hamilton’s RugbyClub with a gala dinneron Thursday evening 6February and the rugbyand netball games on 7 to8 February.

With 100 social rugbyteams playing up to 800games over the weekend,as well as the addition of40 netball teams, CapeTown Tens is set to beSA’s biggest social sportsevent of the year.
