The police here say several cases have been reported to them over the past few months, but that the amount of incidents have increased over the last four weeks. Colonel Luyanda Damoyi, Mfuleni police station commander, told TygerBurger on Monday that children – especially between the ages of 4 and 12 – fall victim to the crime. Wesbank, Happy Valley, Bardale near Mfuleni and Bardale Village are the four main areas of concern. “It has been coming on for some time but we have noticed an increase lately in the ar- ea,” Damoyi said, urging parents to be vigi- lant in spite of the success they have had. “Most of these children are raped at night. “Some of them will play at a park and be lured away by a stranger who will offer them sweets. When the child follows them, they are taken to a bush or a nearby car where they are sexually assaulted,” Damoyi ex- plained. Most of the victims who have been at- tacked, are under age. The attackers, the po- lice say, are mostly older men. According to Damoyi girls are mostly the victims. “We have had two incidents in which boys were also attacked.” He added: “Whenever we visit shebeens and close them, we find that very young chil- dren also hang out there. This is a huge con- cern as often they too get attacked and raped. “Many of them are intoxicated and end up stranded at the shebeen. They will ask a lift from a stranger who will attack and rape them.” Damoyi encouraged parents to always ac- company their children to parks. He also encouraged parents to have a stricter curfew for children, mostly between the ages of 14 to 17 years, who visit shebeens.

RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj

A heavy blow dealt to the drug market inWesbank has allegedly forced gangs here topursue a different means of “earning” an in-come – house robberies.

According to Mfuleni police station com-mander, Colonel Luyanda Damoyi, this isthe latest trend.

According to Damoyi the continuous suc-cessful confiscation of drugs have severelyhampered the drug selling operation in thiscrime ridden area. For this reason manygangs now resort to house robberies, Dam-oyi explained.

“We put a lot of pressure on drug dealersand drug dens.

“We confiscated a lot of drugs but now wefind that these gangs are moving on to com-mitting house robberies to ensure that theyhave an income. We retrieved a lot of drugsand this does not allow them the opportuni-ty to grow their market,” Damoyi said.

The police said several suspected house

robbers are known gang members. The police have therefore encouraged

home owners in the area to be vigilant.A similar warning has been issued to resi-

dents in Extension 6, Mfuleni, where houserobberies are equally common.

“We have noticed that the attackersknock on doors late at night and when thehome owner opens, they strike. They nor-mally steal flat screen television sets andcell phones.”

Damoyi said: “Ensure that your burglarbars and gates are locked.”

According to the police house robberieshave been on the increase for the past threemonths. This, along with other increasingcrimes such as business robberies and carhijacking, is a great concern, Damoyi said.

According to him especially businessowners need to be vigilant.

“We have noticed an increase in businessrobberies – mostly at informal traders.

“Often the attackers will wait for the busi-ness owner to arrive with stock to off-load.It is at that time that the criminals pounce,”

Damoyi explained. He said in a lot of these cases foreign na-

tionals are the soft targets.“Other times robbers also impersonate

City of Cape Town officials to gain entry tobusiness properties. In one instance a wom-an would claim to work for the council andrequest to see their documentation. Whenthey open the door, the men attack.

“City officials are normally accompaniedby law enforcement or metro police offi-cials. Do not open your doors; first contactthe police,” Damoyi pleaded.

Vehicle hijacking is also a huge concern.“This normally occurs at night when peo-

ple pull into their driveways. Most of thetime they are being followed by their attack-ers.”

In most cases VW Polos are the vehicle ofchoice.

Damoyi warned: “Before parking, pleasefirst look around and make sure you aresafe. If or when you observe a suspicious ve-hicle or person, drive past and contact thepolice immediately.”

Gangs resort to robbery

ties is to assist the helicopter pilot to identi-fy and avoid hazards in flight – also de-scribed as being the “eyes and ears” of thepilot. The ELO is trained to communicate in-

structions and crucial information to the pi-lot, and monitor the safety of rescuers and

the patient when on board the aircraft orwhen connected to the rescue systems.“I startedworking at a private ambulance

service after graduating and was made per-manent at the AirMercy Service (AMS) lastyear, the next best adrenaline rush to comealong,” explains Lindsey, a self-proclaimedadrenaline junkie. When this opportunity arrived, she grab-

bed it with both hands.Lindsey, who graduated in 2011 at the

CapePeninsulaUniversity ofTechnologyasan emergency care technician, has under-gone extensive training before being ap-pointed as ELO.“I have always wanted to help people, and

when you see that smile on people’s facesafter the job is done, you just want to comeback for more.”Recently she was faced with a great chal-

lenge. “We had to extricate six people from

a ledge near Rhodes Memorial.“It was a late afternoon call. Fortunately

no one was injured.“There was no way out for the group and

we had to extricate them from a confinedspace. The wind was gushing and we werestruggling. It was crazy.“I told myself I can do it, and I will do it

– I am capable,” she explains.Lindsey is currently one of only six ELO

workers in the employ of the Western CapeDepartment of Health’s EmergencyMedicalServices and AMS rescue helicopter pro-gramme.The helicopter crew consists of the ELO,

a command pilot, a paramedic and a techni-cal rescuer or rescue swimmer.“We are very proud to say that Lindsey

is the private sector’s first rescue female ex-ternal load operator,” says AMS spokesper-son Venessa Horn.

SAKKkinders wilnou ná dekadesweer herenigRICHARD ROBERTS

@richardjohn_rj

digers nie.“Dit was baie lekker tye. Dit was ’n baie

beskermde omgewing.”Die korps is in 1992 ontbind.“Ons het almal kontak verloor. Baie van

die weermaglede is uitgeplaas. Die reüniewas die eerste geleentheidwaar onsweer by-mekaar kon kom en stories deel,” vertel Ce-lia wat deesdae in Kuilsrivier woon.Sy voeg by: “Ons wil ook die veterane op

’n manier steun.”Die volgende reünie is op 16 Desember.

Ward councillor Desmond Jaftha and mayoral committee member for corporate services andcompliance, Xanthea Limberg, try out the new service in Belhar.

Improved services in Belhar are just aphone call awaywith the opening of a newFreeCall line in the suburb. The City of Cape Town’s mayoral commit-

tee member for corporate services and com-pliance, Xanthea Limberg, last week un-veiled theCity’s newest FreeCall line, whichis situated in Belhar. The FreeCall line is in the Huguenot

Square Hall and can be used to contact the

City for various enquiries and service re-quests, including account enquiries, andalso to report illegal dumping, water leaks, sewer blockages, street lights that are notworking, potholes and damaged roads.Today’s unveiling brings the total num-

ber of FreeCall lines installed in communi-ties across the city to 128.The City is aware of the limited landline

availability and the high costs of cellphone

calls. This led to the City installing FreeCalllines in public amenities in communities, which residents can use to contact the City. When a resident picks up the handset, theywill immediately be connected to the callcentre at no cost. The call centre agent willrespond in the language preferred by thecaller, log the service request, and providethe caller with a reference number.“The City is committed to improving our

service delivery, especially to lower incomecommunities,” said Limberg. “We urge resi-dents to make use of this FreeCall line andcall report faults, log complaints and requestservices.“Residents can further play their part in

helping us build a well-run city together by

reporting acts of vandalism and the theft ofCity property. Our Customer Relations De-partment has increased the City’s capacityto respond to complaints, repair faults, andmonitor service delivery in the quickesttime possible.”FreeCall lines are available in communi-

ties across the city fromAtlantis andMamreto Manenberg, Bishop Lavis, Hanover Park,Mitchells Plain, Brown’s Farm, Retreat,Ocean View, Hout Bay, Dunoon, Philippi,Langa, Nyanga and Gugulethu.“In line with our commitment to building

a caring city, more FreeCall lines will be in-stalled during this financial year in themostvulnerable communities across the city,”concluded Limberg.

Service delivery in the impover-ished Kalkfontein has come toa halt allegedly due to threats

made towards council workers.Formonthsnowworkers from the

department of roads and stormwa-ter tasked with conducting roadmaintenance and repairs have beenreceiving threats. Some have beenthreatened that their vehicles willbe set alight. Others have beenchased away.

It is still unclear as to who is re-sponsible for the threats. Some resi-dents TygerBurger spoke to howev-er have identified the small group ofprotesters as supporters of the EFF.

As a result of the threats very lit-tle or even no work has been doneon the roads in the area. Many areleft dirty and potholes remain unre-paired.

Paul Malakoane, chairman ofSanco, said somepeoplehave resort-ed to constructing informal speed-humps in Sikelela Street. Others, he

says, have created ditches in ChrisHani Street to ensure traffic calm-ing measures.

Roads in desperate need of repairincludeElmarie, Brenda andVeren-igde streets.

“I havewritten a letter to theman-ager and chairman of subcouncil 21asking them to meet in order to seehow we can tackle this problem.

“We cannot allow this to happen. The community wants to see main-tenance work done to the roads andin the area.“We need to inform them as to

what exactly is going on; that cer-tain elements are stopping the workfrom being done,” Malakoane said.

Apart from the poor rood condi-tions, broken street lights are anoth-er major concern.

“Two months ago a man waskilled in Mount Fletcher Streetwhere the lights are not working. This is a dangerous spot andalso thecorner spot for gangs.“The community is fed-up with

this,” Malakoane added.Justin Wildebees, a community

worker, concurs.“The dirt is all over the place; ev-

erywhere you look. This is reallytragic.“What is evenmore painful is that

this whole thing is as a result of asmall group of people,” he said.Jacob Jacobs, ward 11 councillor,

said a meeting was held last weekwith some of the people intimidat-ing the council workers in an at-tempt to resolve the matter.According to Jacobs the group re-

quested that they be part of the deci-sion-making process regarding ser-vice delivery in Kalkfontein andVrygrond.“We cannot ask them for permis-

sion to do work in the area. Theseare council workers. The longerthey keep on interfering, the lesstime we will have to upgrade theroads and also spend the funds allo-cated for these jobs,” Jacobs said.A follow-up meeting is set to take

place soon. The convener of the group respon-

sible for the intimidation could notbe reached.

A five-year-old’s fascination with hors-es has become a passion for a 17-year-old inBelharwho isnowready to jump

to another level. The journey for Jessica de Vries started

with a family visit to Spier in the winelandswhen she was five, and led to a passion that

has seen her winning show-jumping compe-titions for many years. Her mom, Charlene, described the start of

that passion when the family visited Spiermentioning that even as a toddler she hadthis fascination with horses. “She would al-ways point out horses in books or when wewere out on a family drive,” she says.“Then on the visit to Spier there were po-

ny rides and she did not want to stop riding.

She just wanted more and R200 later thegroomwhowas leading the horses eventual-ly let her start leading the horse around –and she was completely comfortable with itfor the rest of the day!”That day was the start of Jessica’s passion

and her dream of going on to a higher leveland competing at the Olympics.“I live, eat, sleep and dream horse riding

and show-jumping,” says the young eques-trian, who is also an accomplished artistwho loves drawing her favourite animal.“Show-jumping has beenmy passion from

an early age and I have the determinationand drive to compete on a professional levelwith my ultimate goal being the Olympics.“I currently have a 10-year-old gelding

who was dressage schooled but I have per-sonally schooled him for show-jumping.“He is performing excellently in practice

shows andwe havewon every practice showthatwe entered. My years of horse riding ex-perience and training has put us in goodstead to compete on a professional level butcompeting, paying for tack andmaintainingmy horses has been extremely challengingand expenses are escalating.”Jessica explained that her mother has al-

ways supported her and carried the finan-cial burdens of the sport but injured her legat work and is now unemployed.“It is for this reason I need to seek sponsor-

ship to assist me in attaining and achievingmy goals,” she says.“I intend to partake in competitions of the

South African National Equestrian SchoolsAssociation as a starting stone to the rest ofmy competitive career and will be enteringthe qualifiers early next year.”While Jessica had years of riding lessons

at junior level the family couldnot afford les-sons at a higher level but that never deterredthe young rider.“I would not allow this to get me down so

I spent many years riding, practising andtraining on my own.“There was always this quest for acquir-

ing more information, knowledge and tech-nique so I watched videos, read books andspoke to experts in the field,” she said.Mom Charlene is very proud of her

achievements. “Her dedication to her sportis phenomenal, even facing the setback of

my injury,” she said.“People in the sport have acknowledged

her excellence as a rider and the results inrecent shows have proven this.“Thehardwork that she puts into training

has also paid off in her school work whereshe is also a top achiever knowing that ittakes hard work and concentration to be thebest, and that is her goal in show-jumping.”Jesica says horse riding is known to be a

sport for the rich.“I have experienced this at many competi-

tions, but my sacrifices, tears, hard workand determination is my motivation to suc-ceed and be aworthy competitor,” continuesJessica.“My appeal for a sponsor is for more than

helping me achieve my dreams in the sportbut I also want to be a positive role-modelto other young people from all walks of lifeto strive to reach a positive potential in life.“They must join me in showing the world

that I am proud of where I come from andnever put a limit on where I want to be.”

Pluto the Boxer was allegedly stolen and sold.

Precious paws sold on beachPluto, a 7-and-a-half-year-old Boxer dog whowent missing while his owner was surfingin Granger Bay, was reportedly stolen andsold for R50.His bereft owner, Robert Abel, told

News24 on Sunday that he left his “sweet na-tured” pet on the beach on Friday while hehit the waves – something he often did, asPluto is well known in the area.“Everyone loves the dog ... He is legendary

atmost of the surfing beaches of theAtlanticseaboard.”When Abel came out the water, he saw

that Pluto was gone.He began looking for him and approached

a couple on the beach to see if they had wit-nessed Pluto’s disappearance.Thewoman told him that the dog had been

with them before, but then her “friend soldhim for R50” to a woman in a car.She told him the womanwas at Pick n Pay

with the dog, and would return.“You will get your dog back,” she said. However, shortly afterwards, the couple

disappeared from the beach area. Abel saidthey appeared to be homeless.Abel then went to a nearby police station

where he was told that if he emailed a photoof the dog, patrols would be informed to lookfor him.Once he did so, he decided to stop looking.“I would have kept hunting but I thought

the patrol could cover more ground.”However, Abel said hewas horrifiedwhen

hephoned thepolice station thenext dayandwas told that they did not have access to theemail system after hours or on weekends.“It’s absolutely appalling,” said Abel, re-

gretting the lost time he could have been outsearching for his precious pooch. By Sun-day, he had still heard nothing about Pluto.Abel said he got Pluto when he was six

weeks old and “you could hold him in onehand”. He said while Pluto did not like toswim “he did love to run in the water”.

JP Smith, mayoral committeemember forsafety and security, says that while he hasnot heard of the abduction of dogs frombeaches, he knows of two cases where dogswere snatched in the vicinity of their own-ers’ homes and sold.He says many people who might appear

homeless are in fact “strollers” who come toareas like the beaches in the day, in orderto “acquire odd jobs or seek donations”, be-fore returning to where they actually lived. He believes “the chance is slim” that Pluto

will be spotted. In terms of the City’s by-law, the selling

of domestic animals is illegal. Legally, a petis considered property, so its abduction isclassified as theft. However, people have a“much greater attachment to pets” than oth-er property, says Smith, adding he would bedevastated if anything similar ever hap-pened to one of his three cats.Smithurges peoplewhoexperience a simi-

lar predicament to contact the City’s emer-gency line as theywould be able to alert vari-ous officials, including themetro police, firedepartment and emergency centre, to be onthe lookout. The number is 021 480 7700.Pluto has a reddish-brown coat and had a

black leather collar on when he went miss-ing. He is also micro-chipped. – News24

Homeless star for South AfricaEARL HAUPT AND NAZLIE DOLLIE

South Africa’s HomelessWorld Cup soc-cer team returned home last weekwithpride after losing only one of their

World Cup matches in Amsterdam.Ricardo de Reuck’s charges finished fifth,

after initially getting off to a flier in thegroup stages of the tournament, winning alltheir opening matches. The World Cup uses the game of soccer to

inspire the homeless to make significantchanges in their own lives, whether it be bygetting a job or returning to their families. The competition currently has 74 country

participants. The South African team comprised five

representatives from the Western Cape, twofrom the Eastern Cape and one fromKwazu-lu-Natal. In the second group phase of thetournament, the team only dropped pointsin a draw with Brazil on their way to theknockout stage of the event. However, they would come unstuck

against Portugal in the quarter final, losingthe match 5-2.But they redeemed their pride by bounc-

ing back in the fifth place play-off, beatinglast year’sCup championChile in the semifi-nal before seeing off Romania to secure fifth

spot. Despite coming agonisingly short ofclaiming the grand prize, De Reuck main-tains that the bigger picture for their oppor-tunity to represent their country is a tre-mendous achievement in itself.“We grew up surrounded by gangsterism,

we know what poverty is like, yet weachieved certain things in our lives. Theycan do the same if they put the hard workin”, says De Reuck when speaking about histeam.De Reuck points out that there are a few

ex-players who are now actively involved inthe organisation, and says that it is all aboutseizing this opportunity that is given to

them. “There are a lot of people out therewho believe in what we’re trying to achieve. These guys just need to believe in them-selves, their abilities and the possibilitiesthat are out there.”The team’s playing kit was designed and

provided by PlaySport4Life as well asStreamline Agencies.Miles October, founder of PlaySport4Life,

has expressed his delight at being involvedin the initiative.“This a great example of how sport can

take youplaces in even themost unusual cir-cumstances. Sport is the catalyst for you tomake that change in your life.”

Dit bring ook mee datsewe van die 15 spanne in die A-afdeling vol-

VARSITY FOOTBALL: UWC 2-1 VS TUT

TTwwoo llaattee ggooaallss ffoorr ttiittllee

UWC celebrates their 2-1 final win over TUT on Thursday night. PHOTO: CHRISTOPHER YOUNG/SASPA

UWC claimed their first VarsityFootball title as they came frombehind to beat TUT 2-1 in the fi-

nal in Cape Town on Thursday. Two second-half goals saw the

home side prevail at the “OperationRoom” where they have gone unbeat-en this season.Thevisitorsmadeade-termined start to the game and tookthe game to thehostswho found them-selves on the back foot from the out-set. It did not take long for TUT tostrike as Masonwabe Sokanyile bur-ied an early free kick which left UWCgoalkeeper Reon October standing toput his side 1-0 up.UWC had an opportunity from a

free kick of their own shortly after-wards, but Phiwokuhle Mpalalacould not hit the target after meetinga deep ball at the back post. Sipho Si-biya from TUT claimed the first cau-tion of thematch after a reckless chal-lenge on UWC’s Marchello Viglino asthe home side went in search of a re-sponse.The second card of the game came

shortly afterwards, and it was UWC’sKeenan Davis who went into the ref-eree’s book.TUThad thewindat theirbacks and controlled the rest of thehalf to take their 1-0 lead into the half-time break.UWC came out hard in the second

half as they sought to work their wayback into the game in front of the par-tisan crowd. Ryan Steer had a greatopportunity to level the scores whenhe had a free header at the back post, but the UWC striker missed. They had their goal before long as

Keenan Davis scored with a headerfrom a corner to send the crowd intoraptures.UWC coach Salie Adams brought

on big striker Josh Silent which paidoff in the best possible way as hefound the back of the net from a tightangle to give his side the lead. TUTthrew everything into attack in a des-perate attempt to find a late equaliser, but it was not to be as UWC held onfor their first title in front of theirhome crowd.
