Every single blown kiss made it to Sand-ra’s heart – a kiss to say “I love you”,a kiss to say “Thank you”, and a kiss

to give her strength.“Beat the cancer and get better soon,” it

seemed to say.The emotional teacher could not hear the

heartfelt songs or well-wishes of the child-ren that morning, because she was standingbehind a Panorama Medi-Clinic window.Yet, the message was clear – the three to

four-year-old children of Milnerton’s Cove-nantKidsPre-PrimarySchoolmissesher ve-ry much. Sandra Wright (59) of Edgemead

has touched a countless number of lives inher career as a pre-primary teacher.She has left a mark on each child who was

privileged enough to have her as their tea-cher, yet Sandra has a different view.

ChemotherapyEvery single child she was privileged

enough to teach left a mark on her.And these marks were never deeper than

those left on Friday when about 15 pre-pri-marykids, assistant SoniaKleine andownerStefan Pflocksch waved at her from the hos-pital’s parking lot. They sang while holdingup flowers to her, called out to herwhile car-rying well-wishing signs and blew kisses toherwhile shewas crying in the hospitalwin-

dow. Sandra is currentlyundergoing chemo-therapy for lymphoma, a type of blood can-cer. She will have to go back to hospital on17 March to undergo another 22 hour chemosession.TygerBurger spoke to her on Friday, the

very same day on which she was temporari-ly discharged. The children’s flowers andpersonalised “get well soon” messages me-ant the world to the surprised teacher.

Two women in their forties have beenarrested at a Plattekloof Glen residen-ce and charged for prostitution, run-ning a brothel and the possession ofabalone.The two women, who are Chinese

Dis nie net die gapende gate in die plafonvan die Parow-biblioteek wat regge-maak gaan word nie. Die hele gebou

gaan aandag kry in ’n projek wat minstenssewe maande sal duur.

Volgens Leonore van der Walt, raadslidvir Parow, is daar R7 miljoen opsy gesit omook die matte, gordyne, toonbanke, ligte enmeubels te vervang. Die hele dak, wat jaar-liks ná die reënseisoen opgeknap moes wordoor lekkasies, gaan ook oorgebou word.

“Dit kon net nie meer langer so aangaannie. Die nok van die dak is te laag, wat ver-oorsaak dat reënwater nie gou genoeg vandie dak afvloei nie. Die binnemure en mattevan die biblioteek het dus elke reënseisoennat geword. Gelukkig is skade aan die in-houd van die biblioteek nooit aangerig nie,”sê Van der Walt.

Sy sê tenders vir die vervanging van diedak word eersdaags gevra en die projek salhopelik voor die einde van Junie aangepakword.

Terwyl daar aan die gebou gewerk word,sal die biblioteekdiens steeds by die munisi-paliteit se kleinsaal op die terrein van dieJan Burger-sportpark in De Grendelstraat,Parow-Noord voortgaan.

Volgens Van der Walt gaan meer as 40 000boeke in houers verpak en op ’n ander plekgestoor word, maar sowat 10 000 boeke salna die kleinsaal verskuif word waar dit nogsteeds uitgeneem sal kan word.

“Die gewildste fiksieverhale en boeke watleerlinge nodig het vir skoolprojekte, sal indie kleinsaal beskikbaar wees,” sê Van derWalt. “Ons is baie bly oor die goeie nuus,”sê Kathleen Laishley, hoof van die biblio-teek. “Hierdie gebou is nou meer as 30 jaaroud en dit is hoog tyd dat hy opgeknapword,” sê sy. Volgens haar wag hulle nou netom te hoor presies wanneer die verbeteringegaan begin, sodat hulle voorbereidings kan

tref vir hulle groot trek. “Ons gaan ook uit-reik na skole en ouetehuise en boeke na hul-le neem en by hulle gaan haal in hierdie tyd,maar ons moet net eers by hulle uitvind watdie behoefte is,” sê Laishley. Sy sê van dieParow-personeel sal waarskynlik in anderbiblioteke in die omgewing gaan werk, ter-wyl die regmaakwerk gebeur.

Laishley sê die vakansieprogramme enskrywers- en leesgroepe sal soos gewoonlikvoortgaan, maar by die kleinsaal plaasvind.

“Die publiek kan ook steeds by enige vandie 102 ander biblioteke van Mamre tot Gor-donsbaai boeke gaan uitleen met hulle Pa-row-kaartjies, solank die boeke net weer bydieselfde biblioteek teruggegee word,” sê sy.

Die kleinsaal is langs die rolbalklub se ge-bou en die ingang is uit De Grendelstraat.

Bobby Black, die voormalige voorsittervan Jan Burger se fasiliteitsbestuur, het ge-sê alles moontlik sal gedoen word om biblio-teekleners welkom te laat voel op die sport-terrein. “Die sportterrein is nou so mooi op-geknap, dat dit waarskynlik ’n baieaangename uitstappie gaan wees,” sê hy.

Die Parowbiblioteekspan kan nie wag vir die vernuwing van die biblioteek nie. Hier is FabianJosephs, Jodie Oliphant, Noxolo Gaba, George Lewis, Kathleen Laishley, Rozaan Visser, CheneStuurman en Philipa Tezha. Voor is Pakama Zantsi en by die toonbank is Thembela Vellemrow.

An under utilised park in Parow might soonbe turned into a community garden.

Representatives from the Tygerberg Ser-vice Centre, the department of social deve-lopment and the parks department recentlymet up to discuss the establishment of sucha garden in Weimar Street, Parow.

Clive Justus, chairperson of subcouncil 4,has confirmed the possibility of creating acommunity garden is being explored. Hesays the social development department un-dertakes similar projects elsewhere in theCity as part of food sustainability initiati-ves.

The plan is to divide the open space to ac-commodate the growing of vegetables in thegarden while still allowing sufficient spacefor recreation activities. The existing playequipment will not be removed.

One possibility is that the garden will betended by seniors from the Tygerberg Ser-vice Centre who will also benefit from theharvest for the ongoing feeding schemes ofthe organisation.

According to Linda Louw, manager forthe service centre, their board will have todecide how a project such as this one wouldbe approached.

“We are part of the process and the boardis studying the draft we received from theparks department. We are considering thebenefits of such a community garden,” shesays.

Justus says the Oranjezicht City Farm,which is co-ordinated by Sheryl Ozinsky,would serve as a model for this garden.“Ozinsky has graciously agreed to give ad-vice,” says Justus.

According to him, the establishment andoperational detail would be worked out asthey proceed and could include a widernumber of participants such as aneighbourhood watch, Elim Night Shelter,welfare NGOs, sport clubs and churches.

“I was overwhelmed by the positive res-ponse from parks and social welfare depart-ments regarding the release of land, possi-ble financial support for infrastructure likefencing, placement of a borehole, seeds andseedlings, compost and fertiliser,” says Jus-tus.

Safety concerns for the parking area ofPick n Pay Parow Family Store on the cor-ner of Jan van Riebeek and Alexandra StParow were recently raised at a meetingbetween Parow police, the electricity de-partment, the owner and manager of Pickn Pay and the subcouncil chairperson, Cli-ve Justus.It was resolved that the owner would un-

dertake to fence off the parking area.The city agreed to install additional pu-

blic lighting, to repair existing lightingand to place signage to inform shoppers oftheir responsibility when using the publicparking area.“Somemotorists leave their vehicle run-

A Parow woman has been arrested after asearch of her residence delivered an un-usual dish in her oven: 997 mandrax tabletsto the street value of R22 560.

R1 000 cash sealed in “bankies” was alsofound.

Members of the flying squad paid the re-sidence in Fairfield South, Parow, a late af-ternoon visit on Saturday 2 March, armedwith a search warrant.

“At the identified address they observedthat the security gate was closed but thefront door stood open.

“They called and an unknown female an-swered and came to the front door,” saysLt Kevin Williams, spokesperson for theParow police.

He says the two flying squad memberstold the woman why they were there, afterwhich she disappeared into the houseagain. When she did not return, they forcedthe security gate open and let themselvesin.

They delivered the search warrant andsearched the house.

The brown mandrax tablets were foundwrapped in a plastic bag in the oven, whichwas screwed shut.

The woman was arrested and taken to theParow police station.

She appeared in the Bellville magistra-tes’ court on Tuesday, on charges of posses-sion of and dealing with drugs.
